The table saw...the kickback king, I'm sure if you use one you'd know why. Today I was using the table saw in woodshop when the board suddenly shotup and hit the wall, narrowly avoiding my rightside pocket where my CLIE was located. The scary fact was that board kickback took chunks out of the concrete wall behind me. That was my first kickback on a table saw and it almost hit my CLIE.

Shouldn't you have been away from where the wood was going to kickback? That's the first thing I learned in woodshop

Clies can be replaced . . . you can't! Learn the dos and don'ts of woodshop power tools very carefully. They can kill you in a slit second. ;) Glad you're OK! :)

If you nearly get hit be a piece of wood at high velocity and are more worried about your clie, you might be a junkie :D

Glad you (and your toy) lived through it.

And as the others said, tut tut for not following safety protocols :)

Yup, if it took chucks off the concrete wall, imagine what it would have taken off ya ;)

Actually being away from the kickback area is good but the best method is to hold on tight to the peice. Better to stall the balade and ruin the blade than get a free Apendectomy (sp?). :)

Anywho,

Well lets just say this, at least both his clie and him are ok :)

You officially cost as much as your clie now.

No offense, but you can't stall the blade on the majority of tablesaws. Way too much torque... My DeWalt portable has given me a couple of good whacks over the years. Sometimes it pays to have a little padding in the stomach region!!!

I always use an anti-kickback design blade - it really helps. Freud has some good designs. I use anti-kick on my circular saw too.

I have a homemade push stick with a big chunk where it hit the saw blade. It always reminds me that the blade doesn't care what it cuts!

Thank God you're safe this time. BTW, I still have all 10 fingers!

Kinda hard to hold a stylus with a stump..... :-)

not only are the clie and him are ok, his children got a second chance at life.

anyways my teacher always tells us to use a push stick to hold one end and keep the wood flush against the wall with the other hand to prevent kickback

There's a company called SawStop LLC that makes their own line of table saws and other items. The saws have a built-in safety system (a constantly-monitored low-voltage current running through the blade) that stops and RETRACTS the blade in a fraction of a second if it senses a change in the current consistent with cutting your hand.

The demo video of the product is pretty amazing:
