Definitely ShadowPlan. The PDA component is definitely the most flexible out there and the support from the developer -- Jeff Mitchell -- is supserb. Highly recommended.

Cons:

The Windows desktop portion is okay -- there is room for a great deal of improvement but at the rate that Jeff moves it its only a matter of a short period of time. And he's supporting the Mac/OSX too!!!

Overall can't be beat.

ShadowPlan gets my vote too, then again I've not used the others in two years. The software is awesomely powerful and new features come out every couple of months.

The desktop is lagging behind, but Jeff has stated desktop will be top priority for a while.

What exactly are you looking to do with the program, that might help us advise you a bit more.

I use ThoughtManager (got that using the free software offer when I bought my T665C), Progect, and ShadowPlan. Probably could manage with any one of them since my needs are simple. Have been using ThoughtManager lately because I can set it so that alternate lines have a colored background.

Progect shows the completion date to the side, which can be handy, and it also has progress bars. It's B&W and not hi-res, but I think it's also free.

Might want to download all your choices and try them to see which one does things they way you want to do them.

ThoughtManager! I have suggested they add "percent complete" so that it can become more of a project management tool, but for outlines, it does the job. It also could export to MSWord better.

Shadow does both of those things, and it's HI-RES plus . . . the most recent version of Shadow has color THEMES!!

It's just getting better & better!

Yep, Shadow rules! Jeff has to be the most involved and responsive developer I've ever come across. The application has an amazing feature set... and keeps getting better.

Shadow is the best. The Desktop version is much improved from a year ago, and the PDA program is by far the most versatile.

Progect. It's powerful enough for me, and it's free.

ThoughtManager here.

I like the total package better, and I especially like the ability to type new items inline as opposed to going to an input box.

ShadowPlan for me. This app has too many features to be detailed here, and comes with responsive developer! Can't ask for more :)

I really prefer Bonsai.  Most of my planning is done on the PC rather than the PDA (thought some on the PDA also).  Bonsai has a great desktop app.  I love it!

Bonsai is perfect for me. Hi-res+, great NR70V thumboard support, and in-line editing. Makes it really simple to use it to take notes during lecture. ThoughtManager is also pretty good but by the time they added hi-res+ support, I had already gotten used to Bonsai.

I've used Bonsai for years, and there is no competitor that has the proven ability to maintain the outline on both the desktop and the PDA. I do a lot of my work on the desktop at the office, and no other outliner has a mature, robust desktop component with easy synchonization.

Bonsai rules!

Shadow is the greatest. There is so much power in this program. And having a developer as great as Jeff the program just keeps getting better.

I wouldn't say it's the best: I tried to use it for note taking and it doesn't search and highlight the string **inside** a note.

So what outliner/planner do you like MikeLang?

If only Shadow had a desktop as good as Bonsai's. But, Bonsai is still great!

Is there any way to see the result of a poll if you don't vote? What if I'd never tried either, but wanted to see which one you all thought was the best?

I too use Bonsai mainly because of its easy drag and drop. It was the best, for me, of those I tried as a plain outliner/brainstormer. Mind you I didn't need many of the features of Shadow.

However, unless I'm missing something, it's not what I would call completely hi-res. You can use hi-res fonts for the main screen that lists the outlines, but you can't use them in the outlines themselves. I'm using Fonthack with the OS5 fonts applied to all apps. Am I doing something wrong?

What Clie are you using? On my NX-60, under Menu-> Options-> Preferences-> Fonts I've got a choice of 8 fonts.

I really enjoy Bonsai, it's changed the way I organize things on my PDA. In fact, Bonsai's mapped to my "ToDo" button.

T665. Under Menu->Options->Preferences->Fonts I get 8 fonts for the List Font, but only 3 each for Outline Font and Note Font (standard, bold, and large bold).

And I too have Bonsai mapped to my ToDo button, although I use EasyLaunch and have both Bonsai and ToDo mapped.

I use Thought Manager for now. I am not completely satisfied, though, and would rather have something like Progect.

Progect, mostly because it is free and darn cool. Have not tried others to any great length, but want to try Shadow and Bonsai now.

definitely ShadowPlan!! thanx to the ppl who recommend me this great app. Way more flex-able than Bonsai imo :) I did tried the latter but it seems a bit rigid to me plus dont like the way they numbered the childs. of course it's just a matter of preference.

I asked Natara and it turns out that you can't use Sony Hi Res fonts in text edit areas. So since Bonsai allows in-line edits, no hi-res or small fonts on the T665. I imagine that the NX which has OS 5, allows small fonts everywhere. Oh well.

Bonsai for me. How serious am I? I paid for it ;)

I like the way it nests.

Listro is the only Palm/Windows outliner to have columns. Great for storing a lot of data

Bonsai. I used to use Shadow but switched to Bonsai for the excellent desktop and the inline editing

I voted other way back when. I have been using Bonsai, and love it. I must have registered it about 8 months ago or so. The desktop app rocks. The PIM integration on the palm is awesome. Great tool configuration for on the screen tools. Limitless information visible in outline view for each item, start, complete dates, catagories, icons, links, notes....The only thing that I can think of that Bonsai could add would be the ability to make a doodle sketch within items. I wish I could change my vote, there would be one less other and one more Bonsai.
