View Full Version : Upgrade NX-70?

I've had my NX-70V/U for almost a year now. It's been through some tough times, the swivel is loose and the screen slightly damaged (don't ask  ). I am looking enviously at all those new models but cannot justify buying a new model. So I'm wondering can I upgrade my NX-70 to the NX-73/80? Is it worth it?
Fixing the swivel shouldn't be too much of a job, but the screen would be expensive I suppose, and then there's the upgrade itself. And... my NX70 has a somewhat chequered past. It was a grey import into Hong Kong and I'm now in the UK, so warranty support is out of the question.
I've thought about saving up for the UX, but they don't support CF and I've no plans to put further money in Sony's hands by buying expensive MS PROs. Ever since Eruware developed the CF driver I've become a CF convert.

i think you should hold on to your clie and your wallet for another 1-2 months........... OS6 will be coming out soon and if you buy a OS5 device you're gonna regret it soon.....
but that's just my prediciton......

I agree. What I'd DIE to see?
Os6
Clamshell
CF
400mHz
32+ usable ram
Bt
Nx80 camera
Other than that no changes fomr the nx70v.
Anyone else?

If you' ve had your NX for a year - as I have - then you'll remember the painful lack of applications that were supported on OS5 when the NX came out. I can only imagine the same situation when OS6 comes out, especially on a CLIE cuz I just can't believe that Sony will be a forerunner in the backwards-compatibility race.
I've been looking longingly at an upgrade too (I'm an NX60 owner since Nov 2002), but am considering the NX80 or the UX50 (if I could convince myslef that it was attractive). The UX prices just dropped at Best Buy here in the US - it's either due to the coming holiday shopping season or because there is a new model coming out (or they're competing w/ the T|T3).
My opinion is that you're better off upgrading to another NX model (based on your CF preferences) and waiting for the OS6 devices and apps to make an appearance. Of course, as soon as they're out the prices of all the NX models will drop and you'll cringe, but that's the game...

It would help me decide what to do if Sony (or anyone else) released their roll out plans. If I knew there was a Palm OS6 version of the NX series coming out then I'd start saving now.
Following on from PDASROCK, I'd like to see the next NX have:
OS6
CF (with drivers for a multitude of CF devices)
Integrated Bluetooth
Integrated Wireless
Clamshell
As much RAM as possible (64M would be nice)
NX80 camera
Generic support for MPEG4/DiVX, so we don't have to go through x number of conversions to put video on the device
Processor - the same or better (my ToDo list is not pushing the device that hard ;-)
USB2x - the new version due out that doesn't require a PC in the chain (OK, so this isn't realistic)
I don't use the keyboard on mine but the clamshell provides good protection for the screen (in my experience).

I woudl stick with the NX70 (in fact I only bought one ;) ) it is enough for almost everything and being behind the innovation wave gives you much cheaper prices with minor performance losses ;)

OS 6 will be ARM as well right? So there should be basically 100% compatibility. Unless the multitasking interferes with it.
Halesy:Yeah, I forgot UNIVERSAL(hear that sony?) cf support. So we can use anything we want in there. AND I would hate to see them NOT change the video recording resolution. If they include a 1.3mp camera, then is should record at least 600x800.
Egalus: Haha, yeah. But we're all nerds, geeks and computer freaks. We'd sell our mothers to get the newest or best clie :D

I tend to agree with "addict." I changed my mind about six weeks ago (was planning to hold out until OS6 devices came out) and bought the NX80V. I think it will be about a year from now before OS6 emerges from "bleeding edge!" There's a scramble on right now to spit out the first OS6 devices. Then everyone will let the manufacturers (those who listen  ) know what they liked and didn't like, and then the next wave will come out with those ideas and bug fixes. Meanwhile, software developers will slowly adapt their current offerings to take full advantage and comply with OS6. That's not going to happen overnight, as addict reminded us of how long it took (or is still taking) for OS5.
Example: I had to buy another security locking application as BackupBuddy VFS still says on their website they will be coming out with an OS5 compatible product soon! So I had to ante up again with TealLock to replace it.
Thinking about this awhile led me to go ahead now and get the NX80V and in about a year I'll assess the whole OS6 environment (hardware and software) and decide when the time is right for that new OS6 device!
Some people just can't stand it unless they are "bleeding edge" enabled. That's OK. I understand that. But it does come with pros and cons, a certain amount of built-in frustration as well as some satisfaction. To each his own! ;)
P.S. Love the NX80V. No regrets!

wellsjs, can you briefly articulate the advantages you feel you have obtained by upgrading to the NX80? As I said, I'm thinking of doing it myself.
Thx.

Yea, I woke up one morning with the "gotta have a new Clie urge!" It's a powerful thing! :D
addict,
I previously had a T665 (still got it actually), so for me the 320x480 screen was top of the list. Then OS5 and a faster processor. When I learned you could get 15M of usable Flash ROM with JackFlash (which I already owned), that put me over the edge.
OK, the NX80V's screen is a little insensitive compared to other models, but it's also MUCH more scratch resistant and the display is gorgeous. It does not wash out at all in flourescent lighting (the T665C was terrible), as is quite usable in sunlight (though not perfect).
Then there's BATTERY LIFE! It is awesome. I can use it all day long all I want and have never taken the battery below 70%! Even surfing the net for a couple of hours using my WL110 wi-fi card!
The camera is decent . . . I would say usable vs. the NX70's being not good for much. It's handy, but not a big deal for me. I use it occasionally.
Voice recorder works great. I don't use it and I really should. (make note to self . . . start using voice recorder!) :D
Ability to use the MS PRO (Just recently got a 256). It's fast and works great.
Before I got it, I would have said I wasn't a fan of the clamshell/swivel screen, but now that I've had it a while, I love it. This device really is a beauty. Those who complain about this and that are welcome to their views, but I'm completely satisfied with it. ;)

i juz recently bought a new nx70 and its goin great. halesy i understand u have some hardware problems, perhaps if you have a warranty, then the upgrade(if possible) to the nx80 is certainly worth it.
the only regret i have is the cam, im so into the nz cam, despite is loading time, battery, etc. Now the prices are low enough that i could afford it. Rats, if only i had waited.

Shame I don't have the warranty, as I mentioned it was a gray import to Hong Kong and I'm now in the UK - complicated. Maybe I'll give them a call and see what they say, it would be good to get back to full working order. Could I live without it though while I wait???

I have the NX70 and I'm so tempted to get the 80. I've been holding back, because I know the new models will be out w/in months. However, the statement about the software and drives for OS6 does give me pause. We had to wait forever to use a keyboard again and could only sync Avantgo as a beta tester, Hmm.
Is anyone concerned that the new models might be like the UX and no longer have the CF slot?
