I just returned my TJ35 to Best Buy after a week of ownership. The TJ is really a great looking machine and has some great features (I actually liked the front mounted scroll wheel - I'm left handed) but the screen was just too dim for me... I was migrating from a TG50, I thought I could do without the keyboard but the keyboard had become more important to me that I thought!
I also missed Movie Player, Photo Editor, and the voice recorder.

The screen brightness was the most important of all those factors but they all played a part in my decision. I am going to get a UX50 next week which has all the features I missed from my TG50 plus the low res camera, WiFi and of course, Bluetooth that my TG50 had.

I was probably trying to get/expect a T665 replacement that also offered VG and "settled" for the TJ35....

The TJ35 is a great machine and a great value, but comparing the screen to the UX50, my old TG50, it is lacking....

(I also have a friend with a Tungsten E and of course that screen just blows away the competition. But... he has already gone thru 2 machines for various problems.... the Sony's always seem to have fewer issues and better quality control....)

Isn't it true that SONY produces the Tungsten E screen? (this is verifiable when you open up the TE, and Sony's logo is clearly marked on the screen.....as some have posted this tidbit. Another company also produces TE screens too)

But what's ironic is that Sony couldn't even use a brighter screen for the TJ35.....especially if they can make one for the competition.

If you weren't happy with the screen brightness on the TJ35, you may be disappointed with the UX as well.

To keep the price down, Sony probably went with cheaper parts to make the TJ's. This is a common practice in the Pocket PC world as well as the PC/Mac market. Cheaper bits and pieces means they can sell stuff more inexpensively and hopefully get more units sold.

Its a shame because with a brighter screen, this could be the killer machine....

To all who complain about TJ35 brightness...

Are you guys sure the backlight is on? Please read all the postings regarding back light problems. It may well be that the light in your units does not come on at all!

Just a thought...

The light on my unit was definitely on.... holding down the power button for a few seconds turns off the backlight and it is then almost unreadable in normal room light. Adjusting the backlight to maximum only yields a screen as bright as the SJ series and one that is NOT anywhere as bright as my TG50. The new NX series and the UX models are brighter than the TJ25/35. Palm's Tungsten E and T3 screens put the TJ series to shame.... The office I worked in was overpoweringly bright and the TJ was difficult to read in that lighting. The Tungsten E was very acceptable in that lighting (but I am a Sony fan)....

gotta agree with mdlsimpson, if you do have backlight problems immediately send to sony, and have them fix it up.
