View Full Version : Just tried Mapopolis...how do you PalmOS 5.x guys (not UX series) stand the sound?

My current "project" is to get some kind of decent GPS system working with my Clie and I've been going over several alternatives.
Mapopolis is a name I hear often here and I thought I'd try it out on my NX73V. It looks fine, but the sound is horrible! I consider voice prompts to be utterly important in a navigation system and the splotchy, broken prompts in Mapopolis is a real disappointment to me. Are people here (meaning those with PalmOS 5.x clies) simply living with this shortcoming or have they found some workaround?

The voice on Mapoplois for Palm OS 5 is one of the main reasons I am getting a NX73 from Nr70.
There is another program though that does have voice (even on OS4.1) called Digimap their website is http://english.digi-map.de/ The only probelm with this is that it does not support full screen, however it does have a speed based zoom which seems to work quite well.

you don't need to use 'navigator'. platinum gps without sound works just fine. until they fix the sound problem on clies and navigator......

Actually, just so you know, I have a NX73V and the voice prompts with Navigator are distorted and cutoff. Any PalmOS 5 clie you get that is before the UX40/50 will exhibit this problem.

Maybe the sound patch that cliepet created MCA2 i think it's called will make the voice sounds better on earlier clie's, after all it now allows things like aero player and games like snails work with sound that previously only worked on Palm devices or OS5.2 clie's .
I'd be interested to here the results of this if anyone can try it, voice commands would be a deciding reason to get or not get GPS on my clie.

I use a serial cable with my Garmin 38 from http://pc-mobile.net/grdc.htm . Works pretty well. Turns a fairly old GPS unit into a new one with color driving directions and prompts :D

I'm using Mapopolis 5.27 on my NX70V with Platinum Plus GPS maps (series NB) on my 256MB CF card. I've found that Navigator is a poor choice on the NX/NZ series due to (1) limited RAM; and (2) poor voice support (due to Sony's sound API).
Navigator uses series ND maps which are substantially larger but are more up-to-date and accurate than my NB series maps.
For me, this is a compromise that I'm willing to live with and I'm very satisfied with Mapopolis. I use a Rikaline serial GPS mouse for in-car navigation which I purchased before Pelaca's CF GPS workaround was available. I commend Pelaca for his work on getting certain CF GPS units to work on a limited basis, however it is not a viable option for me because of the limited capabilities, mapping software compatibility, and intermittent reliability (from what I've read here).
I have to admit this is the only area where a T3 with a BT GPS unit would tempt me to ditch my NX70V.
Check out the Mapopolis Official Forum (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/default.asp?CAT_ID=5) over at www.gpspassion.com for some great information.

I put my most-used Mapopolis maps in flash with JackFlash. Least used on MemoryStick.
My biggest complaint is trying to locate which county maps to load on long trips through several counties. I've actually copied several county maps (jpg) from websites to use as reference for loading Mapopolis maps. I wish Mapopolis would just know which county the GPS is indicating it's in and go look in RAM & Memorystick for the correct map instead of leaving it for me to figure out.

Pelaca's CF GPS driver is not supported by Mapopolis .They were working on it but I think they might have given up. email them and request that they support it. All they need to do (per Pelaca) is support Palm's 'New serial manager' and the Port ID is 'GPSd'. (several other apps do work, Mapadvisor is the newest)
