View Full Version : NX70-V camera seems... bad?

I recently purchased a NX70-V/U. My intent was to use this for work. As a field engineer, I often need to visit projects and take a lot of pictures, note various things and talk to a lot of different people. The Clie seemed an elegant all-in-one solution for me, despite the high cost.
But, the camera.... Well, not to mince words, but the camera blows huge bloody chunks of rotten meat out of a rusty tailpipe. Did I simply get a defective one, or is the camera on these things typically this bad?
I downloaded and printed a test image which can be viewed here (http://www.mindspring.com/~stoopid/_images/test_pattern.jpg). I printed this out as a full sheet 11"x17" greyscale image, set it on an angled drafting board (about 15 degrees) under typical office fluorescent lighting and took a picture with my Clie, which you can see here (http://www.mindspring.com/~stoopid/_images/DSC00002.JPG). The camera was around two feet from the paper for this image.
Notice that the left side of the image is EXTREMELY blurry. The horizontal bars become nearly a solid block of grey and the vertical bars are not far behind them. Text in any portion of the shot is completely unreadable. Readable text is pretty important to me; many of the shots I take on the jobsite may have textual information in them.
I've scanned several postings here in this forum and I can't find any reference to the Clie's camera being so bad. My guess is that either I had unrealistically high expectations for this thing, or that I simply have a "bad" one. Anyone care to give me a clue?
If this is just simply a poor quality camera I'd like to take advantage of my manufacturer's warranty while it still is relatively easy to do so. If it is just The Way Things Are, then I'd like to know that too, so I can start looking for a decent usable digital camera.
Thanks for reading and replying!!
I think that camera is 0.3 megapixels. So nothing seems wrong with it to me.:)

i'd say go for an nx-80 or an nz-90 those would be ideal, that test image is at least 1 mp, you got a .3, 1/3 of that, its a gimmic to buy it basically, but the nz90 is the one you want for serious image taking and displaying, i've played with my friends dads nz-90 and it has excellent pictures

I agree, the pictures are utter crap on the NX70, compared to my mom's NX80 - the NX80s pictures are a major step up... but not near perfect either.
I think the camera is a gimmick.. its more like a "hey remember that time you were drunk on the ski lift line." type of item.
I just took some pics of the recent snow storm.. and all the pics basically came out BLUE.

The NX70V is not bad but just may not be what you expected.
Get an NX80 or Even better an NZ90 if you need pics that good.
BTW Only and engineer would shoot a pic of a resolution chart....lol
I am one too so no offence intended, just funny. ;)

You'd think that, if an engineer, you'd read the resolution before purchasing:D

.3 camera is about the same on most camera phones. i'd generally consider that a "fun" camera, for spur of the moments shots. not "vacation" quality. not too many people only take a camera phone on their vacation. so it is not that the nx70 camera is bad, but you get what you pay for, and it is not intended to be a great digital camera.

You should have came to this site and checked before you bought. Before I bought I kept reading that the cam on the NX-70 is a novelty(that's my word Orincarnia). So when I bought the NX-70 I expected that it would be just for fun pics maybe to add a face to my phone list, nothing too much more.

For a .3 mega pixel camera it does fine. But .3 MP isn't going to give you a very good picture to begin with.

Dude, do you seriously have 100 songs that take up 16 gigs? That's ridiculous! I have hundreds that take up under 1 gig? Oh well, if you really LOVE those 100 songs I wont stop you.

get a real digital camera to take some pictures. I am not gonna use my nx70v to take picture, since I just got a canon sd100. I carry both with me.

yeah and does it record sound?, sure probably video, i don't know about sound, and thsoe spur of the moment things, i can't carry a digital around with me 24/7 cause all my pockets are all ready full from my phone headphones memstick pack and wallet (ever since i got jacked it took the place of where the camera would be) and when i'm not wearing cargo pants myy day goes crazy, unless i'm in a suit with the two pockets inside the coat, then i'm good. but i like the camera on it, i have about 7,000 pictures with decent memory resolution, not printable but still good
