I saw this on clieplanet and was horrified, as i had identified the hold button as the problem before reading the answer, yet at the end she says that it's just the hold button, so why leave the incorrect instructions up there?

Taken from http://www.clieuk.co.uk/cpsq.shtml:

Subject: Clie Problem

Dear Clie Queen,
My Clie Peg-n760c is not starting up. When I hit the reset pin in the back, the machine goes through the start up process, but when it reaches the date/time set screen, a message reading "Hold" appears and the clie shuts itself down. This reminds me of a computer going into "standby" mode. How do I get my clie to work properly again? Any assistance will be most appreciated.
Thank you.
Abe M. Sher

Hi Abe,
If you can't get your Clie back after a soft reset, you'll have to do a hard reset.

1. Take out your memory stick
2. Push the reset button on the back of your Clie
3. Then hold the power button until the logos coming up on the screen stop
4. Release the power button and press the center toggle button "up" when prompted (this will erase all your info and restore your Clie to it's factory settings)
5. Go through the set-up screens
6. On your PC-click on the "hotsync" symbol on the lower tool bar and select "custom" from the menu
7. On this screen you will double click on: date book, address book, memo pad, to do, and system, one at a time, then you will click on "desktop overrides handheld" and "done"
8. place your Clie in the cradle and perform a hotsync, you will need to select your username on your PC at the start

Most of your info will be restored though you may want to double check everything as some third party programs and/or their databases may be missing.

If you have installed any new programs, you may want to delete them, then add them back one by one to see if one of them is causing the problem. You will probably end up doing another hard reset, but at least you will know which one is the problem causer or if none of them are causing this problem.

Please don't hesitate to write back if you have problems any where along the way Thank-you for writing:)

NOTE: After many e-mails this turned out not to be Abe's problem, it was a stuck "hold" button.

well duh! How could someone who is supposed to be clie knowledgable have this person erase all their stuff and start over when you could simply tell them to move a switch! And why weren't the original intructions taken down? This strikes me as utter retardedness....

I agree, especially since the original instructions were to do a hard reset, which you want to avoid at all costs!!

Oh crud! My NX was doing the same thing, and I saw this post and thought it would help. I didn't read the end until after I erased everything!! [You got me ND!]

Seriously though, I agree. If they can edit it to put the note at the bottom, they should edit the whole thing to just say that the hold switch is on.

Kind of reminds me when my dad is asking me how to do something in Windows, I tell him to hit Alt-F4. Gets him every time! Of course, I make sure he saves all of his work first.

Wow! Reminds me of Compaq tech support. I know a lot of people with their PC's and when they call the tech support, even for simple problems, the only instructions they ever seem to give is, "Take out the CD that says Restore Disk, insert into the CD-ROM, restart your computer."

Restore disks are never a good option.

That reminds me for some reason of a guy who worked on computers for 10+ years, and he couldn't find the key to bring up the BIOS. He kept trying F1, and all the time it was "delete"!

I hope you let Clieplanet now that they should take it down or edit it further.
