I am using a NX70V/E with a 128MB Lexar MS and 1GB IBM Microdrive - Fantastic!!!!!

Haven't tried a CF solid state card but the different makes are probably made at the same factory.

Last I heard, there some performance issues with 1Gb card.

Personally, I have a Viking 512Mb and a Kingston 256Mb. Both are fine. The Viking is an 8x while the Kingston is 10x. The Kingston seems to be slightly faster.

There is no comprehensive database of cards and performance but you can certainly help towards that by adding some data points. I can suggest that you get a Sandisk/Lexar 12x and post your findings. As a 12x, it should certainly be no worse than what I've got.

I have had no problems with reading and writing an IBM 1GB drive on my nx70. I did have some bad sectors which were causing a problem until I marked them bad. Since then, no problems at all.

The mechanical drives like the IBM and Magicstor do use more power than solidstate cf cards, but can be cheaper. I had a 1GB drive leftover from a project so that's what I use. I've since seen solidstate ones as cheap as $159 after rebate. 2GB solidstate cards are way more expensive than the drives. You just need to think about your wallet and your battery life and make your choices.

Type I and II only differ in thickness, not functionality. The nx and nz series will fit either type I or type II cards, no problem.

Cards vary in speed, but even the slowest ones will work fine. It is really hard to compare. On a high end digital camera, you may find a faster card will allow you to take pictures faster. For listening to mp3's or watchings mqv's you will likely not notice a difference.

All brands should function properly, since cf is an industry standard. But there is no "official" speed spec for people to grade their cards with. I haven't used any of the faster cards in my nx70. The biggest solidstate cf card I've used is 64Mb so I can't help with knowing which cards are faster.

For my NX70V I have several 256M CF cards from various manufacturers and various speeds. I also have a 512M from SimpleTech. All work fine and I see no difference between them. I think the limitations are in the Sony CF interface, not the cards. All will play converted DVD movies with the same set of problems. All play MP3 fine.

Sorry I don't have any 1G experience.

I also have an IBM 340M Microdrive that seems to work well. In spite of the comments that one can not write to the microdrive I was able to write to it as well as read. I had problems with MP3 on the microdrive because it inserted pauses when it was spinning the disk up to read. Others have said MP3s played fine.

Hope this helps?!?

Don't get the IBM Microdrive, that's readonly on clies.
I would suggest SanDisk 1GB Compact Flash, since that seems to the best company I know of. You don't need the Ultra in my opinion unless you are really anal about waiting that 2ms for your video to load up.

Does anyone else know of any others that would work well with an NX70V?

This is gonna depend on the drivers you use. Pelacas probably would be the best choice for you if you are using microdrives. I know the Eruware ones say they work but for read only (have to read the fine print) and the CF Magic doesn't support microdrives. Since the Pelaca drivers are taken from the Sony drivers they are probably the closest you are gonna get to actual Sony released drivers. Hope that helps. :)

I'm using MagicStor 2.2GB CF with NZ90 with pelaca's driver and I have no problems. If battery power is not your primary concern I can suggest MagicStor 2.2 GB. It works perfect and has a big big big capacity. Beyond them it's very cheap compared to other products. Type I 2 GB CF's are about 500-700$ but I bought mine for 220$ including shipping and taxes.
The only problem of MagicStor is its battery consumption. If I listen to music from CF continuously the battery runs out in about 2 or 3 hours. If you try to watch a video clip it runs out in only one hour. So , it's cheap , but because of it's a microdrive it behaves the battery as if the battery is its enemy. So it's your choice. If you don't need much space , buy a 512 MB Type I card and save your battery and your nerves:). If you need more space and have money , try Pretec 6 GB CF and pay 4500$ :)
As I said before , if battery power doesn't matter that much and if you want to buy a big card for a small amount of money , buy a MagicStor. I use it and I'm so glad that I've bought it.
