How much music or video can you put in the various MS formats?
My budget is limited so i can't get the 256mb-1G size MS.
I have a 32 and 128 but i haven't loaded music or vids to them yet.

nkc 721,
32 mb is what most of the small MP3 players can hold. It's probably 30+ minutes of music. I've always had an MP3 player at the gym and used my Clie for data and vids. 128 will hold about 30 minute vid, depending on how you converted etc.

on the lowest quality my 128 mb stick was able to hold 4, 20 min videos.

i dont use MP3, i use OGG which takes up less than mp3. i can get around 80 songs on my 128 stick at about 3 minutes a song( average)

You also have to remember that a 128mb stick is not truly 128mb. You lose close to 7-8mb for the file system on the stick. What you end up with is a 120-122mb stick. That'll kill a song or two from your playlist.

I get 30-36 songs per 128 MB MS.

You lose 7-8 mb not because of the file system.
Because Sony is cheap and they define one mb as 1000kb
intead of 1024kb

The file system is only perhaps 400kb.

if you want more space for mp3s, (re)encode them as mono and you can lower the bitrate even more (mono at 64kbps is decent). i use even lower bitrates when i play my mp3s via the built in speaker in my clie (cause the speaker isnt that great to begin with)

yes you do "lose" the memory becuase of the file system. the FAT file system defines 1 meg as 1024kb. it is not becuase sony is cheap or is it something that just happens with sony memory it is with ALL memory products like hard drives and flash memory. 1000kb is the general accepted standard as one meg. what file system you choose can change the definition of a megabyte. ALL memory manufacturers not just sony do not know what file system you are going to use so they cannot assume you are going to use the FAT format or any other format. please research your information before giving out false information.

yes they can assume you will use FAT as I was under the impression that FAT was standart on flash media.  And what the clie (and anything else that uses them) expects to have on its memory sticks.
