View Full Version : What would have happened if all the post counts had been deleted with the threads?

Just a thought. On occasion, I have seen some people with posts in the several thousands. A few months ago, I found out where they came from as I discovered the "Off-Topic" section on Cliesource. Interesting, including the "Undead Thread". Until I saw this section, I had no idea people were using this site for anything other than information about Clies, but many people have active, long conversations and debates on this site about almost any topic you can imagine.

Anyway, no real point here, just an observation. I for one would have been sad to loose my custom avatar, but I know that I would get it back much faster a second time around knowing that the "Off-Topic" section exists.

Long live Off-Topic!

That is one of the things that makes Cliésource great. It is about Cliés, but it is about everything else too.

What would have happened if all the post counts had been deleted with the threads? Same thing that happened when it returned WITH the post counts intact: conversation and discussion. I don't think anyone comes here with the intention of seeing how high their count can get(what is the point of that?). I do think they come here for information on a variety of subjects. I do think they come here for interesting discussions. I do think they come here to talk to friends. We come here for information and companionship.

To paraphrase Willber-force: Long live CliéSource!

Or if there's no post count. Many will not have any inspiration to post.

That's an interesting thought? Why is there a post count beyond 100? What purpose does it serve? Maybe it is a source of pride to those in the 1000's and not a meaningless number. I hadn't really thought about that.

I myself a member in quite a number of forums. I noticed most of the forums have post counts. And the most logic reason I find is because it will encourage people to most more. That makes that forum an active one. When a forum is active, more people will come and join as more help is available. For example, most quesions asked here in Cliesource is answered quite promptly I noticed.

That explains the post counts for the forums, but not the individual post counts, unless you use the same logic to say that people who have large post counts are more helpful than those with low counts, although this hasn't always been my experience.

I have to agree.

Personally, I only cared about post counts until I got to the 100 post mark. Mainly because I wanted my custom avatar and the ability to change the text under my username. (ie: That voice in your head)

But I might care again when I approach 1000.

I find the post counts and the date registred info on members nice to have. At a glance, you can get an idea of who this person is you are talking to. While haveing high posts counts doesn't mean you are nessisarily more helpful, you can still get an idea about how active someone is here.

I remember it was a big deal to pass the 100 mark. I was very excited. But now, its not about posting for numbers, but posting for pleasure.

And when I do post for pleasure, I always wear protection.

Ah!!! So being Number 1 is important! I believe that most people do post for enjoyment, but post counts are not irrelevant to the people who post either.

I'd rather not be number 1 OR number 2 ;-)

But you should also notice who they are talking to.

TBellas and Tixx are both regulars of the Undead Thread. There we joke around and get to know each other. We TEASE each other about how much we post.

It's not like the people with the high posts go around pulling 'rank' on newbies.

Recently Volcanopele and I have been having words because he is going to pass me very quickly. As I've been a UDT regular since it's inception this is somewhat of an acheivement. So I'll tease him and say it's not fair, that I'm stuck on dial up, ect. Does it cause us to post more than usual....Yes.....for about two days. Then everything goes back to normal.

As you can never see who's on the other side of the moniter things like your post count become part of your personality. But It only slightly affects how people post.

Thats like people who keep a ruler by thier beds.

So what you're saying Kate, is that broadband is the key. Better posting through technology. I expect you too pass TB, as soon as you be broadband.;)

Dial up Kate? Man, I applaud you!!! I very seriously doubt that I would post near as much as I do with a dial up line let alone as many posts as you have. Seriously, that is impressive.

No, size doesn't matter near as much as quality. I do agree with that.

Also, I agree that people with larger posts do pick on those with smaller ones. The downside is that good people might be turned off from the site. I don't mind the idle conversations of off topic, but we all know people who have gotten large posts by "trolling" and p****ing other people off. Not cool and potentially damaging.

Dial up is terrible! plus if you have AOL AND DIALup, that would blow. :(

I have DSL and I am never going back. I am just lucky that our area provides DSL.

I'm 9 posts away at this point from the magical "custom avatar 100" milestone. I guess I should head over to the UDT to put me over the top! :-)

I've tried to only add a post when I think I've had something useful to share.....to heck with that - I want my custom avatar!! :D
