I think you are seeing a small sampling as well. I have had my TJ35 for right at a month and had no problems with the backlight at all. It could be that even that they all come from the same batch and Sony got a bad batch of backlights that didn't get discovered during the quality control process. This is a common occurence for a lot of manufactures, not PDA manufactures but in general, evidenced by the number of recalls you see happening. I have been really happy with my TJ thus far, but have to admit that after seeing the backlight problems I am glad I bought the replacement warranty from Circuit City!

It is pretty damn nice. If it breaks, they replace it, if the model isn't available anymore (very likely with the speed at wich PDAs end of life), they preplace it with whatever replaced it in the product line. It's two years and pretty much no questions asked, so if my 18 month old sinks his teeth into the LCD, I can get a new one without any hassle! That why I bought it to begin with, the third day I had it my 18 month old was wandering around the living room with my TJ35 hanging from his mouth by the flip cover! Circuit City gives you two weeks to come back and get the warranty so I went back and got it!
