Probably silly questions but I'll ask them anyway

I want to go travelling with my Clie but won't have any other computer with me.

1) Is there anyway I can back up my clie using computers belong to third parties/ internet cafe etc via a website?

2) is it possible to download info from Avantgo without intellisync and or palm desk top

3) If I want to transfer all the info on my clie to another PDA is it just a case of backing up one and then connecting the other and syncing it or does palm desk top run into problems if its not the same PDA that is attached.

I am new to all this! ... as you can probably tell.

Backup to a memory stick using BackupBuddyVFS!

Re: Avantgo without a full sync to a desktop, as long as you have an internet connection, you can update AvantGo without doing through a desktop. For example, I use a SupplyNet cable to connect my NR70V to the net using my Motorola Timeport. Once my net connection is established, in AvantGo select Channel/Modem Sync and you're off and running.

In fact, you can do a manual backup to memory stick using Sony Clie software that should already be on your Clie called "MS Backup".

If you do a backup to your memory stick I suggest you use BackupBuddyVFS. With it you can password protect your backup on the memory stick. Otherwise if you loose the memory stick some one has access to all of your data. I further suggest you password protect your PDA when ever it is turned off. This way all of your private data is protected.

Thanks for the help so far, but no one has responded to point 3.

Any one care to comment?

If they have the same hotsync names then Palm Desktop will just reinstall as if you did a hard reset.  If you are gone and computerless and want to transfer the stuff you can open hotsync on one unit and then change the Cradle/Cable option to IR to a PC/Handheld and this will hotsync the two units together but being as it is IR it might take a while depending on the size.

If you have registered apps it is possible that the registration will not follow, just an FYI.

For point 3, the second PDA would probably have to be blank and you would set the hotsync operation to Desktop overwrites handheld for all the applications.

Sralmas

only problem with your avant go solution is that I don't have a mobile phone. Can a connection be made through a desk top in the absence of intellisync?

Option 3, and this will work for in general for backup.

1) Get a file manager such as FileZ (freeware and a great app). 2) Use FileZ to create a directory on the MS named Backup (as an example).
3) Use FileZ to copy the entire contents of RAM to the MS.
4) Insert the MS into the 2nd Clie and use FileZ to copy the contents of the Backup folder on the MS to the Clie's RAM.

Points brought up by others regarding the Hotsync ID and registered programs will apply.

With respect to backing up with your Clie withou the use of a PC just follow steps 1-3.

The Sony included app MSBackup won't allow you to use the data stored using one pda to download onto the other pda. But BackupBuddy (even the free version) will. What I do when I travel is keep a spare MS in some place other than in the pda, download a backup copy to it every so often. That way, if I lose my pda, I can use the spare MS to download all the info to the replacement.

IMPORTANT!
If you are going to back up and possibly use another PDA to restore to, make sure its the same type/OS. You cannot backup and restore between OS4 and OS5 devices.

Also, regarding AvantGo, you can use any phone line (hotel, or otherwise) if you have both a modem for your clie and a dialup account.

In the absence of a modem for your Clie, you could do it with a pc, but there are MANY variables to worry about (hotsync cable, usb port, WinOS version, dialup or broadband connection at the pc) that I wouldn't even worry about it.  I'd go buy a cheap cell phone/account and do it that way.
