HI! Quick question . . . I get 'garbled' text when I click on download. Do you have to do a 'save as' with a right click?

You have to rename it to the schema that Movie player needs:

MOV00001.MQV | NOT Southpark.MQV

Just tap the link to it and a window should pop up, and hit OK and it will save it to your MS.

1. Make sure it is in the correct directory:
[Memory Stick Root]\MQ_ROOT\100MQV01\

2. You have to rename the file(s) to:
MOV00001.MQV, MOV00002.MQV

Example:
Part1-A.MQV -> MOV00001.MQV
Part1-B.MQV -> MOV00002.MQV
Part1-C.MQV -> MOV00003.MQV

.. and so on

I don't use that naming scheme on the files as it would be impossible to know what the video is of when storing them on my computer!

Yeah, I got really lucky there. My webhoster, Flockhosting.com, is run by the same guy who runs Happypalm.com

Since the owner and webmaster, Chuck Brown, is also a Palm enthusiast, he graciously agreed to let me host the videos on the Happypalm.com server.

I have probably about 3-4GB of videos and growing by the week!

Try doing a right click on the link and select "Save Target" or something along those lines.

Some browsers may not understand and try to think the video is actually some kind of webpage code.

Having the current episode in MQV format would be good, akin to what nocday has been doing with South Park, Mail Call, and now Line of Fire. 24 is one of those shows where it might be nice to watch the previous episode during a lunch break on the day before a new episode. As far as the other seasons, I have season one and two on DVD since so those aren't really that necessary.

I have Western Digital SE 8mb Cache 80GB & 160GB HDs, plus the Sony DVD +- r/rw drive for backing up stuff.

All in all, I probably have around 10GB of raw videos in MPEG1 format and right now about 4GB of MQV videos.

Hour long videos after having commercials edited out run around 900-1500MB (or .9-1.5GB) in MPEG2 720x480 format

I compress down to MPEG1 320x240, which average around 300-500MB

The whole editing and compression takes cumulatively around .5-2.0 hrs processing time to complete depending on the length of the video.

The largest raw (undedited) video I have had was about 15GB (about 4hrs).

I have 3 papers that I need to write btw today and tomorrow morning, so I won't be posting any new videos until most likely Friday/Saturday this week.

I have quite a few videos in the works: TRL (1/20), Boiling Point (1/20) and Mail Call (1/18), 24 (1/20), South Park episode tonight, and 5 episodes of Quantum Leap on SciFi Channel from today also.

Slow Jams - Twista feat Kanye West & Jamie Foxx

I have alot more. It just takes a little bit of time for me to convert using Image Converter but there will be more!

Nicholas - what settings do you use for sound when you downgrade to MPEG1? I've got some VCD quality shows that I've converted but the sound always starts to lag in the MQV file.

One problem, how do I download on my ux-50 using netfront? I tried tapping on the link and instead of popping up a bow asking where to download to it tries opening the link as a page, and then stops due to the page being too large. Any ideas? don't want to have to hot synce this onto my palm, plus my Wi-fi connection in my clie is quicker than my dial-up in my desktop pc.

1. I use the hauppauge WinTV PVR-350 cpture card
2. The actual software I use I bought later separate: Snapstream BEyond TV
3. I then use TMPEnc Plus to cut out commercials
4. I then use TMPEnc to shrink down to 320x240
5. Finally, I use IC 1.1 to convert to MQV

I have been following this thread for a bit now.

I loaded Kinoma player and then downloaded your Southpark porn episode for the SJ33. When I went to run it on my TJ35 it said that the Audio is an unsupported format and ran silent :)

Do you know is there something special about the SJ33 of have I done something wrong

Is it possible to convert the MQV's to Kinoma myself from the Mqv files on your site? I am happy to buy Kinoma producer if this will do it.

I seem to be stuck with Kinoma as I cannot find Movieplayer anywhere and I have no player bundled with the TJ35.

The reason I have avoided uploading to the FTP server is the upload bandwidth. It is even slower than the server I have been using.

I have about 8.5GB of videos on my server now. It would take several days straight to upload that much stuff to the FTP server.

Does anyone know of a server that charges minimal costs and has high bandwidth & storage??

I know it's been a while since the last posting, so here it goes!

I am in the process of uploading and posting 11 new videos, almost 2 GB of videos. They should be available by some time tomorrow morning at the lastest I think.

Herein lies the problem. I mentioned earlier and in another posting about bandwidth problems and I did not hear from anyone other than possibly going to pay model, but I am not going to do that b/c I would be blatantly stepping over the over if I took in any kind of money for posting these videos.

So here's the deal:
1. No one offered any server space of anything or any hosting companies that I could look into
2. Thus, I am not going to do anything

If the bandwidth that has been alloted for the video traffic (about 300GB/month) gets used up very quickly, then everyone will just have to wait until end of that particular month, i.e. ->March 1st, before ANY videos will be available to download.

I am sorry, but I put out the word and got a lukewarm to nonexistent response.

If anyone has server space and the bandwidth to kill, PM me and we can look into maybe moving some of the older videos to your server or something.

I will NOT tolerate any belly aching nor whining about being locked-out from downloading videos b/c the bandwidth has been used up.

If there is WHINING and it gets personal or to persistent, then I will STOP completely and TAKE DOWN all the videos.

I hope no-one takes this personnally. Until now we have had a VERY good thing going. If people want to be able to continue downloaded hundreds of GBs of videos, than help me find a free or lowcost solution. My budget is limited to no more than a $10/mo expenditure for possible extra bandwidth/storage.

I have had a button where people can donate money to my Paypal account and have gotten ZERO donations. I am doing this video capture and processing out of my free time.

ncoday, have you thought about hosting the movies as bittorrents? If the same movies are repeatedly downloaded when they are first uploaded, then bitorrent could spread the bandwidth across many sources.

Could you give me the skinny on how to do this??

If I could go to my host server with some good, easy to understand info, he might be game.

I'm guessing that the client is not what we're looking for...we probably need to talk trackers! The traffic coordinator of the BT system!

Basically, a BitTorrent tracker will manage who is downloading and uploading files. The PC running the tracker can also run a client that connects to the tracker to seed the file. There are several free trackers avaliable for use and some are for certain files only by discression of the admins running them. IE, there are trackers dedicated to things like Anime, E-Books, and other content...

The trackers hand out the .Torrent files, and also manage network communications. I'm not exactly clear on how this is done, but that is what happens. To make a .Torrent file to upload to a tracker, you need to either get a .Torrent file maker or a Client that supports creation of a .Torrent file. Confusing, but Google will help. Basically, you will have to make a .Torrent file for each file that you will seed, or host. Note that the .Torrent file is a very small file, and is basically a URL on the tracker to identify which file to download, and maybe some checksum information and stuff.

The tracker can't do anything without a seeder, which is where your server will come in. The server will need to run a BitTorrent client with the file associated with the .Torrent, and it will become a seeder. When someone connects, it will be seeding the movies, and when people download them they leech it from your server. The way BT works is that while they leach, they seed the parts of the file they have to other people who are leaching. In a perfect sceneario, the server seeds (uploads) random parts of the file to many different clients, and those clients will seed those parts to other clients who don't have it so the server would essentially upload once and the clients would share the data.

I can't seem to keep on track due to an extreme lack of sleep, but I will try to conclude...

Simply put, asside from a .Torrent file creator, you need 2 things... 1) A tracker to use, and it can be your own private one or a public one that you can find. 2) A BT client to run on the server that will seed the files.

Hope this information helps.

Unfortunately, NO ONE can download ANY videos until the alloted bandwidth is reset, on March 1st!

This is absolutely ridiculous.

I for one really enjoy(ed) all the videos you put up and think this is a shame that everyone takes, takes takes here but can't pony up some $$$ to help NCO move to a better server. I remember you (NCO) saying your budget for a new server host was around $10 a month.

I for one am currently (not for long, I'm graduating in May) a poor college student but I could easily part with a few bucks to help out. NCO, if you PM me with your address I will have a few bucks on your way in the morning.

Of all the people who downloaded videos, can't you donate like A DOLLAR OR TWO!!? If all the people who took videos off his site give just a DOLLAR..his problem will be solved instantly.

A lot of people giving just a small amount ($1) adds up quick.

What's going to happen (bet on it) is you will have a MASSIVE assault on your server on the first of every month by people who waited to download, spoiling it for the rest of us.

Thanks Winexprt, I am also a poor graduating college student. Finishing in March.

What you said about the assault on the server is highly likely and the bandwidth will get used up in just a few days instead of it lasting a few weeks like it did this month, oh well.

Ncody,

I just want to say thanks. Right now as im typing this post im watching the Simpsons where Lisa becomes School President on television.

This was advertised on television as a brand new eposide. I had it downloaded from your site nearly 1 month ago.

When i first watched it on my Clie i thought it was an old episode that i hadnt seen before but it turned out to be the opposite.

How wrong was i?

Keep up the excellent work !! I can only hope that you put more Simpsons episode on for us

NCO is probably too modest to start naming prices (maybe I'm wrong) but as I said a few post ago, we each really don't need to be donating a ton of money here individually. There are LOTS of members here for sure who got videos off his site (U know who u are ;) ).

If we all gave around $5 (which I just sent BTW) he should easily be covered for higher bandwidth.

Let's just not give TOO much here..we don't want him to suddenly be ROLLIN' in new PDA's! LOL -kidding -

I VERY much appreciate the support and doncations, they will help.

I am working with the server owner to hash out viable options.

He mentioned that at $150/month, a dedicated server with 40GB of storage and 600GB dedicated bandwidth could be created.

Sound good/viable?

The money people are contributing will ONLY be used for the server, but may not be used immediately. I want to make sure I get the best value for the money people have so graciously contributed. Unfortunately, I don't forsee an immediate solution that will put the server back online before the bandwidth is reset on March 1st. I apologize for that.

I am working with the server owner and discussing many options. I am still capturing videos and will store them on my HD.

I will give a hint to one option I am thinking (just thinking, don't have a cow yet) about. That is an individual quota system. Basically each individual will register (free or very low cost, again thinking; nothing definite) and will be alloted so many MBs or GBs per month.

My reasoning behind thinking about this is I suspect that part of the problem is that people are downloading every single video and I know for sure that no-one out there can store and watch 3-4GB of videos on their CLIE at the same, so probably many MBs or even GBs of videos sit on your hard drive. I reason that an individual quota system will make you think twice about whether or not you REALLY need to download ALL the SouthPark episodes at once or you could just pace yourself.

Once again, don't have a cow as NOTHING has been set in stone, except the current bandwidth restriction which in all likelihood won't go away before March 1st. Just wait and watch the videos you already have. They are all good and funny with no commercials. Won't hurt to watch the same SouthPark episode more than once to pass the time on the Subway or plane flight.

I want to avoid a strict monthly membership system for many reasons at all costs, but I will not fund the site myself nor allow a few generous soles (you know who you are: THX) to fund a server abused by many.

PBM808
02-18-2004, 02:24 AM
in that case maybe you could burn requests to CD and ship them for that small fee? 600-700 megs in one pop would be loads better than limiting per user DL to a fraction of that. of course, that would require more time on your part, but just a thought.

tenderidol
02-18-2004, 02:27 AM
Individual quota system sounds fair... As you said there are ton of details to figure out with that, though.
I dont mind paying to register and have an access to the mqv videos you painstakingly created.

ncoday
02-18-2004, 03:10 PM
UPDATE:

In the short term, my server admin and I feel that an individual quota system might be the ideal short-term solution until a dedicated download server is created which he has not given me a timetable for.

I am VERY thankful for those who have donated $$. I have received over $60US (won't mention names) for reasons to come.

I am thinking that those who donate will MOST likely have a higher quota than those who just download.

Also, to ensure there is a funcational quota for everyone involved, there will likely be a limit to the number who are admitted.

I say this because if say 600 people want a quota, then there would be a small quota for most everyone, not fair. Once again, I have not worked numbers or limits, but am thinking about it.

Unfortunately, free things must and always come to an end for the large part. This system, at least in the beginning will be subjective to a degree. Just a warning. Many bugs and details will have to be worked out.

I can say for definite that if we do go to an ind. quota system, those who donate will get higher quota than everyone else, just not sure what yet.

Another, if enough people donate, we should be able to get more bandwidth. I will be passing on the donations to the server admin. I am NOT keeping any of the money. He mentioned that at $150 month, the bandwidth could feasibly be doubled to 600GB/month which would mean higher quotas.

ncoday--will the bandwidth problem persist if you only offer a few episodes a month? I don't know how many people are actually downloading this stuff, but maybe you can get by if you only trickle out the episodes. That would save having to set up a complicated quota system. Also, people who can't afford a subscription could still participate.

Just a thought, and thanks again for what you've done.

- I have not heard from my server admin, so now plan yet in place. Thus, the 300GB/month bandwdith is in effect for March. i suggest people do not rush the server or it will have the bandwdith used up very quickly.

- There have been many donations up til now. I appreciate them and ask they still keep coming.

About Tomorrow....

I know the bandwidth is about to be reset tomorrow and there will be temptation to go download like crazy, but I strongly advise against that if "you" do not want to use up the badnwidth quickly and have to wait until April 1st to be able to get more videos.

Only download what you KNOW you WILL watch within the next few days and please be relistic. This is a communcal service.

I already have about 900 MB of videos ready to upload and probably another 800-1300MB more coming (Namely a 4 hour series: In The Footsteps of Christ) that aired on the history channel yesterday.

So I will be using about 2-3GB myself of uploading videos.

I just ask that everyone ration yourself and only download what you need and will watch.

Yes, I got one swimsuit video today (2001). Got home tonight and saw that error message. I think it's definitely not a coincidence.

He might not have exceeded his bandwidth (is it possible to go through 300GB in one day!?) but there might have been such an onslaught that his hosting company said "WHOA" and pulled the plug.

From what I saw yesterday during the period the server was up, it was under heavy stress. It timed out during downloads, and the transfer rate was all over the map, too - these resource demands could have forced the admin to pull the plug to protect access to other sites sharing these resources.
It would be interesting to know how many users were hitting the system to see if the proposed capping scheme would work. It would be a big pain to administer if there were 100s of users, but probably very effective if the community is smaller.

03-02-2004, 02:38 AM
To prevent anymore pounding of the server until it is up, I am cutting off access to the videos until further notice.

Hounding the server won't help. Sounds like ppl did not listen if that is the case of it getting hit hard.

I might just have to institute a make shift kind of control system in the mean time.

Stay tuned!

I found out what happened and it was as I suspected.... :(

People flooded the server and it had to be taken down because other people who are using the server were affected. This is getting irritating personally.

I found out that some people are using downloading managers and also opening multiple downloads, causing the server to get overloaded.

Thus... I am going to agree with the server admin and now everybody will be limited to just one concurrent download. No more opening 3 or 4.

We are also going to implement a type of download control software that will prevent how many times a certain file can be downloaded. The limits are going to be set so that the bandwidth will not be "blown" quickly. I impose considerable limits on the larger and more popular videos.

Also, in case no-one noticed, I got rid of the movie trailers and the Kinoma Music videos. They were taking up too much space.

A great service is geting abused. WARNING: It will go away if continued abuse continues.

This was done to prevent people from linking to the files from other websites or do mass downloading using downloader programs.

I understand some of the frustration some are feeling, but it had to be done unfortunately.

On the Mac side, use Safari and select "Download Linked File As.." I know this will work as I also have a Mac and use Safari 1.2 on Panther.

GRRR, THis means that it won't work for me on my mac. It just loads a page with gobbly gook.

Not with Safari it won't, but Internet Explorer 5.2 for OS X will save the file correctly - click and hold on the link and choose Download Link to Disk. You will get the proper MQV file. I have not yet figured out why Safari saves the Happypalm link instead of the MQV file.

If you are in OS 9.x or below, again - Internet Explorer will save the file correctly if you click and hold on the link and choose Download to Disk.

How about a special link for Mac users? I can't download any MQVs, it just saves an html file called www.happypalm.com. :(

I guess I will have to give it a try on the Mac at work. I doesn't work with mozilla or netscape on a solaris/unix machine.

I am hoping to be able to setup an FTP server which has appeared to be the best options b/c ind quotas can be best implemented with FTP servers.

Another suggestion, I've noticed tha Firewalls can cause problems.

Try telling your FW to let everything in from my site, www.ncoday.com

I use ZoneAlarm Pro asnd ran into problems until I told it to allow everything from that domain. The server is looking that the request comes from my website and not clicked on from anywhere else.
