View Full Version : NetFront v3.0 problems

Surfing the Internet on a NX80 has been a bit of a depressing experience, partly due to slow page download, but mostly attributed to some quirky browser behavior!
Some Internet sites bring up an OS message during download, mentioning corrupt code and forcing a soft reset.
Password log-ins with Yahoo mail and E*trade were feasible initially, but now it seems that cookies are rejected no matter what options are selected on the browser.
A hard reset seems to normalize browser behavior but only for a short while.
No upgrade to the software is available as far as I can tell, version 3.1 being advertised for the Pocket PC only.
Direct support is non-existent and I doubt that Sony would get involved in resolving these browser problems.
I am interested to hear what other users experience has been with this browser and if anybody knows of an alternative to NetFront to access the internet.

I use NetFront with my NX80 and WL110. Yes, it is slow, but the best browser I have tried. Don't do any serious work with it, though.
Have you tried clearning the cache and history files after every NetFront session? I usually do that to release some extra RAM and do not have any real problems or issues with NetFront.
Just a thought.

Hi,
My experience says that you need to peridocally delete all NetFront-related dbs in RAM (with the exception of your bookmarks) to ensure error-free browsing. Problems seem to "pile up" after many connect/disconnects to the network.
The easiest way to do this is to use FileZ and filter based on "Creator" of "nf3t". Then select all except NF3BOOKMARKD and delete all.
I also find that reducing the size of the cache helps with the performance. (I use 300Kb.) I surmise that looking thru a very large cache (1500Kb) slows down page-rendering (because of the slow bus) so that it is faster to pull it off the network again.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the help!
I was deleting the cache, but never thought of erasing the history log!
I must say, the browser became a lot more stable after clearing that history listing.
Later, I followed George's advice and deleted all the files mentioned, including the cookies database, to great effect as I managed to log-on to secure sites afterwards.
Still battling with Yahoo Mail, but that could be finger trouble...
I am amazed that such an elegant program depends on such a cumbersome procedure to function properly! I will never complain about Windows XP again!!
Thanks again to Larry and George for easing the pain!

You said the internet was running slow, theres and easy solution for that, go into the setting and were it asks for ip and mac and then theres an option for power save, turn that OFF!, it will boost the speed by atlease 10x. well good luck

Wheres this powersave thing? Or is it just a UX feature?
If its UX, why is it in the NX? Sorry no offense but its just a little annoying.

Procedure for NX80 and NX73 (I guess)
1 Go to Clie preferences
2 Select 'Network' in the configuration list
3 Tap 'Details'
4 Tap Edit'
5 Select Infrastructure and tap 'Advanced Setup'
6 Deselect 'PowerSaveMode'
and then fasten your seat belt!

Can someone post an 'idiots guide', in stages, for deleting the cache and history files in NetFront please?

You need to find the NetFront files. Open ClieFiles, bring up the NF3T creator file group, erase all files in that group except your bookmarks!
That's all there is to it!

Is this an option on my NX70V? I can't seem to find any 'Powersave' options at all :-( Sounds like it's just what I need to give NetFront a boost to the 'usable' level of performance.

Go to preferences, then network -> advance
I have no problems with opening pages. They open quickly!
Download rate at 40kbit/sec. I dont know why. I just have a WL110 very strange when I hear u all have problems with opening pages.

"Go to preferences, then network -> advance"
I don't see an Advanced or Infrastructure or even Edit option anywhere on my Network/Details settings - just Connection Type, Idle Timeout, Query DNS and IP Address, plus the OK/Cancel?Scripts buttons... am I just visually-impaired or something? (NX 73V by the way...)

"I know it sounds crazy but it might be true..."
fjl307 and Lupin Addams:
Can you confirm that you are NOT using a WL110 card. I think the info in this thread and the advice about speeding up NetFront applies to WLAN users only. The option for POWERSaveMode may be something to do with antenna power. So if, like me, you are here looking for BT and IR wireless info, this doesn't apply to us.
jmg_NX21: thanks for trying to help. We're not stupid, we're just in WLAN - free zones...

Occasionally, my NX80V will repeatedly crash when I'm attempting to surf. I eventually figured out this was caused by the cookie file becoming corrupted. However, totally deleting the cookie file is a bit much, as it requires me to sign back onto several sites, rather than being automatically logged on. Therefore, I keep a backup of the cookie file on a memory stick that I made after I had already logged onto these sites. Whenever the NX80V starts to crash when I get to sites that want to give me cookies (like this one) I just copy the backup over the current cookie file and my problems are solved.

The problem for us is if you don't have a wirless card you can't set up a WLAN service option. No WLAN option->no 'Advanced Setup' -> no POWERSaveMode option.
