View Full Version : Fellowes (ThinkOutside) full keyboard is really great!

I purchased a Fellowes full-size (not XT) Stowaway keyboard and I must say, it's just as good of an experience as when I had the then-named Targus keyboard for my Visor Deluxe.
This is my take on keyboards: The XT looks sexy, folds up sexy, and is sexy thin, but the full-size keyboard STILL elicits gasps and exclamations of incredulity when unfolded for use. And having compared the width and length of the Stowaway vs the XT and Sony's KB100, when folded the Stowaway is smaller than either one.
PLUS I don't have to worry about the number row as I have one just like my regular desktop keyboard.
And I still don't know about those who say that you can't use it on your lap. I did for two years while in grad school and I still do today.
What a great piece of engineering. What a marvelous day and age we live in, eh?

Yeah, well. How much space does your Stowaway keyboard take when transporting it ? Isn't a bit big if not foldable. Would you have a link to look at ?

I believe it still folds, just not the same way as the XT. You can see it on amazon...

It sounds like you are not familiar with this product. It is an ingenious product that indeed folds. Hence the name "stow" and "away"--it is a full size keyboard, yet folds so small that you can stow it away anywhere. It can fit in a pocket. Here's a link:
http://www.thinkoutside.com/products.asp
Under "See it work," click on "Stowaway" (not Stowaway XT).

Hi:
I just received my Stowaway (non XT) keyboard from thinkoutside (it was branded "Fellowes") and it is a perfect match for my NX70V.
The keyboard is very good size and feel-wise. The response to the screen is (as far as I can see) instantaneous. The keys work perfectly with the Clie...that is, when I press the "Memo' key on the keyboard, the note pad pops up. I can press the "new" key to get a new memo.
It seems to work perfectly with Docs to Go and Wordsmith.
It backspaces and highlights superbly (I can highlight words by pressing a key combination).
All in all I am very happy wityh the device...it is much cheaper than the XT model. The non-XT model (whicn I am talking about here) has a full number key row (but the number "1" key is a bit smaller than the rest).
Only two tiny problems: (1) The person (yes, a human!) at thinkoutside said they would send it via Parcel Post. They sent it UPS (ot me in Canada) and I had to pay an extra $20 brokering fees through customs.
(2) The instruction manual says that the Palm PC model supports a power plug to charge thos units when using the keyboard. The Clie model does not.
I rate this devide very highly!!!!

Is there anywhere in Canada that you can buy this or did you order from the U.S.
I see another message here about getting nicked for customs fees at the border.

redvette_ragtop,
when leaving the keyboard alone for a while, is there a delay, or what you call "lag" when you first type a key? (where the letter appears on the screen 1/2 seconds later)... I've been expiernecing this problem with my kb100, and i've been thinking if i should switch to the regular stowaway from thinkoutside. THus its 3 times as cheap!!!!
btw do they ship to canada???

BarryM: I have the XT and mine charges just fine and I have a nx70. Make sure you get their latest driver as this was not initially supported in the driver included on the CD (I assume if the xt can now support it so can the full size model).
So let me clarify, the regular (not xt) one is actually smaller than the xt when it's folded up???

Does anyone know if they came out with a driver for the NX80 yet? I used to love using it when I had the NX70, but it doesn't work with the 80.

I've had two besides the most recent one and its just a great design. Yes the XT, KB100, and IR ones are nice. But Targus got there first, and it got it right.

ok i think i'm planning to send my kb100 back and get my 150CAD back........... i'm actually tired of the constant lagging /delay for the kb100. moreover, the driver sux and i think it is not worth to use it any longer.

size is smaller, but the XT doesn't have a separate row of number keys.

Don't know how to answer that for you, but here's a thought...
The problem with wireless, in my opinion, is that you'd have to have TWO places for hardware. For example, if I'm a passenger in a car, with my Stowaway it is no problem for me to attach my Clie and type away with it on my lap. If it was a wireless duo, I would need a place for the keyboard AND figure out where to put the Clie.

I bought this through eBay in the US. It was brand new. I have no idea about Canadian sources, sorry.

No, I don't experience a lag or delay of any sort. I have not experienced any problems at all.
Re: Canada, I have no idea about that, but I think another post (which you probably have already read) mentioned something about that. I'm wondering if you got one on eBay, how much the seller would charge to send it to you. And if you would get the customs fee if sent from a private party.

Yes, in width, but not in thinness. The XT is thinner and lighter. But because of that semi-circle connector on the XT, it is wider.
XT:
*Closed: 5.5" x 3.9" x 0.5" (139mm x 99mm x 13mm)
*Open: 9.9" x 5.8" x 0.5" (251mm x148mm x 13mm)
*Weight: 5.6 oz. (160 grams)
Full:
*Closed: 3.6” x 5.1” x 0.8” (93 mm x 130 mm x 20 mm)
*Open: 13.8” x 5.1” x .44” (352 mm x 130 mm x 11 mm)
*Weight: 7.9 oz. (224 grams)

Yes. There is a slight bend in the middle and for that reason some say you can't use it on a lap. I find that it is still stable and firm enough for a lap. Personal preference, I guess. Also, because the PDA connects slightly off-center to the left, the weight of the PDA rests primarily on my left thigh, giving it more support.

hmm i think you don't know how the palmOne wireless keyboard looks like. There is a holder that is attached to the keyboard to put your palm, just like the original Stowaway keyboards.
I tested my NX70 with my friend's wireless keyboard. The touch and responsiveness is great, but one thing: the holder seems to be too weak for my heavy NX70 to put on. If i push or pull the keyboard at bit the holder (or the leg of the holder) will colapse and the CLIE will fall off.
better get the cheaper, more durable stowaway.

Oh, the PalmOne wireless. I thought you were talking about the Belkin Wireless Keyboard. (Which is junk, to my understanding.)
You might check out the Targus Universal Wireless:
http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=PA870U
I believe from the description that it is compatible with the NX70V because on the right side has a link to DL the driver updates for Sony's with OS5. This one also allows you to rotate the PDA for landscape view. Don't know what good that would do an NX70V owner, but...
