The UX50 came out at $700 and is still about $600. If Sony Clie-naming-convention holds, the 80 would be a significant step up, including in price, from the 50.

So what features would you expect to see and why are you wanting to pay $1000 for a palmtop?

Today, you could probably get the UX50 at $490. I got mine 2 weeks ago for $500. If you live in the US, try this site for a good price:

The price is one of the better ones, and they have free 2-3 day shipping, which I thought was pretty cool.
Enjoy!

Although somewhat true on what you said, you can't rule out that sony many integrate a better Camera or maybe with added flash and increased memory. In this kind of situation, people will still be willing to fork out more for the device.

BTW I still see people using the word 'Palmtop' and I'm just wondering. Palmtop or Palmpilot is used as a name when 3com came out with PDAs. Shouldn't we call these things 'Palm' instead.

Easy...Easy.
The guy was just trying to make sure that he wouldn't make a mistake by perchasing right before everyone knew a new model was coming out.

So far, AFAIK, on the boards, none of the rumors have been verified. The rumors we've seen have either been denied by Sony or "let out" by the photoshoppers themselves.

Hope this helps,
GS

Just to let you know that the UX80 you've heard about is a fake.

That doesn't mean Sony WON'T come out with something called the UX80, but they haven't announced anything  My bet is that the next UX style will be an OS 6 device, so it won't be until early next year, since OS 6 is released to the various manufacturers at the end of this month.

I'd say that if you're planning to get one in a few weeks, just wait until then.  If there's no new announcements by then, buy the UX.  It's a dreadful thing trying to judge the "sweet spot" for buying a new Clie, and if you wait too long, you could end up waiting forever.  :)  Clies tend to have a pretty decent resale value as well, so you can always upgrade later if the new goodies are too tempting.  :D

yeah.. and it makes NO sense at all to wait. There is always better one coming out... esp for Sony. Are you gonna wait forever? :D

When devicding to get a new clie i was debating between the ux50 and the nx80. I was just wanted to see if the waiting time outways the possibility of like a new camera, better battery life (hopes), or better outside deisgn. <-- ive seen some user members pics of what these next ones could look like.

I tend to agree with Bionic Antboy. I don't expect to see a new UX model until the OS6 timeframe though I don't think OS6 machines will be on the market as soon has he predicts. My guess is more like late 2nd quarter or early 3rd quarter 2004 (aka "Summer").

While everyone want "more, more, more, ..", the UX lacks very little. Almost all of the "mores" that people on this list and others have posted would have as big a downside and their upside. More memory = More cost. More camera = more memory usage if higher rez and less battery life if a flash is added. More battery life = heavier and bigger. ...

Given the past of current technology advances, recent market pressures, and Sony's recent history, I'm betting on Summer 2004 for any significantly improved model. Its possible that the need for a small tweak could push Sony into releasing a slightly new UX sooner but any such action on Sony's part would cause any possible OS6 device to be delayed due to the diverting of R&D resources.
