Headphone+Backlight=Problem

Hi guys,
I have owned my sony for a week now, and it has been great other than the fact that I hear all this sad news about the backlight and stuff. So please check out the poll.

mine starts with 3016, and i have had it for 8 days, still going strong

My serial starts with 3022. Used MP3 and headphones regularly. After two weeks, plugged in sony earbuds and poof, no backlight.

I don't have mine on me for a serial, but my backlight died after I inserted a memory stick.

I am still not convinced that the headphones or sticks have anything to do with the light problem. As Tokio's schematics show the problem clearly lies with the position of the tape wiring that powers the screen or something related to the screen.

Anyway, my serial is 300XXXX

interesting : everybody in the U.S. seems to have a serial number starting by 300... I just went to 2 different Future Shop in Montreal (Canada) this weekend and both serials start with 400xxxxx... maybe this series will not have the backlight problem...

as far as I'm concerned, now that I know the cause of the backlight problem (look at Tokio's very interesting post and links), I'd buy a TJ35 just anytime (actually, when I get the money) because I know the problem can be fixed "easily" (I mean the unit is not a total wreck, just a cable to replace, of course that requires expertise... and a 100x microscope), here they sell it for 350 CAN - 50 CAN mail rebate from Sony... which means 300 $CAN for a TJ35... fair price for a cool product.

There was a lot of people playing with it, I'll go back the next weekend to see if it still works (I've memorized the serial)... I'll let you know

My serial is 3011xxx. No backlight issues here, and I've been using a MS and headphones regularly. I've had my TJ35 since Nov. 18.

went back to Future Shop this weekend... here is the status :

TJ35 : A1 quality, everything working fine (including the light)

TE : case is scratched and definitely plastic with a metallic layer... I saw the white plastic on one of its corner!!! down button dead

I also did a quick check with the serial on Sony special page concerning the light problem : series 400XXXX are all fine

may get it for Christmas, depends on Santa...

BTW, Santa Claus DOES exist...
