This is a bit of a hint that if you EVER have weird problems with your NX70 (PDA), then do a Soft Reset... because it seems to be pretty effective at fixing ****. My problem is solved now, but for the sake of the community, I'll post what I had written anyway.

Here is my post, describing my woes, prior to doing a Soft reset.
---
I noticed some strangeness tonight when I went to use my cam.

I opened the Camera application, and flipped the lens around to the subject I wanted a picture of, but the screen stayed gray/black.

I figured because it was so cold (like -20 degrees) out, perhaps it was affecting the unit, so I clipped it back on my belt and walked home.

I can confirm that the camera lens works fine now, because I played with the Movie recorder app, and it works without any problems.

Satisfied that is was not a hardware issue, I played with the camera software. I had not changed any of the settings recently.

Save to: Priority MS
Size 640x480
File Numbering: Series
(other crap...)

I have tried to change the Save to: to the internal memory, but it makes no difference.

The only things I might have done were to download some pics from my website, and then I think I deleted some files that were floating around - though unfortunately I do not recall what or where. I realize that helps a lot. :-)

I have deleted everything now, the /DCIM directory just in case it was like permissions or something. Taking a new pic restores that directory and appropriate subdirs. My 3 most recent image previews at the bottom of the window show MemoryStick icons and then above them, a little gray square with a gray question-mark in the lower right corner. As soon as I take a picture, the left-most preview icon, changes to a solid darker gray square (basically what I see in the camera window - nothing) and the memory stick icon changes to a dark gray colour with a red line through it.

I have confirmed that my Memory Stick is fully inserted (I never remove it)... and I just pulled it out and put it back in. No changes.

If I take another picture now and look in /DCIM/101MSDCF/ I see two files

DSC00243.JPG and DSC00244.JPG - both 0 bytes.

I also confirmed that my MemoryStick is not locked.
The Clie Camera manual is basically useless if you have any problems which is why I am turning to you guys, because I figure someone here probably knows more about it than I do.

Why would the application be unable to show me what is sees via the lens? I would have thought even if I could not save the pics to MS for some reason, that the camera would at least pass-thru the image so I could see what I otherwise could have taken a picture of?
And what things would cause the application to be saving 0-byte files? My battery level is max and my 64MB memory stick is half-empty. Does that dark-gray memory stick with the orange line in it mean something specific?

Ack! Please help. :-)

If we cannot resolve this, what are my alternatives?
1) reformat/install the unit/software (hard reset?)
2) sit on the phone for 2h to Sony support only to have 2nd level support tell me to do #1? (I had a friend go through something similar with his new WiFi card...)

Cheers,
Bassil

At this point I tried the Soft Reset and boom, it all works again.
I have NO IDEA why this was going on... totally bizarre.
Very glad I wasted an hour screwing around trying to figure things out... next time "Soft Reset" right away! All these years as a UNIX sysadmin... teaches you to try everything else before rebooting. Now if I was a Windows admin, I would have tried that first. ;-)
