When I use my old TG50, the screen still looks good out door under the sun shine even with back light set off.
Now with my UX50, I can't see a dame thing under the sun shine no matter how bright i set the screen. Seems UX50 is unless in that situation.
I tried to put on a screen protector to reduce the glare, but I found out it even get worse.
Why sony didn't use the same TG50 screen on UX50?
Doesn anybody tried any way to incresing the viewbility of UX50 screen out door?

i agree. while walking to m&s yesterday, i thought i'd send a text message to a friend. so out went my trusty ux40. when i turned it on at first i thought that nothing came up on the screen but then i noticed that the power led was on, so i stared harder and realized that it was indeed on but that i could barely see anything on the screen. i thought at first that it was just because i set the brightness to low, but after setting it to max, i could still barely see anything. *sigh* i never had this problem with my t665 :( but then again, i couldn't send text via bluetooth on my t665 either :p so i guess you win some, and you lose some :)
I agree totally.
the UX's display is useless in outdoor situation especially under direct sun light.
This wasn't the case with my previous NX70, as you've mentioned with your TG50 as well, I can also turn off the backlight on NX70 to save energy. But with the UX is a NO NO. :p

Damn, and I was thinking of getting the UX-50. That's a thumbs down. Still looking....
Hmm.. someone on another thread said this about the UX "If I turn the screen on but the backlight off it still buzzes" this was referring to the noise thread.

Anyone tried with polarized sunglasses? :)
The UX 50 doesn't have a transreflective screen, which allows you to use ambient light to "light" the screen. Transreflectives use frontlights rather than backlights, which is why you can turn the light off in direct sunlight and the screen still looks great. I wonder if there wasn't room in the UX for a frontlight (maybe it's still easier to cram a backlight into a thin space?). It also requires the screen to be set "deeper". In the case of the UX you'd need to turn the backlight to max to have a remote chance of seeing anything on the screen in direct sunlight.
it is a drawback, but in the end I realized I don't use my PDA out in direct sunlight that much anyway. Of course, given the portability and feature set of the UX I might like to nowadays...but too much sun isn't good for people anyway. ;)

Yeah...the question I have is *why* didn't they use a transreflective screen? Does it compromise the ultimate display quality under ideal conditions? One of the selling points is display quality for movies, etc., so....

I'll be a dollar on thickness and/or availability of a 480x320 in transreflective. I think the screens are also darker, but that could be overcome with a strong frontlight (at the expense of battery life). LOL it's like a Rube Goldberg, only with product features rather than mechanical implements.

I can live with the compromise, so long as it's in the interest of battery life (which is nothing to write home about as it is) and form factor; although, I doubt we'd notice an increase in size to accomodate a battery twice the size of the current one, unless the next size up is unworkable? I don't think Sony manufactured the battery. I require backlight 96% of the time, anyway. One thing I don't like, however, is the very narrow 'sweet spot' when watching a video. The quality is very good, but you have to have it tilted precisely. Makes it harder to relax. Don't know what's going on with that.

i was walking down the street the other day, looking for hotspots during lunch. backlight or no backlight, if you view the ux with the Sun right behind you, shining directly on the screen, it looks great. looks as good as my m515 with the backlight off.
any angle besides direct sunlight is rather poor for viewing, i would agree.

I too was shocked when I tried to show someone my UX50 in the sunlight outside. My screen looked completely washed out and horrible!
My NX80 on the other hand had a screen that could be viewed outdoors easily. Thanks guys for pointing this flaw out to me! <sarcasm>!!!!
Oh well, like sonic said, I'm nocturnal too and mostly use the clie indoors anyways.

That's true. Can't see a thing under the sun...
Maybe it's help if you use ux50 as labtop mode but not the tablet mode.

I just got my UX-50 yesterday, and was upset to discover that the screen isn't transflective. I use mine a lot in indirect daylight (like in the car) and my 1 1/2 year old NR-70 screen kicks my UX's butt!
I'll be horrified if or when Sony releases the next generation of this device with an upgraded screen a la M505-M515 and T|T-T|2.
Improving your product model after model to entice repeat buyers is honorable, but intentionally releasing deficient equipment (ie the UX's non-transflective screen) to sell more devices with each release is despicable.

I don't think the privacy filter would help.... plus if you got it you could never really show off your uX50! especially for movies. Only you would see the movie while everyone else would see a black screen...
but if privacy is your thing...

I've used several devices with transreflective screens, and two with TFT, and in my opinion TFT screens look better. Not just a little better, but much better.
For me, TFT was the right choice. Although I can see how people who'd only used transreflective and didn't know about the tradeoffs are quite reasonably frustrated by it.

Oops, make that "three with TFT". Until I saw my sig I forgot the Casiopeia counts twice.

TFT is nicer indoors - sharper, no milkiness. However, having used transreflective and reflective screens, I have gotten used to being able to see the screen outdoors.
Darn.
