View Full Version : Unregistered Morons

All... IMHO, it's glaringly obvious most everyone agrees that Unregistered's should not be allowed to post.

It's also pretty obvious that Unregistered's with the IQ and social graces of dead catfish continue to prove the point.

That said, I have an idea. This idea will be VERY hard for even myself to stick to.

No one respond, IN ANY WAY, to an unregistered guest posting (or posing) as someone pretending to be the offspring of a human. Let their words be as the wind. Let them start threads, and no one answer.

If it is a genuine question, please answer briefly (Please see the FAQ, etc.) and be as gracious as possible. Once answered, move along.

I know this will be hard. I myself enjoy some of the more moronic posts. Especially when the Unregistered toad fans the flame!

Thank you sir. It didn't take very long, so I thought someone flamed me REAL quick.

Well, at least someone agrees with me (more than I can say for my wife) :D

how do you add "Unregistered" to your ignore list? wouldn't that work?

That's a little bit harsh to the newbie.
But no doubt that sometimes ppl just don't even search or read be4 they post their questions.

some are very anxious about their situation and seek direct help in the form of a new thread, i did this once myself

Perhaps we only respond by telling them to register and then we'll try to help. I mean the main goal here is to get folks who genuinly want the help to register yes?

BTW - this should be Cliesource wide shouldn't it?

Nah, It's only us uppity UX50 users who have a problem :)

The only problem with this whole "unregistered" problem is that this whole board software has a problem with registration. I mean, half the time I post it's not recognizing my registration. Until they sort that out, there's no solving this unregistered problem.

...let's not confuse unregistered with trolls. Not all unregistered are trolls, they are just people who are new to the boards and think they just have one question and can get away with not registering (we know better -- they'll be back :)) And not all newbies are trolls either.

Unfortunately, there are many unregistered users who have said inappropriate things by hiding behind anonymity. However, there are a few genuine unregistered postings which do ask for help.

Personally, I try to answer their questions (as long as it looks and sounds legit) and ask them to register if they find this forum useful and helpful.

Well, to be honest, sometimes I forgot to login (thinking that the cookie works, though sometimes not for this forum) but I think we can just ignore the unregistered....

We don't need to spend our precious time and energy to even read what they write, ignore them, and they will dissappear.

I enjoyed my first time here as unregistered, since I was in hurry to decide to buy UX50 or not, and I am not sure whether I will be here or palmonecity forum. In that case, being able to post as unregistered is useful for both the user and moderator.

well, just my humble opinion.....

Folk.... please read my original post. I'm not talking about ignoring unregistered's.

I'm talking about ignoring unregistered's who post something like the next UX will contain an 80gig hd w/a 17" screen. I even agree w/the unregistered who posted above. No need to register. But if you post something as unregistered, it should be a question or a post that makes some sense.

Okay?

it only takes a few seconds to ignore a post.. trolls seem to INFECT the conversation, that is not so easy to skip over..

I guess I am in the minority here, but having once been an "unregistered" poster I think it would be more CS friendly to see the post and then judge whether they are being a troll or just having found CS ,are testing the waters. CS just recently made 30,000 members. All of them may have at one time posted as an unregistered. I have been bumped off, been put on as guest etc. It depends on the thread and forum. For what it is worth, I would like to feel welcome if I were to "test the waters".

11-25-2003, 10:59 AM
Yeah, it's the registered Mormons that are the problem.

I'm with Cliener.

I also agree with the 'Darwin Awards' comment. You start a site, and ban all the unregistereds. Let's see how well you do with it.

Every successful board I belong to allows unregistered posting. They became successful because they maintained an open community. I guess it's just easy for me to ignore them.

Just curious, but can you link to one discussion board with 30k members that does not allow unregistereds? I have no doubt some exist, but I'm curious to see the topic.

I think once they fix the cookie problem(which I have not had, I login in at various times from 3 computers all recognize me), then they could ban unregistered POSTING. BUT they can still view the boards and get answer to their questions. If they have a valid question they need answered they can register and then they will also get an email when there are replies.

I'll have to disagree with y'all. When I first found Cliesource, it appealed to me more than any other forum site because I was NOT required to register to post. I had some questions that had not been answered (after using the search feature) and I did not register before I asked and the great thing was this: the membership at the times were all too eager to help, not bash the newbie. Cliesource has gotten so hostile that if I had come across it back then the way it is now, I would not have stayed. As it is now, it seems that it is overcrowded with juvenile, hot headed, self absorbed, stuck up snobs. Personal attack? No, just an observation and I'm not pointing fingers.

A newbie coming in needing help should get it, even if it is a courtious gesture of pointing to the search button (but it would be more helpful to include the search string itself since most newbies don't even know what term they're looking for).

Yeah, there are some jerks out there who don't register, but there are are jerks who do. I still think it is a good idea to keep the forum open to attract the newbies and not so newbies that need help.

That's my $.02 that I've been saving for a while. Use it wisely :)

I guess it depends a lot on exactly how hard t is to register. I havn't done so for a while, so maybe I remember it being easier than it was? I guess there is the whole email thing and they may be afraid that they're going to get junk mail or something like that.

See how quickly you can become an unregistered moron.:D

I personally ignore both registered and unregistered morons, but willingly engage anyone with a valid question or point of view. If you can't ignore the morons, whether they be registered or unregistered, that is a personal problem.

Oops, I meant to log out before posting.:D

By the way, all mormons should register.

PS: I also favor registering all morons, so we know who they are and can avoid them.

I look upon forums as I look upon my own house. Would you let complete strangers come into your house? Let them say and do almost whatever they want? I don't think so. The farthest I'd ever go would be to put a webcam in the livingroom, metaphorically.

Unregistered users should be able to view and search, nothing more.

How does providing you with an alias make someone any less of a stranger?

Hmmmm. How about web cams in the bedroom?

By the way Rob, where do you live and what's for dinner?:D

What's sad is when registered members troll as unregistered. Newbies don't know that their IP can, of course, be tracked.

As I`ve said before in this recurring thread, I was an unreged poster (hopefully not moron) before signing up.
I really dont think the amount of trolls/morons ratio is much different for regged & unregged users ;)

I see forums as a public place though, nothing like my own house.

But I`ll add my vote to registar all morons. But is really a no sweat case to pass that sort of crud by, ignore it and move on to next thread.

[OFF TOPIC]

For those of you who fear for junk mails when registering forums, check this out : www.mailinator.com (http://www.mailinator.com)

Basically, you made up a email address such as UnregisteredMorons@mailinator.com. When they receive a mail, your mail account is immediately available. All the accounts will disappear after a few hours. So it's only good for this kind of purpose and nothing more.

No. At least not for me.
It tends to happen to me when I have left cliesource open in the browser, and my active session times out. I then click on a link, it takes me to that page, but as unreged. This is actually a good thing imo as I share computers a lot.

Some are just newbies, first time CLIE buyers or CLIESource users, potential members in fact... Some are just too eager to solve their problems.

also they should really search before posting questions.

ok the ms slot question, the need to be poked with a stick, but when you see a windows xp logo, it can be convincing (since microsoft does strut across half the market) oh yeah and its possible to run mac os7 on a palm.......just gotta know what you're doing

actually the only time i get annoyed is when an unregistered thinks they know more and just tries to argue a point for no good reason, then just leaves happily after disturbing the forum and getting people angry, thats why i don't want unregistereds to post, but there have been in the past 2 times where an unregistered helped me when no one else would, but then you get the ones with the "holier than thou" attitude that if they used it in real life, would get the crap kicked out of them...those and registereds calling people names (this threads an exception cause i believe its true) but i've seen people post a question and the next post says "you idiot" sounds like my 3rd grade class

i'm too lazy to use google

Homie_S
11-27-2003, 12:31 PM
?!

How can you be lazy to use a search engine? You type in what you want, search, and find some matches. It doesn't get any easier, I don't understand how it could in anyway be a daunting task...

Orincarnia
11-27-2003, 12:43 PM
which is easier, typing your normal question then filtering through all different things that don't pertain to what you are lookng for, or just posting a question and someone gives you exactly what you need, personally i like dealing with google better than people (no offence) because its faster to respond, but i put that cause i know a lot of people (including myself back in april, would just post and ask for an answer, and i'd get it, of course if the question is too simple people just disreguard and make fun of it (like the "can i put win xp on my clie" answer: "no thats a skin" q: "whats a skin" a: "an overlay of the palm os so you can have any interface you want"

googles answer: "redesigning the clie", "skin topology of humans", "buy this clie now!", "win xp now only 10 million dollars"

thats generally what i got from google because its a broader search engine, people here work better because of assumptions (computers (edit) cannot assume what you're talking about) but searching the forums here helps, unless someone has a huge signature with all the words in it, then you get 50 billion, like i was looking for a thread with bacon in it, and i got every single thread i've ever posted in..........so i had to change it and then change it back

this is an unedited group of thoughts that i just thought of right now..........i'm disorganized, make what you will of it
