View Full Version : alternative wifi cards ???
hi,
i consider catching the wirless train too. but the sony wifi cards are here hardly to get and much more expensive as other brands.
so my question: is it possible to use different modells than the sony ones? maybe with using the sony driver?
has anyone heard or tried something like this?

No. Everyone has tried. I even tried the Intel PC Card that is identical to the Sony one and it didn't work.

Has anyone tried to use a clone wifi card with the supplied programs that the sony card comes with?
Perhaps the restriction is on the software and not the card.
And if it was on the card, then the intel PC card should work since according to you it is identical, so with the right software you should be able to get it to work.

The Wl100 card can use intel drivers in a PC. I found the card that uses the same drivers (its a PCMCIA card). I bought a CF -> PCMCIA adaptor. My Clie thinks its a Wl100 card but it will not connect.
According to other sources each Wl100 card has a nuber and the software checks for it...or something like that. It was a waste of $40 becuase the adaptor cost $30 and the card was used on ebay for $9.99.

what is the name of the intel wifi cf card. i cannot find at the intel pages a product like this. i would like to try the sony drivers to run with that card. if it does not work i still can sell the card at ebay.

fogg, I'm still trying to figure out what makes the wi-fi card better than just using your cell phone with a data cable.
see my comments on thread: http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32385&highlight=bdhu2001
Also, what WL100 were the others talking about that they picked up at Best Buy for $20. Was it a previous Sony Wi-Fi card?http://www.cliesource.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=32318&highlight=WL100
the wl100 is the previous model of the wl110. i got told this one has the advantage to can be used on other platforms than only on the clie. the wl110 can be used on clies only.

fogg - Just takes a bit of looking. The Wl100 uses the intel drivers that were designed for the Intel PRO/Wireless 2011 LAN PC Card. So you need to buy that...and then the adaptor...

After you waste $40-50 and realize it doesn't work...let me know.
I did this already and posted my results...

bdhu2001 - With the Cell your limited to 14.4 connection speeds...WiFi is much quicker.
