View Full Version : Clie and mobile phone
I've been trying for weeks to get T-mobile to help me set up my phone to work with my Clie via infra-red. I've realised that it's so much hassle that it's not worth bothering with. Is using a cable instead of IR absolutely hassle-free, or does that require tricky configuration too?

Are you wanting to tranfer phone #'s or are you wanting an internet connection. I wasn't aware that you could even have an internet connection via infrared.
Internet connection and e-mail are both theoretically possible but they make it so difficult it's only really for experts as far as I can see.

Dude, it's pretty easy.
1. Goto System ---> Prefs
2. Network
3. Have it at these settings:
Service: Earthlink (or whatever ISP)
Username: your login
Password: your password
On Connection, have it at these settings:
Connect to: MODEM
Via: Infrared (if you have BT, maybe you can select BT. I dunno)
Dialing: Touchtone
Volume: Low
Phone: whatever phone number your ISP is.
5. On Details:
Connection Type: PPP
Idle timeout: Never
Query DNS: Checked
IP Address: Automatic
6. Hit OK afterwards, have everything within range and tap connect and you should be set!

You should also think about acquiring a Bluetooth MS. The connections are much better. Have a look at the thread below for help with connection problems.

Could I try this one again, please? Does anyone have experience of using a cable to connect to a mobile? I'm interested to know whether it's plug and play, or whether there's tricky configuration involved that is going to defeat me....

I have verizon wireless and bought a cable to connect to the PDA. The configuration was a little tricky, but finally figured it out (in a few hours). It works great, but the speed is 14.4. Again, I can only speak for verizon... I don't know what speed T mobile offers, or even if the configuration is the same. This is how I configured my LG VX100 phone with my NX80:
On PDA:
1. Select "Connection" under Preference menu.
2. Select "New..."
3. Name: Verizon
4: Connect to: PC
5. Via: Cradle/Cable
6. Select "Details"
7. Speed: 115,200
8. Flow Ctl: Automatic
9. Select "OK", then "OK".
10. Select "Network" under Preference menu.
11. Service: Verizon
12. User Name: qnc
13. Password: qnc
14. Connection: Verizon
15. Select "Connect".
I hope this helps, but someone with T mobile will probably be more helpful :)

You can search the NX forum with criteria "Tmobile AND NX70" (advanced search without the quotes) and get a whole series of posts. The one that worked for me was a post by bass4ever on August 8, 2003. I've had consistent connections following that. There are variations that have worked for others within the posts shown if you do the search. I'm using a Nokia 6610 and an NX60.
Hope that helps some if you're still interested in playing with IR.

honestly, i use a cable with a cell and it works just fine. easy to set up because all you have to do is configure the network settings and whatever service u use will have that info on your registration page.
only problem is speed...i connect at 14.4k so its good for email and minimum browsing

jwsp, none of the systems are plug and play, because you have to select the setting on your PDA.
Both my husband and I use data cables, have NX70s and use Verizon. However, the connection speeds are different, because we have different phones. Once you get the correct settings, it works perfectly and I've never had a problem.
However, I'm curious about the IR connect if I won't need to carry the cable any longer.

soulreaver99,
1) Are you still using your cell phone as the modem?
2) Do you have to pay usage time on your cell phone?
3) If you're not using cell phone, is there an internal modem or did you purchase one for your Clie?
4) If your cell isn't the modem, are you paying connection fee or service fee to anyone other than your home ISP provider?
Thanks, Bev.

depends if your cell has true ir capabilities. mine from motorola has a port but only for syncing with the pc. however, previous phones have a true ir port and the connection is fine.
the only problem i noted was that with ir connections, you can go out of range easily, thereby losing the connection. this does not happen with cable.
bluetooth is the best option and will take place if and when i change phones

I was just thinking about setting up my MX73 to talk to my T68 phone by Bluetooth and checked the forum - after reading soulreaver99's advice above it took a mere 5 minutes to get working. Many thanks!

for Ricked..This is exactly what I was looking for. My only remaining question is where did you get the cable to connect the phone to the CLIE? And did you have to buy the Verizon Wireless "Mobile Office Kit"?? Thanks for the great info.

zx7dave, you go
http://thesupplynet.com
You don't have to get the Verizon Mobile office kit to use it, but you do have to sign up for Internet service on your phone. For verizon it's about $4 per month.

zx7dave: that's where I got my cable (thesupplynet.com). Actually, I didn't have to subscribe to the service... once everything was configured it worked great. I don't think the service costs anything, but it may be area-dependent (I live in Baltimore). And I'll echo bdhu2001's response - you don't have to buy the Mobil Office Kit for it to work.

I tried connecting with the cable from supply net and it does NOT work with my Sony Clie NX80. Did anyone else find a way to get it to work?

You can download instructions from SupplyNet for just about every phone/device/provider. I have been using a SupplyNet cable w/Verizon Wireless service for years. Works as advertised (14.4K), adequate for email and after 9 PM and weekends, I occasionally surf the net. It's slow, but if you're in a hotel room, watching TV and it's "free time," slow is OK! ;) Never paid anything beyond my minutes plan to use the service. Your connect time is just like a call: if it's prime time, you're eatin' minutes off your plan; if it's "nights & weekends," it's free! ;)

Hi,
Not an specific answer to your questions, but just my $0.02
1.
In front of the PC, I use the Softick PPP to NAT my connection, and just connect via the cradle.
The PC uses wireless for most of the time, and sometimes dialup, but It wouldn't matter, since softick will handle connections to your clie.
2.
When travelling, I use a Motorolla Travel Modem, which connects via Irda to the clie at 115200 and to the provider at upto 56k. I use this when I travel outsite Kathmandu, and at times when the lights are gone, and I need to SSH or just do something quick. Motorolla Travel Modem uses regular two 1.5v batteries. Portscanner, pTelnet, TuSSH, winVNC, eZFTP all run from the MS and Netfront runs from the flash, so I am quiet loaded :) . I wish if someone makes gaim or trillain for the pda one day :D
3.
just for test, I used my nokia 6210 as a modem and was able to go upto 9.6 via infra connection.
But it works :)
Cheers,

I was told by Audiovox today that the CDM-8900 and the Clie NX80V are not compatible. The cable I purchased from SupplyNet does not work with my PDA. Any ideas anyone? The mobile office kit works fine with my computer.
Thank you,

O.k. I got the updated Mobile Office kit from Verizon, but I am told that I must remove and reinstall Vindigo and AvantGo. Anyone know how to do this?
Thanks

I use a Gomadic cable (IR was too flakey) and previously posted rather detailed instructions on using Clie NX70V + Siemens S46 + AT&T GPRS + Eudora 2.1 + Earthlink at
http://www.1src.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50549
It might be of some help.
