AdHoc is sort of a WiFi version of Client-to-Client networking that is roughly equivalent of using a "crossover" cable to connect two computers with wired Ethernet without using a hub. You would use that mode to connect your Clie to the WiFi card in another computer.

Infastructure, the other mode, is a Client-to-Server sort of mode that is equivalent of connecting computers to a common hub on a wired network. It is used when all computers are connecting to an Access Point (the "server" or hub device).

The AdHoc mode is less commonly used, but is still very valuable for some users.

Wizard,

WiFi is merely networking. Two units connected via the AdHoc mode are connected but just sitting there doing absolutely nothing useful.

Now, once connected, a two-way communication application, such as a text chat or graphic white board applet, could be written to make use of the WiFi connection. We have two player games that use PDA-to-PDA data links, typically IrDA though some work with the newer BT and WiFi, and there are some phone-type messaging apps that might be adaptable to your use.

O_O adaptable?... i know nothing about programming (cept simple scripts and generally useless things)

any suggestions or links?

i found colligo which is supposed to work for wifi but the demo only supported BT :(

spanworks i cant even find a demo

uh oh adhoc..............i almost got that together right before i ran out and bought a wifi router, adhoc networking is possible, just very difficult............if you're gonna do that you might want a document that i took from here as a post in a thread a while back, its alla bout how to do adhoc, and its perfectly logical, i can't remember who told me it though
