View Full Version : Using a Nokia 6600 as a Bluetooth GPRS Modem

Hi. I had no trouble at all using my old cell phone, a SE T68i, as a modem for my clie tg50 through bluetooth.
But I can't seem to get it to work with my new Nokia 6600. Nokia is not much help (they confirmed that my AT commands are correct). And, of course, Sony's support is as slow, rude, obnoxious and unhelpful as always.
Has anyone gotten these two working together?

You sure Nokia features the "Dial-up Networking" profile of bluetooth on the 6600?

Well, since all the other Nokias do, and I can dial through it from my laptop, I'm pretty sure.

Sorry, but to tell you that Nokia sucks in Bluetooth technology.
I also use TG-50 with T68i & it works flawlessly...
Sony Ericsson BT is much stable.

It's nothing to do with Bluetooth - I have the same problem trying to get my NX70V to use my new Nokia 6600 as a GPRS modem through infrared.
I've done this before with a Nokia 6310i and it was a breeze, but the 6600 just doesn't want to know.
I suspect that the 6600 needs a special init string for the modem to initialise it, as when I connect to the 6600 through a terminal emulator from the Clie I see a lot of garbled junk, and AT commands don't do anything, but other phones I've tried have behaved perfectly.
Anyone know of an init string value that works for the 6600? (I haven't tried the PC software setup yet but will do soon to see if that gives any clues).

There is a setting on the Nokia 6600, in Settings/Connections/GPRS that needs to be set to "when needed". If left at "when required", it won't work (it is clearly a bug).
With this setting, GPRS via infrared will work well, via bluetooth there is still the annoying problem that drops the connection.
Anybody made any progress on this?

Anyone uses the 6220 with the EDGE technology? It is about twice the speed of GPRS.

Wow! you people in the far east get things a lot earlier than us....Is that EDGE technology similar to 3G? Somehow I think it isn't but if you have any info on it I would be very much eager to hear about it :D

EDGE from what I've read is available in certain U.S. markets now through at&t wireless, (you may wanna check their website) but is not quite true 3G... they're supposed to roll out on a larger scale next year. don't use at&t so I can't judge the performance. not too many bluetooth EDGE phones out there yet, but I suppose eventually if T-Mobile and / or Cingular implement EDGE as well, the phones will follow quickly...
