I had my first opportunity to thoroughly test the Voice Recorder function of the UX and I'm happy to report, that I'm happy to report that I'm happy!!!!

I slipped a blank 256MB MemoryStick Pro, which incidentally gives you about 16 hours of recording time, into my UX and proceeded to record a meeting where the speaker was across the room and un-mic'd. It picked her up perfectly and resulted in about 20 megs of transferrable meeting notes.

Far better than taking notes.

:)

hm I played today shortly with UX but always I pressed capture/rec button, movie recorder started. is it possible to set this button exclusively to voice recorder ? or how does it work ? :-) (I'm too anxious waiting for my UX :_)

The voice recorder hardware is good, but I wish we had Palm's software. With the Palm software, you can categorize your voice recordings (like memos) and there is a "pause" function while you record.

Bring up the camera application, hit the pull down menu, select options, then Capture Button Setting...

That will let you do what you want to do.

Yes, touche.

Pause would be a excellent feature to have. A dev is probably already working on some of these things and I think we will see third-party software that will support these things in the future.

Understand, I believe a lot of developers pulled back to see if the UX was going to be a "player" in the PDA market.

I think we have proven that it is. :)

Crazy Smeggie,
Have you tried running the voice recorder file through software like Dragon Dictate? (I think that is the name?) I am curious to see if you could get a text dictation of the meeting. That would rock for class notes and such.
Thank you for your continuing input on the UX!!!

You bet!!

I haven't tried that yet...but I will. Indeed, that would fall squarely in the "very cool" pile.

However my sense tells me that because of the ambient background noise, it may not be able to clearly articulate the speaker's voice.

I'll try to give it a go this week and will report my findings.

:)

Wouldn't dragon dictate or naturally speaking have to have learnt the speaker's voice first..? I suspect you'd just get jibberish.. Probably very funny jibberish, but not very useful. :D

Some of the coolest things have been found simply by trying them to see if they work...

My wife and I went to an incredible blues concert on Saturday night and I figured I would try...voice recorder. I must say the results were amazing. I loaded the file into Cool Edit, did some messing around with the settings and the fidelity is actually acceptable.

I am a bit of an audiophile so the results were not spectacular by any stretch but....one of the best bootleg recordings I have heard in a long time!

This is good information.

My wife and I are going to see Chris Rock live in January and I plan to take "my little friend" along for the show.

They can't take my planner away, can they?

It's only just a lil' old planner. Digital recorder? What digital recorder? Damn, I didn't know this thing could do THAT!

Most of the security people would not know what it is and what it can do. :-)

crazy_smeggie, did you get a chance to test the voice to text ability? Can't wait!

No, not yet. However I do have Dragon Naturally Speaking Pro and I am also eager to try it.

Just need to find time to do it.

There have been threads about people doing this already. Most did not get very good results :(

Thanks. My expectations for success are already pretty low, so it won't be too painful if it tanks. :)

In the vein of: you won't know until you try, I'm gonna try it anyway.

Going back to the "pause" feature we were discussing earlier, has anybody tried to lift the Voice recorder software from a Tungsten and used it on the UX? I know the sound playback API's are the same, but I dunno about the sound recording. I may try to go to my local office depot tonight and have a surreptitious beaming session with the T3 on display...;)

I went to a seminar yesterday and tested it out. The recording's quality was outstanding! I played it back for people in my office and they were really impressed. It was just like the speaker was right there! :-D

I've been very impressed with the voice recorder myself. Once again the UX continues to shine as an all-around PDA. Palm and Tapwave can keep their T3 and Zodiacs.......

Yikes, I would think adout taking the chance even! I suppose you could jet back to the car if they tried though.

I use the voice recorder in meetings and it does come in handy, but I too wish that software wise it was better.
