View Full Version : Please Help = no way to switch b/t WiFi and Bluetooth without crashing!

My UX50 has been working well with both wifi and BT surfing (BT through my Siemens S55 Tmobile phone). Seemingly out of nowhere, now, whenever I try to access Prefs -> Network (to change from wifi to BT), my UX crashes. I get the following error message:
"NetworkPanel.c, Line:5167, Could not create new database.
You may need to restart the handheld by performing a soft reset. Please press the RESET button."
I get this error message whether I try to go through the Prefs app or whether I go through an app like Snappermail which can take you to the Network settings.
Any thoughts? I recently went through the Netfront update (to make it compatible with hotmail), which seems to be working. Is it possible that I accidently deleted or corrupted the Network db file? If so, would someone please email a clean one to me? anthonymoody@hotmail.com
Also, FWIW, the current network setting (which happens to be WiFi) is working fine too.
Please help!
Thanks in advance,
TM

U may try to look in the backup prefs, and check the list of modified files since your last backup ; this can work only if the backup ram doesn't have this problem...
I unfortunately can't send you any files as i got a jpn device :)

Is your memory full?

Hi GUys,
Thanks for the quick response. First, to c0mm0n, sorry to be dense, but how do I check the modified files since my last backup?
hausman,
the memory on my device is indeed running low, 1.1M free of 15.9M.
Hmmm.

try to free up some space, just to be sure it's not memory related but it may be, 1.1 is really low - try cleaning the browsers cache -
For the backup advanced mode :
- go to prefs/backup
- tap and hold from vg to center of the screen
- voila :)

And/or temporarily remove something (or use the AliasExt trick to put some stuff in internal memory?), maybe that'll help?

Well, I cleared the caches from both WebPro and Netfront, leaving me a total of 2.6M, and I got the same error message, so I'm assuming it's not memory space related.
As for checking the backup, in prefs I don't seem to have a backup choice (I have bluetooth, buttons, connection, date&time, digitizer, extension, formats, general, graffiti2, network, owner, phone, power saving, shortcuts).
I have a bad feeling about this!

Go to prefs, power saving, then draw a line with the stylus from the status bar somewhere toward the middle of the screen. This gets you advanced backup/restore functionality, and IIRC from another thread, will let you restore NetworkDB or whatever, one at a time rather than the whole thing?
Someone want to second me on this...

Very interesting! I did as you said, and up came the list. I restored the 'netprefs db' and now my network connections works again.
So, THANKYOU!
However, now my CodeDiver went back to being expired. I just realized that in addition to futzing with the Netfront update I also installed a paid version of codediver. Any reason that would corrupt my netprefs db?
Thanks,
TM

Mine worked...(codediver, that is)...are you using the beta version of codediver?
anthonymoody

I was using a beta version, which expired. Someone pointed me to a place (I think on handango) where I purchased a license. The d/l was a license prc which seemed to 'activate' it permanently.
Strange. The other version of Netfront I copied into RAM is gone from my launcher, but otherwise works as it used to (i.e. can't get to hotmail).
WebPro seems to work fine.
Strange,

Also, my McFile is gone too...just from restoring that 1 thing.

I wonder if "Restore" doesn't just restore what was selected, but everything?
anthonymoody

Possible. In fact, it seems so.
Also weird. I just reinstalled McFile, as well as the codediver license PRC, and that all seems fine. I just now used McFile to re-copy the new updated netfront into RAM and that seems to have worked fine. Am able to get to Hotmail with netfront again.
Anyway, all seems back to 'normal' again, so THANK YOU both so very much!
I guess it's worrisome that it just sort of stopped working (the original error)...who knows if it'll happen again?

Good question! That's why I try not to install too much *stuff*... :) you just never know what will happen. But I'm glad yours is working again!

Yeah I agree with you - I *try* not to get too carried away with unorthodox stuff. Sometimes I can't help myself though!
Anyway, thanks again for your help!

The restore is a complete one, u can't restore a single file, but the list is useful to know what ram system files have been changed and maybe can be fixed :)
Glad to hear everything is fine now :)

Now we know for certain. :) Tony, sorry you were a "guinea pig" of sorts...that detail may have been covered in the other thread...but at least your stuff is working now. And of course it's easy to reinstall software on the Palm.
The greater mystery is, of course, "what happened"...maybe we'll never know. My advice would be to keep some more free memory on your device. I don't know much about Palm OS, but it's possible something was using up much of the 1.1M you had (swap or something? install process?) and when it tried to write to the memory it wasn't able to write everything it needed, which may have left your network DB in a bad state.
Just the best guess I can come up with at the moment. Use the AliasExt trick, though, it seems to work well.

Thanks again. Just to confirm, the AliasExt trick simply means that we can store and run programs from the VMS (instead of RAM) by moving them from RAM into the AliasExt folder on the VMS? If there are more than 1 file associated with a program, you have to move all of them, yes? Also if so, you need to create a folder w/in aliasext for each programs associated files?
Thanks!

You'd better read the thread(s) on it...you've gone over my head. I moved some docs to go executables in there and they seem to work fine, so I'm not sure about supporting files and all that stuff. :)
Just remember, you have to soft reset before things will show up in the launcher.

Hey Tony:
It appears that I may be responding too late to provide any help. But it's never too late to provide insight..
As a rule, I try to never go below 3.5MB in available main memory. There are too many ways to facilitate this to not take advantage of this. Move most of your apps to a memstick and move a number of them to your secondary on-board memory card. Remember: your UX is a computer and it needs sufficient memory to "perform" even the most basic of tasks.
Additionally, I suggest you spend the $10 or $12 bucks it takes to buy Backupman, like I did. This is a great program and I have tried most of the others and frankly, none come close to this one. I haven't used the inherent Sony backup program since the first day when I was just playing with everything.
Once you have done this, you can do worry-free hard resets to set your UX back to factory settings, restore a backup and be up and running all within a matter of minutes.
Concerning having too many apps on your UX, IMHO, you can't have too many as long as you still have the operating headroom of 3.5 to 4MB in your main memory. Heck, I test hundreds of apps on mine, keep some, delete most but still have the comfort of knowing that if I do run into the oft-feared, self-induced catastrophic meltdown, I am prepared to fix it in minutes rather than hours.:)
I hope this help ya.:)

Thanks again all.
Smeggie,
I'm 'boning' up on moving apps to the VMS now. Also, I'll check out backupman for sure!
THanks,
