View Full Version : uses for video recording

Tonight I was riding BART (local train/subway sorta deal), when this random person (I think she was a college student, or some such) sat down in front of me, and out of the blue, asked me if she could ask a few questions. At the time, I was playing with my clie, and, on a whim, discretely flipped open the camera, and started filming.
Turns out, she was trying to decide what to do in life, what with her major, and whatnot, and I guess it must have been really bothering her, to talk to some random guy on the subway. I realized that what I had here, could make a very interesting documentary, or something. People always kind of censor or edit themselves a bit, when they know a camera is rolling, but not if they think they're just talking to some stranger they'll never see again.
At the end of our conversation, I admitted to her that I'd video taped it, and explained to her about the idea that had started to form in my brain. I asked if it was ok with her if I kept the video, and possibly used it, if not, she could watch me delete it. She gave the go-ahead, and so now, I'm trying to think the idea through all the way, if it's even worth doing, if I could get a cohesive, complete project out of it, etc.
That's what I'm currently using my video recorder for; what about the rest of you?

That's a neat idea to do a documentary like that. People really do seem to act different when in the spotlight of a camera. Most of my friends are shocked when I show them some pictures I've taken, though there are other times they are mad at me for not being on scene to film something funny. They borrow my Clie and group around it to watch a stunt that we did and laugh. But they are most satisfied to hear the audio that goes with the video, and I have to admit that the mic doesn't sound that bad to my ears and does a good job at capturing the sound, though I've noticed it is easy at times to get some clipping action.
I find the videos produced (by my NX80V) to be too low resolution to make movies or anything, so I just stick to making short clips. I usually save it for a few funny stunts in the day time, but most of the time it sees little use. If the resolution was at least 320x240 I would definately have a lot more video, provided the quality/file size wasn't too bad. But the current resolution isn't very inspiring...
Stuff that I have recorded:
1) A few team cheers at cross country meets
2) Some different ways to throw a bowling ball and hit pins (or not) - Interestingly this didn't come out too bad though it was somewhat dark with a lot of purple / black lighting with some neon colored lighting.

yeah, my friends already have had me use it to make clips of us skating and (usually) falling on our butts.
As for the resolution, I think it kind of adds to the charm of the documentary, at least for me. I also played around with the different effects, which I think are kind of cool, to be able to film in negative, or solarize, etc.

Hey Fellas, even though there low-res someone should put up a site with random film that they have aquired during the day or the week. Kinda like a video journal with their CLIE.

Dolphin, that's what I'm talking about. I got a chance to see what people do with their CLIE's, if I had a MS I would have this forum loaded with all kinds of stuff. Instead of getting an MS I got a 1G MicroDrive, I guess I get to watch movies instead of taking them.

:-) I have found that with the screen facing up and flat the clie can slide the camera under a lot of doors, leaving the screen on your side and the other side of the door on the screen...... I've found people act even more strangly when they think there in a room alone!!!

I really can't get over that guy because he had no discretion or shame. I might do that, but I'd never tell. More power to you I guess.

I work as a paramedic and have often video taped bad car accidents and shown the videos to the doctor in the emergency room. By seeing the wreckage it helps them to determine where a person may have sustained an injury.
