I have a Sony Clie nx70v with Palm OS 5 and have Cingular as my phone service. In learning how to get my clie connected to the internet and to get email outside the office, I stumbled on the thread ClieSource > Forums > Clie NX-series > E-mail w/ Verizon Mobile Office Kit. Using that info as a jumpstart and after a misguided initial search, due to 3:00 am web searching, I learned that Cingular has a plan called Data Connect to enable me to connect a Cingular Wireless data capable phone to my clie. . ."an extension of Wireless Internet and Wireless Internet Express, Data Connect enables you to browse the Internet, access corporate information, manage e-mail. . ." I initally thought all I needed was Wireless Internet service, but that is just for phone searching. With Data Connect, my Cingular Wireless phone becomes a wireless modem and I would use Cingular Wireless as my Internet Service Provider (ISP), according to their site. Not sure if I have the option to use another ISP.

Here is the problem and question for you all:

Based on the "minimum system requirements", I am not sure if Palm OS5 is compatible. The web site states:

"Minimum Requirements:
PDA with:
Windows CE 3.0, Pocket PC 2000 and later
Intel StrongARM 32-bit processor
Compatible data/phone cable
OR
Palm OS Versions 3.3 - 4.0"

I was on the phone for 48 minutes today with Cingular and they kept wanting to transfer me to the "blackberry people." When I know more about this subject than someone else, I know I am in trouble. Finally, "Joe" in the "Other than Blackberry" tech dept. told me that Cingular's Data Connect is NOT compatible with OS 5; however, he said he would go check for sure and call me back. I may wait forever for that call. Anyone here use Data Connect with the OS 5 version of Palm?????

If OS 5 is compatible...................................................and I know 4.0 and some other earlier versions are.... .............................. I learned the following:

To get set up, I would:

1) Subscribe to Wireless Internet (Wireless Internet Express is not available in Missouri).

2) Purchase a Cingular Wireless Data Connect Mobile Office Kit "available in IrDA, Serial, and USB configurations so you can select the appropriate connectivity option for your laptop or PDA." Don't know yet which one I will need for my clie. The Data Connect Kit with Quick Link Mobile software is $19.99. The Data Connect Kit with software.... and data cable is $59.99.

3) Buy a phone that will work with Data Connect.

4) Establish a "My Wireless Window" Cingular ID and password which will enable me to log into "My Wireless Window"(if I wanted to) once I connect to the Internet. I guess this is optional if I don't want the restricted window. . .still unclear on this though.

5) Load the Data Connect software on my clie and run the QuickLink Mobile Setup Wizard and follow the prompts to configure my clie. Once I complete the installation, I connect my phone to my clie, click on the "Cingular Quick Link Mobile" icon to connect to the Internet.

Does anyone here use Data Connect and Palm OS v.5.0? By the way, based on the horrible customer service and their complete lack of familiarity with this product, I am strongly considering not to using Cingular.

shelly, I'm using "data connect" w/cingular in southern california w/o any problems... I posted a link for a pdf file with all of cingular's wap / wireless internet / data connect settings... if you missed it, here it is again:

http://home.pacbell.net/lagunzad/docs/Cingular_Device_and_Software_Settings.pdf

didn't have to purchase a "data connection" type kit or anything like that. as long as you have a compatible PHONE and set up the pda correctly, it'll work (set-up is mostly on the pda, NOT the phone). I've tried it on a tungsten t and the ux50 I'm using now. now the "my wireless window" thing, as far as I know is just a portal that mimics the full blown "my wireless window" page that you can view on your desktop. just a customizable homepage is all I really see that feature being... think the most convenient way to connect to your pda would be through bluetooth. I use a t68i which they don't sell anymore, but are probably still available elsewhere, but the the T616, which is the t68i's replacement I've read works... let me know if you need any more help setting it up, but really, like you said activating the right SERVICE (think they were calling it data connect w/isp.cingular at the time), was the biggest pain. the settings in the above document did the trick for the rest.

I had an S40 and NEVER figured how to do this.
THEN it died =/
REALIZED I loved the phone but it sucked *it was NOT FULLY compatibility with Cingular: AND when I contacted about the Data Connect, NOPE, sorry no can do.*

BUT USE the right settings and NOW it works with my T39.
WAP on the T39
AND now I can use IrDA to surf the net.
I am looking for a BT MS *My bro surfed the NET from my T39 with his 17 AlPb *we where both impressed*

See these settings below:

I do not have GPRS *not cheap on Cingular* but a My Wireless Window account and on my account WAP access is free *but I think it is $3.99 otherwise* BUT on your NX Create a CONNECTION
Modem
Infrared

Then under Network:
Create NEW
User name: Use the above info
Password: use the above info
Phone#: Use above info

I think for GPRS it is *99#

If you can use the Cingular settings, ideally you should be able to dial into any ISP.

Hope this helps.

I am currently using a Cingular GPRS data plan over Bluetooth or IR to my NX80v (Palm OS 5.0) through my Sony Ericsson T616. Use the application CoMa (Connection Manager) from 79bmedia to set it up correctly. In my findings, you need to set "CID" to profile 4. Yes, it costs money, but it's worth it. Check it out:

I can't get GPRS in Missouri. Will connection manager work with the regular Wireless Internet plan cingular has?

again, I can't speak about the "connection manager," but os5 (tungsten t and ux50) have worked for me for "wireless internet," cingular's csd data plan. it's slow but pretty reliable. I think it tops out around 9600 bps. "wireless internet express," which is their GPRS connection works too. as a matter of fact, the only type of internet stuff I CAN'T seem to do is a vpn over a cingular GPRS connection. tried it on a pocketpc and with a palm / clie, and both work over the "wireless internet" csd connection, but not the "wireless internet express" gprs connection. everything else: email, web, remote control, etc work great on either!!

Mfunkenbusch, I have an NX 70. Forget the confusion over data
connect instructions. Is your phone Internet ready and what type is it?
If you connect using a data cable from http://www.thesupplynet.com, they'll supply instructions for your phone and cellular company. If where you live allows web surfing on the phone through Cingular, then you'll be able to connect to data cable and surf through your PDA.
