I went to the Norcal Mobile Computing SIG (http://www.mobilecomputingsig.com/) meeting last night at Microsoft HQ in SF where one of the presentations were from Arkon (http://www.arkon.com/
) who came over to demonstrate its mount kits. I think I was the only Palm user at the meeting. People did comment on it though. Although I bet the ones who didn't comment were just too jealous...hehehhe

Anyways, I took a look at all of the Arkon offerings and pretty much all of them don't fit the UX-50 width wise (grippers on left and right of the ux). Most of the them are close but not enough. All except the

Powered PDA Mount Kit. The other mounting kits would fit in portrait mode (grippers on the top and bottom of the UX).

I asked him if he would consider making mounts specifically for the UX (No.) They'll be making them for the Axims though. At the end of the night, there was a raffle where the first prize was the GPS BT from Socket. I didn't get it but I got the 2nd prize (The Powered PDA Mount) and some other nifty stuff.

Here are some pictures that I took (sorry...they were taken in complete darkness when I first got it installed). The mount is supposed to be pretty secure (the guy lifted up a table with it) but when I came back in the morning it had fallen off the windshield so I'm probably going to email that VP about it. Still its a pretty cool product. Speakers are pretty good but I'll probably still use my cassette adapter. If the USB power cable works, this kit would be perfect for powering it up on the go since it has 2 USB ports as well as a DC-out.

I found that even though this mount does fit the ux-50 with the grippers on the side. That meant that I didn't have ready access to the power switch or the memorystick. With the grippers on the side though, you can have the clie flipped open and have it look cool. I'll try to get more pics later. And oh yeah, as you can see, there is enough room on the grippers for the extended battery.

Arkon doesn't make a Powered Kit that can power up a ux-50.
http://www.arkon.com/pdapower.html

The mount kit for all those models is the same EXCEPT the cable that goes from the kit to power the pda is different. I don't have the USB ux-50 power cable so I can't test to see if that works. What you could do is probably buy a kit and resell those usb pda power cables...maybe...

That's what I've been looking for when I go on long trips. But I don't need all the extras (cables, amplified speaker, etc.) that bump the price to $70. I would like to find something like that with an arm and a suction cup for the windshield that is alot less expensive.

they do have models that just to that, it's just that sideways (grippers on top and bottom of ux) its a pretty tight fit. Those models do not allow the grippers to be on the left and right of the ux. The grippers on the powered pda mount are much wider and allow for smoother in/out plus both orientations.

if you say that you're part of a palm/pocketpc user group, they bump the price down to $40. :D

In special instructions...type in

[Sneezy's Palm User Group] Discount. Pricing on [Model Number] is $39.95 each.

Change the stuff in the brackets to the right model/group. Make sure that the model number is one of those listed on the site.

The VP of marketing and sales gave me a whole list of what discounts they offer. Pretty sizeable.

What about simply attaching a cradle with a couple strips of velcro? You could use the old-style mobile cell phone (remember these?) mounting arm affairs. You then run permanent power (Sony mobile power adapter) to the cradle and just plug the UX in! The advantage is that all UX controls/switches are freely available - plus the unit charges while you drive.

Adding a Bluetooth GPS on your dash, and you're all set for road-warrierism!

Hey thanks for the ideas, fellas.

I've always thought of the velcro idea, but I keep my car immaculate, and the thought of velcro kinda makes me cringe.

I like the discount, though, $40 seems much more acceptable! Good catch!

Thanks again.

Since they do not have one for the UX, which model did you pick from the link you posted?

Jookwarrior...Which model number you used for your UX50 in the picture?

Since I got it for free, I didn't get a model number.

What I got was the
STANDARD WINDSHIELD & CONSOLE & VENT POWERED PDA MOUNT SOLUTION

not the Long Windshield solution

the cables (for powering other pdas) were useless to me so try to get a package that might have something useful for friends that do have those pdas.

MODEL CM516 looks good. Remember the only thing different with all these models are the cables that come with it.

I found that the mount doesn't fall off at all if you simply angle the arm so that it touches the dash. It hasn't fallen off in days.

The site REALLY needs work but here is the link...

Arkon Mount that works!!! (http://www.arkon.com/CM515.html)

I got the standard(516) instead of the long(517)

For me the standard is the perfect length.

So Jookwarrior how do You power up Your UX in the car? Is the power cable compatible with the holder? And could it be connected to cable GPS (for example Hiacom 204E)?

Thanks

J.

No there is no power going to the PDA just using the solution I provided. However, it is conceivable to attach a Sony power docking station to the car mount and using that to power it up.

Is there a power cable with cigarette lighter
adapter to plug a UX50 cradle ?

Any link to where it can be found ?

Thanks,
