Hi:

I'm looking for recommendations for a automated Palm security program. I have been using Commander Lite to secure my palm from casual browsing of my Palms contents. I remember reading about securing your Palm from Soft reset & Hotsync to get at the contents of all unsecured db files. Are there any Apps that lock your palm and disable the HotSync/Soft Reset functions??

Thanks!

I am trialing TealLock at the moment, which seems to perform well. It can encrypt data reasonably fast, allows alarms to work properly "through" the lock, and allows you to lock out the serial port. There are also a lot of other bells and whistles that I don't personally need. So far, it does the job very well, and is very stable on my NX70, something which some of the contenders didn't succeed in....

I have been using OnlyMe for several years now. It seems to have everything I need. First, it has two ways of enterying your password. It has a Fast Start which allows you to quickly unlock your Clie by pressing the first button of your password. You can set a lock delay as well as have it instantly lock the Clie when you press the power button. It also has an option to require the button be pressed to turn on your Clie so that accidental button presses don't turn on your system. This is important because it has what it calls a cracker lock. You have three "chances" to input the correct password. If you don't, Only Me "times out" for a few minutes so that you do not have access to your Clie (You can turn it on but that's about it). The time-out increases with each incorrect try. Lastly, it handles alarms well.

The author is responsive. In fact, once I called him and we spoke for 10-20 minutes. Just one note, on my T665 after entering my password, OnlyMe does not go to the last used application. This is more of a cosmetic issue and as soon as you press an app button, it goes directly to the application. Since it really hasn't bothered me I haven't reported this to the developer.

Lastly, the web address is: http://www.tranzoa.com/html/products.htm#onlyme

Not sure if I understand the question. Palm OS 4.1 would NOT let me pass the System Lockout screen if I soft reset it. HotSyncing with a different PC would always ask for the username. Please explain how would an unauthorized person, w/o knowing your username and password, bypass the HotSync/soft reset?

That is a disturbing feeling.  I would certainly like to know how to protect my RAM database in the event of lossing my CLIE. I can see how that could happen with Palm OS 3.5.  I left my Palm Vx in the airplane once.  That was a bad and long day to change all those account numbers, passwords, etc.  Palm OS 4.1 seems to take care of this problem.  That is one of the reason I upgrade to N760C.

Oops, forgot to mention a few other things.

It does lock out your machine from hotsync'ing. Also, if you go to the web site the author does have some interesting information about password protection. Finally, it's reasonable priced at $9.95.

I've tried several different locking options, including Commander Lite. Just as [Siouxsie and the]Banshee said, the closest competitor is TealLock which can be a bit daunting although there are many that will sing TealLock's praises. For me, OnlyMe did everything I wanted (mainly lock records automatically), adhered to the KISS principle, for $3.00 less than TealLock. But I want to make it clear, I am not knocking TealLock. All things being equal, why not chose the least expensive program?

I can recommend GridLock from PDABusiness.com. Checkout http://www.pdabusiness.com/gridlock/

There is a free version available but also a commercial version that shows the owner information even if the PDA is locked. I use it with my NR70V and itīs really worth the money (only $ 9,-).

I'd recommend TealLock as mentioned earlier. It is able to protect against hard resets if placed in ROM.
