View Full Version : CLIE a Time Saver?

I Believe that, like most people, I originally decided to get a PDA to help me get/stay organized and to save me time. (Please let me know if I'm off base on this issue!?) Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my CLIE and it is certainly useful to have all the info in place, but I often times find myself wasting time with my CLIE instead of saving time. Does anyone else find themselves in this position as well?

Yes I agree, the little insignificant apps, like the Address Book, To-Do, and Memo are useful and take very little of my time.
But the really, REALLY, important stuff, like the games, take up lots of my time!!!
In all seriousness, I do use my NX for some unique solutions to tasks and problems I come across everyday.

Can you elaborate further? I'm interested in tapping into some uses for my CLIE that I may not have contemplated.

I'll SPEND time changing MP3's, changing backgrounds, taking pix & then copying over to my DP, changing FONT colors, trying out launchers, BROWSING cliesource and finding out WHAT else I can with my nx70 and THEN trying it out in my NX70 and...
Organizer? Yes
Time Saver? Far from it.

OK the other day I had to asses about 40 problem areas that needed attention. My superiors asked for a report on each of the problem areas. The environment was rather cold and damp. I noted each area by number and dictated into the NX. Far better than trying to write all the details on say, a clipboard. When I got back to my WARM and comfortable office, I was able to type my report in comfort by starting and stopping the voice recorder. An added interesting note, on playback the NX auto rewinds a very slight bit from where you stop and replays a few syllables of the previous word, handy in keeping your train of thought
As an added benefit, I was able to take photos of the worst cases and attached prints of the photos to my report. Of course I would have liked slightly better resolution, however for the task at hand the resolution was fine.
One day I needed to look into area I could not fit in or even get my head into. I had to look at a part configuration. Whipped out the NX , took a picture and could then figure what parts and tools that would be needed.
I have also used the camera to take pictures of a part, drag my Clie to the supply house and show the salesman the picture of the part
I also use the memo to jot down phone numbers or sketches of things. It basically avoids all those scraps of paper.

I have to echo the comments made by jmg_NX21. I to find myself wandering the CLIE websites, looking for, downloading, and then trying new programs; playing around with the appearance of my CLIE, etc. It has helped me with organization, but I seem to waste more time now playing with my CLIE. This is not a complaint, but merely an observation.

My Clie, (and my older Palm devices, to a lesser extent) has become an indespensible "tool" that I use. Does it "save" time? Absolutely! Does it "cost" time? Definatly.
It saves time by letting me have information at my fingertips that I wouldn't otherwise have. Dictionaries, maps, eBooks, Web sites, addresses, pictures, reference documents, games, MP3 files, the list goes on. I am constantly amazed by what I can fit on a 128MB Memory Stick!
To accomplish this, I recommend the three most important apps that have transformed the Clie into the information machine that it is: MyBible, DateBK5 and HandStory.
MyBible:
This Bible reader program is top-notch. I keep two Bible versions on my Memory Stick, for reference. Searching and access is lightning fast, and the interface is slick. There are other options out there, but I invested in it for my Palm Vx, and now that I don't use that anymore, it works just great on my Clie. My only complaint is that it's not HiRes+ complient, but that's OK for me.
DateBK5:
I could just as easily use the native DateBook program, but DateBk5 does add some nice features that I like. I am able to keep my Clie synched with Outlook at work, and it has been invaluable for things such as storing meeting notes, playing alarms to remind me when something needs to be done or if I need to be somewhere. DateBK5's integration with the ToDo and Address apps pulls it all together. Our company uses Outlook extensivly, so keeping the Clie in sync with Outlook is a Godsend, and DateBK5 just plain works.
HandStory:
I could really go on for pages and pages about how this app has increased the usefullness of the Clie. This app lets me put info into my Clie very easily, and information that I otherwise wouldn't think of. From web pages to DOC files to images, it converts the data into a format that is surprisingly effective and readable on the Clie. I have "Direct Clips" set up for things like news, weather, and movie showtimes that get updated automatically every day. I also create ad-hoc clips while browsing the Internet for those times when I want to have something with me to read or to show my wife. I have several DOC-formatted stories that I downloaded from MemoWare (http://www.memoware.com) again, for those times when I want something to read. (Check out their "free" section. There's a LOT of interesting stuff there.) HandStory does have its shortcomings, but it has let me eliminate a number of apps that were eating up space. I have always loved to read, especially magazines and newsletters. now that so much is available electronically over the Web, and with a program like HandStory, keeping this information with me is easy.
Of course, games and the like are definatly time-suckers, and the simple fact that I spend so much time on this forum indicates that yes, the Clie does take up a lot of time. But then again, it's a hobby for me and it keeps me outa trouble!

meetings, organizing and implementing stuff is my life. My clie is a tremendous time saver in avoiding having folks pi**ed-off cause I forgot to follow-up on something.
yea I spend lots of time with it. datebk5 is the first thing I look at in the morning (unless BigClock was used as an alarm clock) and the last thing I check before going to bed.
and games... sure but the only loser on that count is mszone. Its not a question of more games.. just different ones.
