I have the same problem as the Mac owners above...but I use XP!!

If I do a right-click, 'save as', I get a box that says the internet site cannot be opened. if I 'click here' I get the happypalm website.

Oh, it looks like the server is down or something. I get a message if I try to open an mqv file in a new window.

The server is not down. To prevent peolple from linking to the videos, the server is setup to only accept requests from my website.

However, as a side effect, doing a right click and save as does not work. You have to do a left click and make sure your firewall is not set to highly restrictive for my website.

Hey, guys, I've got the Molly Star Racer trailer converted to .MQV format. It's excellent and about 8MB. I'm looking for someone to host it so CLIE owners can share it.

If interested, post at

To summarize everything said:

Because people were using up the bandwidth alloted for the month like there were no tomorrow, working with the server admin there have been some changes made:

1. Any and all requests to download videos must originate as a click from my website.
- Thus, if you try to do a right-click, that won't work on any platform/browser.
- Only left-clicks work
- Macs -> Use IE instead of Safari, it works
- Your firewall might be causing the problems, especially Zonealarm. set "dl.happypalm.com" as allowed for everything in the Privacy/Sites section.
2. No more opening more than one concurrent download. Basically, no longer starting 10 downloads and going to bed. There is a restriction to just 1 concurrent download at a time.

I have heard some people complaining that they could not download using UNIX or their Macs or whatever. Unfortunately, I am at the point of saying TOUGH!

This is a free service. I do not charge any kind of membership fees for many reasons. Some VERY kind souls have donated money and that is much appreciated. There is a solution for Macs. I don't have a *NIX machine, so I cannot test any kind of a solution.

I will try to do anything and everything I can, but I still don't think maany realize that considerable time and effort is required to convert the videos!!

For example: For each 1/2 hour episode of SouthPark/MailCall/Dilbert:
1. I first have to edit out the commercials and then re-render -> 1-1.5 HOURS
2. Then, take that MPEG2 file and convert to MPEG1 -> 30-45 MINS
3. Then run Image Converter -> 10-15 MINS
4. Then upload the ~70-80MB file using FTP -> 30-45 MINS

TOTAL= ~2.5-3.5 HOURS for EACH 30min SouthPark.Dilbert Episode.

For the 1 hour episodes or shows, add another 1.5-2 HOURS to that total.

For a frame of reference, if I got paid just min wage, I would receive about $50/episode up there and there are easily 50+ videos up there.

I take 16 credits and work 30 hours a week at my job AND find the time to edit and convert the videos. I am working almost 2 Full-Time jobs alone.

Now, after my little ranting & raving, I appreciate the compliments many have given and that is mainly why I still continue doing it.

Yeah, I do really appreciate the effort that you have put into getting these (particularly South Park) videos up and running.

We don't get South Park on any channel here at the moment and you have put on many episodes that I have never even seen!

I definitely appreciate the work that you have done. as far as providing download compatibility, one solution might be to zip the movies. This would allow left click downloading by almost all browsers AND would help to relieve some of the stress on your bandwidth since the files would be smaller.

I checked out the option of dong comression, and on a sample 77MB video, the RAR files was 76MB.

Not worth the extra effort and tremoundous time that would be required to compress all the videos.

I found out that currently 54GB of the bandwidth has been used and we are only on the 4th of this month.

The admin said this is less than last month, but at this rate we will still get locked out b/c of bandwidth before the end of the month.

Got spiderman, harry potter and star wars to test as QuickTime and it work perfectly.

3 Step Procedure
============
Find movie with "download" link and right click "Save As" to Computer.

Run "Data Import" and connect TH55 to PC.

Find the file and right click on file. Pick "Convert for Clie". Pick F: drive.

You could probably download directly to memory stick if you do the following.

Run "Data Import" and connect TH55 to PC.

Find movie with "download" link and right click "Convert for Clie". Again, pick F: drive.

The first procedure worked for me on my TH55. I tried other procedures outlined in other thread and got myself wrapped around and confused.

Hope this help.

There is a program in effect that requires all requests for download to come from my website. If you have a firewall that removes referrer information, then that could be one problem. another, are you using a Mac??

Safari has a had time downloading the MQV videos, use IE For mac and there should be no problem.

I don't quite understand the second question.

Adding New Series:

I am now going to be also recording the new third season of "The Shield"

The premiere is tomorrow night.

I am thinking of putting some videos on the chopping block to make room for new stuff. Don't know yet though which ones.

I will obviously keep the SouthPark, Simpsons, Dilbert and a few others obviously.

Getting Killed: Humor Videos, Misc Videos & Shorts
- Reason: I don't plan to record any more of those, got enough to do with all the others and will save space.

Ones thinking of "killing": All Kinoma, for the same reason as above, don't have the time to do the extra encoding

Nope...

I use the WinTV-PVR350 from Hauppauge:
http://www.hauppauge.com/html/wintvpvr350_datasheet.htm

I then use Snapstream BeyondTV to record the programs into MPEG2:

Nope. I don't really have the space or time with all the other shows I am recording.

I've got a backlog of over 10 shows already to be edited and converted. I don't realistically have the time to add any more shows without some kind of actualy regular income for doing this.

You should consider offering them for download via BitTorrent. That way, you're bandwidth won't suffer as much since with BT everbody's downloading from everybody, instead of everybody downloading from... you :)

That, of couse, presumes there's people constantly downloading one of the files. If not, you're back to the same situation - but I would personally think if the current case would be the worst-case-scenario, it's still better than no-scenario.

Hope it helps.

BT would indeed be nice if EVERYONE stayed on - but as from my experience from BT definately not always the case - now something like maybe a PDA DirectConnect setup? That'd be nice then there could be hubs and people could share in a online sharing community (plus filesizes would have no limits) - I know the DC++ code is open source, any coders out there?

Lots of options - none too 'easy' to impliment quickly and effciently sadly. Though as the 'admin' for dl.happypalm.com I am looking at a more dedicated set of machines for downloads - then have the downloads arranged over several servers to rotate which one takes the bandwidth hit each time someone clicks - but thats a ways off and I can't afford to offer that much bandwidth for free - so definately some downsides to getting more bandwidth and such setup.

Anywhoo - the real reason for the post is to note current bandwidth:

225 / 300 - 75GB left.

As for your Firewall information, you need to find the root IP for the Wireless router that you are using.

You don't have a SW firewall running on your local computer?

The HW firewall must be very restrictive. Without knowing more about your setup, I could not really start to analyze how to solve your Firewall problem.

260/300GB - 40GB left. Hopefully bleeds into the 20's this month so only a few days to wait.

However I am not sure how much longer I can offer these downloads as I am having customers complaining about lag at peak times who use this server as well - but if the hosting solution is going to change I'll let Nicholas know with some advanced warning, I am making some changes to the server to see if that helps.

Its over for this month - if budget allows and I can get some more funding I can take it up to 600GB a month, but I need about $100-200 a month for power, backups, etc. So depending on what people can donate in, it can be doubled and hopefully take on a month-to-month basis without downtime.

If anyone is interesting in pitching in on bandwidth costs that would be greatly appriciated and if enough comes in I will setup a new server, get the backups lined up and such and get things online thus doubling bandwidth, but I can't afford to do it as is without some money backing it. By all means don't hesitate to donate to Nicholas - he does take a major part of his time to encode videos.

If anyone wants to help me out via PayPal toss some funds to: mrb@happypalm.com

If needs be I can accept donations via Credit Card as well, but PayPal's rates are lower. So any assistance is great not REQUIRED but would indeed help me get a server just for videos so im not lagging out other customers :)

If no donations we stay as is so no worries, but HappyPalm will still only provide 300GB for the time being - if funds increase on a steady monthly basis I'd be more than happy to move the files and make it 600GB a month. So thats where it stands.

I strongly suggest everyone think about what Chuck Brown said about the possibility of doubling the bandwidth.

If that were the case, just imagine all the more videos that could be downloaded.

Take a look at the attached screenshot and all those videos that would have been ready to upload for tomorrow and all your viewing pleasure!!

That is in addition to the videos coming this week like the next Foreever Eden and a few more!!

Sorry for the delay - thank you to Nicholas for the generous donation. This is enough for maybe 1 month of double bandwidth - but unless a mildly steady flow of donations come in the bandwidth will go back to 300GB a month, possibly lower because I'd have to populate the server with clients to make up for the loss of capital.

Getting the final things squared away to get the server by next monday - then we will get the videos and URL moved over as well as the IP filtering and such to limit connections etc. So probably be online just in time for next month.

Though I am new to the Clie scene, I have been ripping and converting DVD's into Divx files for some time and so am quite familiar with the workings of file conversions. That said, could someone tell me how to get movies down to the size and quality for good play on a Clie? The faster I become proficient, the quicker I can start putting up some converted movies of my own for others to enjoy. Thanks!

Shooting to have things ready and online first of the month as usual, however with double the bandwidth to hopefully allow you all to enjoy downloads througout the month.

Watch here - either myself or Nicholas will post when the stuff is back online - about 2GB of movies to move to another server and getting security in place. If I can get it up sooner I will - a few other donation offers have come in to help keep bandwidth increased - so time will tell how long 600GB stays in place.

New Donations Page:

http://www.happypalm.com/archives/000203.php

Running tally will be kept of donations recieved each month - now two options, credit card or PayPal. All donations are appriciated and help to keep the bandwidth up and if huge responce - possibly multipul servers in time to balance out the load a bit more.

New server is online and getting locked down and setup as I type ( I have 4 hands sometimes ) ;)

Starting April 1 there will be double the normal bandwidth, however this will only continue as long as donations come in to keep it that way - if not it will droop back down to 300GB - and if people continue to leech it may go lower.

As soon as its up and ready (still have to transfer 2GB of videos over) I'll let you guys know.

Naturally, I would seek his approval and wish to give credit where it is due. I simply made my offer out of sympathy for bandwidth constraints.

It would be nice if we could get a Usenet group going for things like this. It would allow far more space, open it up to more people's posts, and allow for regular updates.

I would not have a problem with this.

Which ones were you thinking of downloading and posting?

I am actually also working with another person about setting up another concurrent server where some of the videos could also be posted. Overall, things are looking promising.

On a side note, I have over 30 videos sitting on my HD right now ready for uploading!! :)

Working on the final HTML coding right now and will post them on April 1st.

I am really not interested in the USENET thing since I am not going to go to the trouble of breaking up 75+MB into hundreds of smaller files to be posted to a newsgroup.

That is too much work for me.

I completely understand your positiong, but you wouldn't have to break up the files for posting. Almost all news readers now automatically do it for you. Xnews is still freeware and has had this ability for years. Just FYI.

Just a heads up - over the next few days do NOT goto the downloads URL's it will only further DNS caching on some hosts - and possibly on Windows based machines.

On the first if your still getting the old IP and a dead links - windows users can try this trick:

ipconfig /flushdns

Use this from Run, but make sure all browser windows are closed - sometimes a reboot helps as well for cached IP's.

New setup is almost locked down - files are moving over the final bit this evening. This month will be 600GB - next month will go back to 300GB if no further donations come in - so consider donating.

Also the same restrictions are in place to prevent massive downloading and such - so please respect the bandwidth and setup one video downloading at a time. I'll post when they are up.

I've got some very bad news everyone.

I have been discussing with Chuck and we both agree that due to legal and technical problems, that the server is going to be shut down permanently effective 12 midnight tonight, Sat. Apr. 03. Not sure exactly which time zone, and since I am sure he is in the US, shoot for anytime from 9p-12a tonight.

I know this sucks, but there are signs of imminent legal trouble that cannot be ignored. Also, it has become basically impossible for me to upload any new videos. I don't know why; I suspect my ISP has capped upload bandwidth severely which makes it realistically impossible for me to upload any new videos.

This has been a great thing while it lasted, but as mentioned earlier; all good things must come to an end.

Well just a forewarning - I dont say this to try and STOP people from doing this, but be careful. Major broadband ISP's are putting a halt to this type of thing. People have noted that file names are being tracked as they download/upload and many people have gotten written legal "cease and desist" notices.

Maybe at a later date something like this can come back in some shape or form - but as for now just becareful what you download because it appears for once big brother truly is watching.

bragle
04-03-2004, 10:59 PM
Once again, I would point to Usenet as a viable alternative for this sort of thing.

alt.binaries.warez.palm is one such group which would be more than amenable to these types of files and there is no way they can be tracked or logged by those we wouldn't want to.

Aside from that, there is also the IRC networks, but those folks are a bit weird (no offense intended).

mr_b
04-04-2004, 01:48 AM
Well I think with especially Comcast (Nicholas's provider) and others getting on the anti-piracy bandwagon to avoid suits your going to see more and more stuff like this happen - and since most ISP's carry a copy of Usenets feeds at last check it'd probably be wiped a lot quicker now.

I dunno - just my personal viewpoints of the internet industry lately, so many sue happy people most people are cracking down to avoid issues of copyright etc.

before movies and other publicly presented works, they mention that you CAN reproduce/replay the media but once you start making a profit for it, then it's illegal. as far as i see it, it's just like having a house party and you take out your dvd's and y'all watch a movie. the media is shared to people that don't own it, but it is perfectly legal and harmless.

mr_b
04-04-2004, 04:34 AM

What Nicolas provided for us was not 'warez' as you say....anymore than that episode of 'The West Wing' you taped and let your friend watch is 'Warez'. He never charged for his service.

Were these episodes NCoday provided 'Cracked' in any way?

Were they reverse engineered in any way to avoid a reg key,or password?

I agree with winexprt:

The TV programs are broadcast for free over the TV waves. Nicoday is digitally taping the shows then providing digital copies of these shows for us to view. Isn't this what the TV producers want us to do?? Watch their show? I don't remember ever being asked to pay a fee to watch "everybody loves raymond" or "fear factor" on TV. Even if you don't pay for cable TV, many TV shows are broadcast for free.

This isn't like music or software, in that these are products that must be bought. TV, like radio is free.

Can I digitally copy and distribute for free taped radio programs? Such as the Howard Stern Show, or Rush Limbaugh, or Laura Schlesinger (as examples)??? Is this piracy??

I am very confused as to what is and isn't legal??? I always figured if you had to buy it, then you shouldn't be copying it and handing it out. Otherwise... if it's free.. then it doesn't matter, it's free advertising.

Actually, Cable TV is not braodcast for free over the air waves, you have to pay a fee to the cable company which in turn pays a licensing fee tot he networks and so on.

Also, radio is not free. You pay taxes which fund the FCC and they govern and control the radio waves which are licensed to the stations which have to pay licensing fees; but not leasing fees.

The only TV shows I could legally copy and sell for free would be those that I could get with a pair of rabbit ears, thats all!

If the videos in question were so unquestionably legal, why are they now gone? What legal threat existed except from those companies representing the copyrights?

Warez encompasses many sub-categories, moviez being one of them. Such file sharing was the subject of a recent discussion by both the outgoing president of the MPAA and the ongoing assertion that the movie industry is facing a "Napsterization". People who engage in file-sharing of this nature need to stay educated about such things.

Yes, making videos available for download is piracy, "warez", and illegal. If you don't believe me, just try taking it to court (at least in the US).

Let there be no doubt that I downloaded everything I could before those videos were taken down. I'll do the same again should the opportunity present itself. I do it all the time with applications and the only real money I have spent on my Clie was for the unit itself yet I have any application that I could want for it.

Such is the nature of warez and such is what those movies constituted and no amount of justification or rationalizing makes it go away.

Surfdog
04-06-2004, 06:51 AM
Another question is it illegal to convert taped tv shows to another format(clie) for "personal use". It must not be otherwise vcr's and dvd recorders would never have been legalized.

04-06-2004, 07:12 AM
If you live in the US, the Digital Millenium Copyright Act makes it illegal for you to bypass any type of encryption method on media which prevents copying. This would include DVD's, certain types of new audio CD's, and recordings made with devices like TiVo.

That's the catch here. It's not illegal to make a single duplicate of something for your private use (according to copyright laws) but it is illegal to bypass the anti-copying measures present on the thing you want to copy.

With laws like these and the intrusion into my personal life that they represent, is it any wonder why so many of us don't see a problem utilizing the warez and moviez sources that we are discussing?

But, I digress...

If you want further information on how to copy and covert most types of video to a format playable on your Clie, just search some of these forums or PM me and I will do what I can to help.

ncoday: Maybe you can push 300GB with your own video conversion / Clié pages... :D

My own tutorial is currently pushing about 2-3GB a month, and it is only 1.5MB in size. Apparently a link from Clien.net or something brought _thousands_ of Clié enthusiasts to download my tutorial, and I'm still getting at least 10 hits a day... About 100 dls already this month alone!

So, although your great video pages are now gone, I wish you luck with this new heading. May you have as great number of hits with this page as you did with your videos. And after seeing your picture, you look completely different from how I imagined you. :p

I remmebred hearing about your tutorial, but had forgotten about it.

The tutorial I am planning is more on video capture and then processing. Do you mind if I link to your PDF for more in depth information?

Sure, feel free to link to it. Another 1,000 people downloading it can't hurt :)

FYI, I'm slowly working on a Version 2.0 which might be finished near the summer. Basically it will cover the same stuff, but I'll include more examples and try to address some video conversion myths.

Hows everyone doing?

Thought I might resurrect this thread.

One problem, I keep having difficulty uploading any file over 3MB. Could some people help me with this dilemma?

Any site that I try to upload large files to, gives me lots of problems. I wonder if it has to do with my ISP/

I would say contact your ISP. I had somilar problems with my cable modem just last week, and roadrunner finally came out and replaced the modem. Problem fixed (though now I have other problems with it :( )
