View Full Version : Help Upgrading from a One Clie to Another...

Well, I did it...I've purchased a brand new T665 to replace my T615! I decided I couldn't wait for the dream Clie (T-form factor, virtual graffiti, etc.) any longer - which means it will probably be announced next week!
Anyway, here is my question...How can I transfer all of the data from my old Clie to my NEW Clie?
According to the Operating Manual, I need to use a new name for my new T665, and then export the data from my T615. I guess that this would be OK, but won't that screw up most of my add-on apps? Most of them (like Palm Reader) are tied to the old name!
BUT according to the book, How to Do Everything with Your Clie, All I need to do is uninstall the old Palm Desktop, install the new Palm Desktop, and then hot sync my new Clie, and all will be transferred without having to change the name!
WHO IS CORRECT? Has anyone ever done this before? Any help would be MOST appreciated!
PS...I use Backup Buddy.

PS - And if there was a way to keep the SAME name on BOTH Clies I'd be REALLY happy...then I'd always have a back up...I realize that this is wishing for the moon, however!

Sacharissa,
I just did the same thing except I moved up from a 415 to a 615C. (what a difference!) Anyway, I simply synced the unit as if it was my 415. Palm Desktop asked which user I wanted to use, naturally I chose the only one. After Syncing alll of my 415 apps that I installed, my documents, ebooks, games, schedules etc were moved to my 615. To complicate matters, I sync both at home and at work. It worked fine on both computers.
Do a backup first especially if you have a memory stick (What Clie user doesn't?) and everything should go off without a hitch.
Best of luck.

OOPs, forgot you had a second post. I haven't had to deal with that situation, although a co-worker bought my 415 and syncs it on my computer at work but under a new user ID. I have seen some threads about hacks to rename your old clie. After doing so, you can still sync it with the same palm desktop but just under a different user. You should be able to keep all of your current apps.
OOPS, just found it. It's called "changename" and the last site that I had cataloged was www.mulliner.org/palm. Try that and see if it works.

Hi, did the same last week (T675C), only synced my new clie with the PC, using the same Username.
All worked perfect, only Omnireote didn't seem to like a new Processor ID, so I had to reinstall. All other Programs seem to work perfect.
A new Username would be a big problem with all programms that are not free, cause normally your Registration Key is based on the Hotsyncname.

Thyraz,
That's a good point. I didn't think of that.
Thanks,

Thanks for all the help! I will try the big hotsync tomorrow night...when I have time to back everything up first!
So one more day with my trusty Clie T615!

I migrated from a T615C to my T665C and recorded the process on my website. There are some gotchas, so the page is worth reading before proceeding. You can't necessarily just sync all your old RAM contents to the new device.

you can, but u have to use the tool "syncall" this sets the backup flag in every db and prog. I use this all the time, cause I dont need to make seperate Backups all the time. hotsync will be solwer on first run (cause of saving a lot new data to the backup Folder) but the backups will only be written a second time if the files change on PDA.
So normally it will take only a few seconds longer to hotsync, but with more safety

But you don't want to sync over T615C-specific files like system patches, system libraries, and older versions of the programs on the CD.

Heed what Tanker Bob says. He's right on.
I did something foolish when I upgraded from a N760 to a T665. I forgot to remove the N760 specific files and it messed up the operations with my T665. Did a hard reset and made sure the second time around that I removed those nasty N760 files from my old backup.

Thanks all! I took a look at Tanker Bob's Home Page, tinkered with the backup files as suggested, crossed my fingers and hotsynced to my new T665...and it worked almost flawlessly! The only thing that didn't work right was Avantgo...I'm going to need to reinstall...but other than that, everything else appeared to have transferred perfectly - right down to my Yishow background!
So now I guess I need to change my Avatar to the T665 - at least until I can choose my own! (Only 24 more posts!!!)

Outstanding! Glad you got a good transfer.
Avantgo is almost always a problem. Fortunately, reinstalling it is easy and fixes most problems. Be sure to use the copy off your T665C CD if you want the pictures to look reasonable. I pitched it for HandStory Suite because I wanted the data on my MS, not in RAM, and also wanted hi res support. I'm very happy I made the switch.
Welcome to the T665C world! I'm still loving mine after eight month of daily use.

Hehehe... I just used backup buddy for my switch for the T615 to the T665 .... Everything still works fine. I am debating the NX series, I am tired of waiting for an OS5 T Series.
