Help,
I have a Palm m505 with v4.0 OS. How do I get all my info into the new tj25 I just bought? This is the first time in six years I have had problems with a palm OS, also my first clie, any suggestions?
Thanks.

This is what I did when I changed from my OS4 Clie to my new OS5 Clie (T615 to TJ35):
1st make sure that you are not using any hacks or overclocking programs like FastCPU on your old palm. I was and it caused a fatal exception requiring a hard reset. If you are, uninstall them.
Next perform a hotsync with your old palm.
Instal the Palm Desktop For Clie software that came with your new TJ (if it asks for a new hotsync ID during setup, use the same ID that you are using now)
Once the software is installed, sync your new Clie.
Hotsync will now probably ask you which user you wnat to use. If your hotsync ID shows up in the list click on it and select OK, if not, click new and type in your ID the same way it was on your palm. For example, I always use my name as my hotsync ID.
Hotsync will run for a few minutes and when its done, all your progs, schedule and address book entries should be transferred.
I hope this helps, if anyone sees that I made a mistake, please correct me or if anyone knows an easier way, post it please. This was the way i changed over from my 615 to TJ without losing anything.

David,
Thanks for the info. I did just as you described before I posted.
During the first sync a window popped up asking to pick a user, I picked my name (the only one listed) and all the sync windows just disappeared. There was an error message on the tj25 about a database. I tried to uninstall the 5.2 Os but got another error message, finally fixed that now the clie software comepletely ignores the old palm software. This is such a PITA.
Thanks again for the input, I will try to do an uninstall again and run the whole process one more time.

Jay, Have you installed the Palm Desktop Software for Clie yet? There are issues between Clies and Palms regular desktop software.
Also, if you have a program on your old palm that stores data on an external memory device (CF, SD, MMC) which is not compatible with the CLie, you will get an error message.
Also, Welcome to the Cliesource community.
Keep checking this thread, there are a lot of users that have much more experience thatn me and will be glad to assist you.

David,
I don't use extra cards or use any hack programs. I did install the clie software and now when I try to uninstall it I get an error 1309. problem reading addr20.dll
Now I have both OS's on my desktop and no way to remove them. This has turned into a real cluster. I am going to turn my guns on sony, they just can't make it easy, first the betamax and now this. I really liked this clie but it isn't worth the headache. If I can't get this figured out the clie will be returned and I'll just stick with the m505.
Once again thanks for your help.

this was what i did to transfer the data from my m100 to tj35
1) look for the folder of my desktop hotsync backup (d:\palm\[hotsync_name] )
2) make a backup of the folder
3) uninstall the old palm desktop
4) install the new sony desktop
5) hotsync the tj35 with the same hotsync_name
6) copy the backup folder over the new location (d:\sony handheld\[hotsync_name])
7) go to the setting of hotsync, select desktop to handheld
8) hotsync again.
data were transferred. not the programs as i expected i needed to install the latest versions.
After many uninstalls and reinstalls I finally got it done. One of my oversights was not typing the username the exact same from old to new OS.
Thank you for the info.

Like what? I've been using my SJ20 with Palm Desktop on two separate PCs, running two different OS's. Never had a problem! The only "issue" that I know of is that Palm's version is *newer* than the Clie Desktop s/w included on my Sony install CD.
Anyway, I had problems just going from Palm IIIxe to Sony SJ20 (OS3.5 to OS 4.1). There were some files that the Sony just didn't like. I could not get IR to work at all. Installed several times, with hard resets between. No luck! Ended up doing a clean install of *all* my third-party apps. That took some time, but it worked for me.

Sorry Palmgeek,
I tried to give the "short version" of it above. I am using Palmdesktop 4.1 with my TJ and it works. Some of the issues center around palms expense app that is not included in sony's version of palm desktop. Other issues have to do with Sony's USB driver for the Clie.
If you first setup palm desktop for Clie than install Palm Desktop 4.1, it should work. If it doesn't, you may have to reinstall Sony's USB Driver.
I really didn't go into details about it because I fealt that it was not fully related to the original post but in retrospect, I may have been wrong and thank you for pointing that out. :)

Oh, Sony has caught up with desktop 4.1... I don't use the expense application (wrote my own Smartlist to Go database) so I wouldn't have noticed. Palm's USB driver works fine with Windows 2000 (so far).
Which TJ do you have? I've been watching this board as I'm bent on trading my SJ20 for a TJ25. Might even go for the 35 if the prices come down enough. Sadly, I've read a lot of problem reports RE: the 35 (bad backlights, battery problems, etc.).
BTW - like your tagline... :-)

I have the TJ35 and like it very much. I switched from a T615C. If you are interested, here is where I purchased mine from. It is the lowest price by far and is NOT gray market.

I ordered it on sunday and picked regular 2nd day shipping for $14.95 and it was here by wednesday morning!
I am a bit leary about some of the threads about backlight problems. I hope it is not a widespread problem with the TJ's.
Anyway, I really like my TJ and the MP3 player sounds very Good compared to my Rio 600 that I have been using for a few years.
