View Full Version : Pouches/holsters for the NX70

Hello, I've been lurking for a while and love the site. Very informative and it seems like folks are quite helpful responding to question threads. I finally got a new Clie NX70 (love it so far) and am looking for a good holster/pouch. Here are my requirements (meet as many as you can....)
1. It needs a belt clip
I 'm a surgical resident wearing scrubs (no belt) in the OR. Also - the lighter the better as I don't need to lose my shorts from a heavy holster adding to all the rest of the crud I have clipped on there.
2. It needs to be holster type
I'm used to tablet mode but use clamshell to protect the screen. All the leather cases keep you in the clamshell mode. If I use the aluminum cases I get good protection, the ability to flip the screen, but it starts to become heavy and bulky (I know, that's what you get for safety.) My back pocket can take the wallet and papers and the scrub top is too easy for the clie to fall out of. Ouch!
3. Balistic nylon and neoprene are the materials of choice (blood and shmutz-proof) and the-cheaper-the-better (as always). I know that soft cases won't give as much protection as the aluminum ones but hopefully that's where the clamshel earns it's pay.
4. Maybe an extra pocket for Memory sticks, headphones...
Thanks, in advance, and keep up the site - lot's to learn. - Alex

Welcome to the fold Sparky.
As might already know, Sony makes the CA80 Pouch (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=zRnqpsj69cDqvfawAPXgrYf1cWBKRghsctg=?ProductID=kXAKC0%2eNBp8AAADzToY3DUyP), but it doesn't have a belt clip or belt loop. However, what you can do (well, I'm going to try to do it) is buy a belt clip (http://www.theclip.com/) and cut a small hole in the pouch and apply it there. Then you will have a cool looking pouch with a belt clip and a pocket for a memory stick or remote control.
Another pouch, made specifically for the NR/NX series, is the RipOff CO-132-C (http://www.ripoffs.com/datasheets/co132/co132.html). It has a headphone slot, a pouch for accessories, and a belt clip.
Other companies, like Belkin (www.belkin.com), make generic PDA pouches that you may like. Try googling for some generic PDA pouches with belt clips.
I hope this helps, and if you find any other pouches, please post them here as I'm interested in them as well.

I was looking at a pouch at CompUSA before I bought a Bellagio, I really like the Bellagio, but the genaric pouch I saw was neopene with blue and black colors, it fit the NX70V like a glove and had a loop at the top to secure it in. Only $19.95 and I think the manufacurer was Iconcepts, but I'm not sure. I can't remember the attachment type but I think it was a belt loop.
The Rip-off mentioned by Phillipv is looking pretty good also for when I take my CLIE out "camping." I've used other Ripoff belt holsters with the metal clip and they work fantastic, ESPECIALLY for what you need, they grip and will not fall off.

For light weight, it's hard to beat the Ripoff pouch. Although it's a little more bulky, Grinder Gear's Basecamp (http://www.grindergear.com/basecamp.html) has a microfleece interior to protect the NX screen when stored in tablet mode.

Sparky, look through the past threads. There was one within the last couple weeks about cases for the NX and someone posted a whole list of vendors. Sorry, I don't remember the exact date it was posted.

re: MrGadget256's CompUSA slip case
I looked and found a caselogic PLT-10 that matched your description. Do you remember if it was a zipper or velcro slip case? Did you also look at the Sony slip case they sell there. If so, would you think that the case logic is slimmer or lower profile than the Sony clie slip case that sells for 10 bucks more?
Thanx!

on the Grinder website, it mentions the 'Expedition' model is the only one that fits the NX70 (on the compatibility chart) ...
I already own a number of cases, but I need one good 'for outdoors' case, so which is better, the basecamp or expedition model ?

The Nutshell® is a case that per it's website is "Perfect for Surgical Scrubs, trainers and sports wear." It doesn't meet all of your criteria, but you may want to consider it just the same. It can be found at http://www.tuff-as-nuts.com/026%3B027.html

khyasad - The NX fits in the Basecamp. It even fits in the Basecamp while it's in the Innopocket case.

I really like my RipOff. I ride public transportation to work sometimes, and I've never had it get whacked hard enough that I worried about damaging it, the RipOff is nicely padded without being heavy.
The belt clip isn't perfect, but is much better than average. It takes either a lot of force or a good bit of manual dexterity to get the case on and off a belt. The only beltclip I liked more was, oddly enough, on my last Palm III Belt Case. Unfortunately, Palm stopped making that case, because the belt clip was spring loaded (spring in the hinge type, not clip-is-a-spring), so that it was easy to put on or take off a belt, but the clip had a hook on the end, so if enough force was applied to the case to force the spring open, the belt would catch inside the curl of the hook, and the case wasn't going anywhere.
The only other downside to the RipOff case is that it is padded so thickly that you might miss an alarm if you're not in a fairly quiet environment. In a noisy one, you can forget about it.

Eric, is the RipOff black or grey? I can't really tell from the pictures on the website. Also, about the belt clip, would you say it would stay on some shorts while jogging? That's what I'd intend to do with it.

Black, and unless you jog in silk running shorts, I'm pretty sure it would hang on. Give it any kind of a waist band, and it will hang on with a death grip. My pager won't hold on to a single sheet of paper strong enough to support itself, the RipOff with an NX-60 in it will, and it will even take a surprising amount of wiggling to make it let go. I'll post a picture of the clip when I get home. You really can't judge the clip by the pictures on the website.
Oh, and the velcro is a better quality than I've seen on most belt cases.

I am a surgical intern who bought the NutShell (Tough as Nuts) for my NR, and when I upgraded it fit the NX nicely. I love it, no complaints. Solid leather on the outside, soft velvety stuff on the inside, a strong velcro strap. I've even ordered several for my Attendings!
Enjoy.
PS Only minor weakness - when scrubbing near a strong faucet I worry about water getting in my unit. Usually I just slide it to the back, take it off, or turn down the pressure.

Looked at the CA-80 by Sony (nice and simole, no belt clip, might try Phillipv's suggestion about creating my own), the Ripoff 132 (a little more bulky, has the belt clip, but not as sleek) and TuffasNuts (don't like the open case - but thanks). I think that the Grinder gear Basecamp and expidition models might be the best but I wanted to know if they only sell over the Internet. Anyone know if someone sells them in NYC shops? I would love to see one in person before I buy. Thanks.

Re: BLUGURU
I was wrong, you found the correct model/name, a caselogic PLT-10. I also think it is slimmer and the case logic is a better deal tha the Sony. Of course the Rip-Off is only about 13.00 before shipping.
