I'm new at this game, so the question is probably stupid. Anyway, can third party applications be run off the memory stick on a NX or do they have to download into internal memory first? I ask, because I don't understand the purpose of a ms with lots of memory if you can only run apps based on internal memory.

depends on the app. but yes most can be run of the mem stick, i you run into an app that can't then dl a program like power run and that should fix it so you can, in most cases, again i can't guarentee it for every app.
Enjoy.

I really only use my MS for storing books, music, and video. I dont run any apps off it anymore since they seem to have to copy to ram first anyway. I know its possible to run apps off it using 3rd party software but I havent really done it yet. Perhaps once I can clean up the missing megs used by sony software once JackFlash comes out for sony pdas usinf OS5.

When some of us have 100+ apps, the internal RAM is nowhere near enough. Thus the reason for storing them on the memory stick. We treat it like a PC's hard drive of sorts.
I won't mess with the flash ROM, not worth it to me if disaster happens.

But how do you run an app directly off the memory stick?

You can't run any program directly of MS. In the best case it will download a tiny main file to your RAM, start it there, and then access it's files on memory stick.
In the worst case it will download the whole program, then modify itself in order to store data. As the main file gets not updated when using the launcher. This data would then be lost

The easiest way to do this, if your using one of the standard launchers, is to hit the menu button, then select Copy. A screen will pop up and you can select a program from the list. At the top of the window it will say "Copy to:Card From:Handheld" which is how you will want to keep it.

heh heh. I feel stupid, but when I copy an app directly to the memory stick, I can't ever find it again!! The hotsync options when i install a file only allow for install to handheld or memory stick, but no specific folder options. So when I install to ms, I lose it in space.

spradlinb's site http://www.launchplug.com/ does a good job of explaining external memory use.

I sugges "powerRUN" may help you access program in MS.

When you Hotsync and select installing to Memory Stick, it will install in to the /PALM/Launcher folder which is the only folder the built-in launcher and most of the third-party launchers will look at on the Memory Stick. And apps on the Memory Stick should show up in the last catagory in the launcher, which is named after your card.

I am having serious memory stick problems but i was not sure where to post my question... so here it is.
I recently upgraded from a clie t615. I have several photos that i installed on a memory stick using the sony utility that transfers pictures to memory sticks. When i try to use the clie viewer in my new nx60 to view the pictures it reads them very slowly-- i can see the little orange light blinking. All of the thumbnails come up onto the screen eventually, but then the orange light stays solid and the thing freezes and i have to reset. This also happens when i am trying to read large documents off of the stick-- documents to go or palm reader.
Oddly, i can listen to music off the memory stick with no problem so i have no idea what is going on.
Please Help...

First of all, Clie Viewer is painfully slow and pathetic. Addtionally how much free RAM do you have? You may just simply be running out of memory.
