I wonder really if speed of CF do really matter THAT much?

The source of the question is shall I buy a *cheap* CF-card or spend little more? Main purpose would be Movie resp MP3. And for these two isn't a normal CF-card speedy enough? I don't wanna win a speed contest.

The main differences I see are the write-speed. But even for Voice Recording or Movie(?) shouldn't it be sufficient? If speed rulez then a MD would be the best choice, but here I doubt the power consumption.

Any ideas?

The applications youmention have a fixed bandwith which is based on slower cards. So then speed doesn't matter. When you start running GPS navigaton programs or other programs with card based databases (or for that matter something like PowerRUN) then speed would matter.

Besides, for movies you probably need a large card and larger cards usually are faster anyway.
