View Full Version : Newbie queston: Get rid of Graffiti pad?

Sorry, I'm a stupid Newbie. I LOVE the Clie, although it was a long, hard road getting here from Newton.
My question is simple: How do I turn off (and on again when wanted) the graffiti window? I want it GONE. Full screen for my apps (I realize some won't run full screen)
I want to be able to write anywhere on the Clie with Graffiti, but want to turn off that darned window when I don't want it. Like a Newton...
HELP? PLEASE?
Other questions, if you are feeling generous:
Anyone use their Clie in Landscape Mode? (again, like a Newton) HOW??
Any former Newton users out there who've already been down this road and can save me a million hours of research? Tips? Tricks?
Thanks in advance!!

if you want to write anywhere on the screen---get a program (which is free :-) ) called "Newpen"
Not familiar with the Newton but....
You are right. the application must support HiRes+ in order to make the Graffiti pad dissapear.
If the app does support HiRes+ then to Expand and Minimize Graffiti press the small arrow in the lower right hand corner of the screen.
To have Graffiti anywhere on the screen get NEWPEN at palmgear.com
I have not encountered any landscape applications other than picture viewers such as AcidImage.
hope this helps.

I have tried Newpen. It works okay, still experimenting. Not worthwhile unless I can get rid of the graffiti window. (but thank you!)
I think I understand better now; there IS no way to turn off the Graffiti pad. The app running either provides the option or not.
So, what I need to do is find apps that run full screen (probably impossible?) that do memos, outlines, mail, and calendar.
There are references to running in landscape mode on Clie devices out there, but I just haven't put it all together.
Thanks again, and appreciate this and further input!!

i too am interested in any apps that use the hires+ format, like the newton in landscape mode.
my newton died recently (my fault) and i looked to the nx to provide a similar kind of pda (although much smaller and better color!)
is there is a list of the programs that support the hires+?
thanks in advance for any replies.
nice quote, by the way, i first read enders game on my newton.

Thanks! Re-reading Ender's Game for the 50th time right now, and it seemed appropriate...
I have owned and used a Newton exclusively for 9+ years (since the day they came out), so this conversion is hard for me. My MP2100 screen alignment is dying for the second, time, so I thought now was the time. I LOVE the Clie formfactor, and like the Palm OS (very Newton-like, which is appropriate, since the founders came from Apple). But, Graffiti, well, I won't start any flame wars. I'm a Palm user now, for better or for worse. I'm doing my best with Graffiti
Best list for hi-res apps so far (26 hour Clie user and counting) that I have found is:

Any other former Newton users out there? Got any hints????
Stay in touch!

thanks for the quick reply, that list is greatly appreciated.
about graffiti, i hear palmsource is going to get rid of graffiti and use the jot-style recognized characters. it's still not as cool as the newton recognition (now found in inkwell) but maybe it's a step in the right direction. i'm not sure when they plan to implement jot, but it would make sense to put it on palm os6.
since you mentioned writing on the screen, do you know of a good screen protector? i want something that protects well, but minimizes distortion. (i guess that really goes without saying)
have you read any of the books in the ender series? there are 7 or 8 others, i believe. they are all excellent, but not as fun as enders game, which is still my favorite of them.
i must say the clié users are a prettygood bunch. thanks-again!

Basically...tap the bottom right button to minimise the graffiti area, this should work with all the default clie programs such as notepad and memo which allows u to write a memo on the screen without loading a special program. The video player supports landscape and for pics, try rotating them 90 before u load them, hope this helps :P

There are quite a few apps that run full screen now, including the ones you have mentioned. They are commonly refered to and comes in two classes, such as HiRes+(320x480 full screen) or plain HiRes(320x320 only). Low res is 160x160 DPI.
Landscape mode is basically limited to some doc and image viewers. Most would like to be able to switch to landscape mode at will, no matter what app is running.

I've been using a program called hrFontMapper with my Clie NR70. I don't know whether it supports the NX70 or not, but it allows me to force small fonts and collapsible graffiti in almost any program.
It does cause a few bugs in a few programs, but works for the most part. I use it for my Memo Pad, E-mail, etc.
