View Full Version : Handstory - Install to Card.... Weird situation
After updating my direct clips and hotsyncing my Clie, I notice that the updated clips get stored under Palm\Launcher. Then after launching Handstory and it updates and moves the files to the Handstory directory the Launcher directory is emptied out. Is this normal? If so then why must I change the category of my clips each time I update and hotsync them. I don't mind the copying to launcher then to handstory directory, but I hate having to update the category each clip should be in.
Any ideas on what could be going wrong here!!!!!!

I don't think anything is going wrong; that's just the way it works. Handstory chose this workaround method to sync to the card rather than writing their own conduit. So, updated clips are essentially treated as brand new clips. I don't think there's anyway around it.

Do you have that many clips that it matters?
I gave up syncing the clips to MS, and just sync them to RAM. I don't add a category to them, and in Handstory I select "Clip" at the top and my updateable clips are listed. But I have only so many, in fact they fit on one screen, so this works for me.
I still use iSilo for a lot of sites I pull, and some in Handstory.
As for the categories, it has to be a bug. I just played with it, and the clip was set to "News" on the laptop, and "News" on my SJ30. Re-updated the clip, re-synced, and now it's set to "Humor" (which is what all the clips on the SJ30 are set to!).
There are a few quirks with this program that need to be fixed, and this is one of them. Another is if you set bookmarks in a Handstory doc, it does not sort them alphabetically (puts them in the order you create). Discovered this, unfortunately, after merrily setting about 20 bookmarks in doc...part of the reason I resurrected iSilo and do most of my doc work there.

It's normal operation. The problem is that it takes awhile if you have large clips. You have to sit there and wait, while it moves the clips and there is no way to stop it, once you access the app. Short clips are fine, but 1mb or larger seem to take forever.

Normal, as has been said. I set my categories in the Clip Manager or Editor and they stick fine in the handheld. I have a lot of clips, so I need the categories. This method of syncing to the card avoids adding yet another conduit to Hotsync, which is preferable to me and one of the reasons I like HandStory so much.

Wonder what you're doing differently...none of my categories stick...they all change to "Humor" on the handheld, regardless of what I set them to or even if they are replacing an identically named file that has the correct category...still changes to "Humor" on the SJ30.
Are you using Intellisync Lite or Pocket Mirror to sync with? Don't see why that would matter, but the only thing I can think of (I use PocketMirror).

I'm not using either one at the moment, just Palm Desktop. I made the categories on my handheld first, then set them in the Manage Clips for existing clips already registered. For new clips, you can set them in the Clip Editor before registering them. I've never had a problem with them sticking. Remember that you cannot exceed 15 categories. That's a Palm OS limit.

My categories also stick, I create the same category on both the handheld and in the desktop. One of the advantages of the way Handstory syncs to card is that Handstory itself can also be stored on the card. Apps that have their own conduit have to be in RAM to sync. There is a bit of a delay while Handstory moves the files from the palm/launcher directory to the Handstory directory, but for me it is worth it to me to be able to keep the App on MS.

Yep...I do *exactly* the same thing, yet no clip every holds its category. I've even cleared out all categories/clips, started over, reregistered all clips, etc. Still doesn't hold. (And I only have 8 categories.) Must be FastCPU's fault! (The latest trend is to blame all gremlins on overclocking...<g>)

Maybe it's a version thing. Which version are you using?

I know you were joking, but I'm using FastCPU on my T665 and categories are sticking. But I'm on version 2.2

Well, i've sorta got it figured out. My categories in the Handstory desktop and what was in my NXv did not match. I added and deleted categories to make them match, deleted all Handstory pdb's on my handheld and re-synced. It worked, mostly.
It's just that anything I put under the Handstory category on the desktop goes to unfiled but anything I put under the web category goes to Handstory. Every other category goes to the correct one on sync.
But hey at least they are all group together now.

Okay I checked my categories and they did not match. My desktop version was missing the "Business" category. I forgot my Clie at home today. What a day I'm having without it. I'll try when I get home and hopefully this was the cause of my problem.

FYI for all...
I sent an email to Handstory support about this issue, and will report here what they say (if they say anything...their support response tends to be erratic...)
Gary
Well I didn't get to try it at home, but first thing this morning I updated my clips, hotsynced and the same thing happened. I did manage to take a look at my handstory setup at home and noticed that it did have the "Business" category and my setup at work didn't.
I'm giving up...... Hopefully it will resolve itself over time. Only time can tell.

Did you notice if the same set of categories were on both handheld and desktop? Wondering if that's the difference. On mine they are different, and they don't behave after syncing.
I did notice, unfortunately, that there doesn't seem to be any way to delete categories once you make them on the desktop. Add, yes, edit/delete, no. Bummer.
Haven't heard back from support, so I'll e-mail them again and add this issue to it.

I thought the DT catagories synced with the Memo categories on the Clie. That's how mine is. Are you using some other memo replacement that might be interfering?

Uh...yeah...HandStory! Categories set on the desktop via Outlook notes do not match those on the Clie memo...never have...not in the ROM memo app or HandStory. Maybe that happens under certain combinations, but...

My desktop setting at work was missing one category, and my desktop setting at home was the same as the handheld. All have been set to the same categories. I notice though that HandStory tends to always put my Clips one category above the one I instruct it on the desktop.
I never noticed that you can't delete categories on the desktop. What a load of $&#@!!!!!
Let me know if you ever hear from support.

Think that's fun? Try adding a bunch of bookmarks in HandStory, only to discover they don't SORT after you put them in...very handy (not)...

I got a reply from HandStory support on the non-syncing categories. I have to troddle off to work, so I can't test this until tonight. Anyone else (with the same problem) that has time today to test this, be grateful to hear the outcome.

The problem can happen if you sync your Palm with Outlook. Please check the other users at ClieSource who have the same problem are syncing with Outlook as well.
HandStory imports Palm Desktop's memo category information and uses it directly. If you use a third-party program to HotSync with Outlook, the category information in Palm Desktop and the one in your Palm can be different and the problem you mentioned could happen.
If this is your case, please temporarily disable the Outlook sync program, sync your Palm with Palm Desktop, and enable the Outlook sync program back. In this way, Palm Desktop will have the most current version of the category information. You need to go through this procedure whenever you change the
category information in Palm.
For more information, please read the FAQ linked below.
http://www.handstory.com/support/download.html#14
If this is not the cause of your problem, please write us back with your Windows version, Palm Desktop version, HandStory version, and the list of application installed in Windows and Palm. We will try our best to investigate your problem further and assist you better. Also, sometimes, just uninstalling and reinstalling the latest version of Palm Desktop and HandStory solves a problem, too, if the cause is the unstable Windows system.

It is how the traditional Doc format works, so we just let it as it is.
We will forward your suggestion to the development team for their review. Even though we cannot guarantee whether or when the feature will be implemented in HandStory at this time, the development team is always trying their best to make a good program and satisfy our users. Please wait and see how HandStory progresses.

Well I got a chance to update my clips at home. And low and behold my categories stuck on the handheld. I'll be trying again here at work and if they don't stick here, I'll be removing the application and re-installing it. I post my results later today or early tomorrow.
Tried it at work. And no category sticking. So I'm going to try to remove the application and re-install it. Hopefully I'll be able to try this tomorrow.

JiGG:
Which application are you refering to here? HandStory? PocketMirror? PalmDesktop? And were you already syncing to Outlook?
Gary
Sorry would have been nice if I mentioned that, wouldn't it....
I'm going to remove HandStory from my desktop at work and try to re-install it. That is where I was missing the "Business" category and where I'm having the most problems. It is also where I do most of my updating of clips.
I have never synced with outlook.
So I'm hoping this will help my problem because it works fine when I update and sync at home but work is a problem.

Hope it works for you! This issue seems to be really inconsistant...on one machine where I sync to Outlook2000, the cats don't match up. On the laptop, where I've never synced to Outlook (but also don't sync to PalmDesktop), they don't matchup either.
I haven't started wholesale uninstall/reinstalls yet, but will...but I have reinstalled HS a couple of times, and that didn't fix it. Hopefully in your case it will!
Be nice to understand when/where this mismatch happens, but there are a lot of variables to it, so I guess it's off for experimentation....
Gary
Well I hope it works too.....
I won't dump HandStory if it doesn't work.... It's just something I'll have to live with. I'm just one that needs to have it working the way it should be.
I'll post my result tomorrow.
Well, no go with the add/remove of HandStory.
Oh well I'll just have to live with the cat's not sticking when I sync at work.

As you can see by my sig, I'm now moderating a HandStory forum over at Turcic's site, and so I should be able to figure these issues out! In my conversations with support they were adament that it was related to the PalmDesktop software, so I'll try and tear everything up and figure out what I can.
You da man, Gary.......
Keep me posted.
