Thanks, mdlsimpson!
A couple of other things I've noticed:
*Made in Japan (vs. Made in China for the TE, for what it's worth).
*Casing and flip cover feel so much more substantial and much less SLIPPERY than the TE. Even the "mirror" sides feel less slippery than the TE's casing.
*Includes a small wrist strap (No doubt it's common knowledge, but I didn't expect that. I won't being using it, but nice that Sony included it for those who might like one.)
*Can't wait for the cradle to arrive! Not a possiblity with the TE (yet).

Strange that the clie's brightness is lower and has an older level brightness scale. My tg50's screen definitely looks more like the one used with the te. With the tj35, it looks like there are only 4 levels of brightness...

You are correct. There seem to be just four brightness levels. I'll be keeping mine at the maximum setting, so the number of levels means little to me. Valid observation, however. Perhaps 4 levels of brightness will not suit some people.
At any rate, the TE wins the brightness showdown hands down. Likewise, the stylus is much more comfortable and, thus, usable on the TE. I may need to grow into using the Sony's stylus. Time will tell.
For me, the TJ35 is the superior PDA because:
*It feels so much more substantial and less slippery in hand.
*The flip cover is a great design, which not only protects the TJ35's face, but offers no evidence of the sand paper effect the TE's flip cover produces with its stitching. The TJ35's flip cover does not move around the face of the PDA when closed as does the swaying flip cover included with the TE.
*The TJ35's flip cover appears to be wrapped in dense nylon fabric, which is both soft and strong.
*It will retain it's good looks as long as I treat it with normal care, while the TE looked a mess after a few days of being pocketed with the flip cover.
*The speaker is louder.
*Charge status LED (an unexpected and very welcome plus)
*The jog dial, much maligned for being relocated, has a great feel and can be pressed as a button. This is leaps and bounds better than the issue ridden dpad on the TE. I found the "hard to press in the down direction" dpad on the TE to be usable (more so over time), but the TJ35's solution is elegant in form and function.
*Cradle is an option with the TJ35 (and on the way to my house), but not with the TE (not yet, anyway).
*The power button has that "Hold" feature. I like that about my iPod, and I like it about this Clie, too.
Despite my initial anger with Palm for what I feel to be a poor choice of finish materials for the TE's casing and flip cover, I do not wish them ill. A healthy PalmOne is good for all of us who like the simplicity (and, for me, non-Microsoft nature) of the PalmOS. By purchasing my new Clie, I'm also supporting PalmSource, and that is a great thing.

This looks like classic sony. It's making it's high-end look better by cutting back on the low-end. They intentionally used a cheaper screen, with only four brightness levels. Probably saved $50 on the price right there. I know this because I compared the T|E and the TG50's screen, and the TG50's seemed brighter.

So the screen of the TJ35 seems a bit dim (in particular compared to the TŠE. How's the battery life with full brightness?

Maybe, I am a bit thick, but I compared the TJ35 to my T665 and they seemed much closer than the TJ25 and my T665. I was happy enough with the brightness and think that it will definitely do. I just thought that I would weigh in my thoughts that the TJ35 seems a bit brighter than the TJ25. Anyone else notice this?

Is it me or what? When i compare my clies with palm, i found that both units with no backlights being switch on, the display on a palm is viewable compared to clie. the screen on clie is dark. the icons on the latest palm is good too

Screen of the T3! It is great!

Here in Germany I've seen a lot of differences in T3 screens.
Some are a lot bright than others.
Perhaps it is the same with the TJ35.
My guess is that the production of PDAs had to become cheaper and the screens aren't all 100 percent the same.
My TJ35 is coming in about 2 weeks :)

Great photos. I'm going to keep my T|E.. The screen on the E is fantastic -- the best I've seen on a 320 x 320 device so far. I wouldn't be able to handle a dim, blue screen after having used the T|E, or even the T|2 (which is dimmer than the E).
I agree on the finish -- I really like the case design on the TJ35, but put a felt lining on the T|E and now don't have to worry about scratching the face of the Palm.
I'm hoping Sony will make a TJ50 with a 320 x 480 screen and RESTORE jog dial. the thing on the front just doesn't cut it.

Day One
Day one with the TJ35 has me a little bummed. Spoiled by the bright TE and Z71 displays, the darker (grayish to me, as opposed to white) display of the TJ35 bothered me today. I don't think it would have bothered me at all, had I not been used to the brighter displays of the Palms. I kept wondering if I had the brightness all the way up, and indeed I checked this several times.
I work in a very well lit room, which may have something to do with my initial impressions. The TJ35 seems to look better to me in moderate lighting, such as here at home on my desk. In a classroom full of flourescent lights and sunlit windows, however, I really missed the Palm displays.
The low powered Ir caused a co-worker some consternation this morning as she was beaming BigClock and a few demo games from the TJ35 to her Sony NX(?). I didn't notice exactly which Clie she had (I was setting up networking for another co-worker), but it had a long flip out screen, a camera, and virtual Grafitti. She had to hold the TJ35 right next to her Clie, and at an angle, to get them to communicate. I'm not sure which Clie lacked the Ir power, but this was never an issue with any of my Palms.
The stylus didn't bother me, but I still prefer the thicker TE stylus which seems very much like the one I had with my M500, aside from the new finish. Size and weight are comparable. The TJ35's stylus snaps into the PDA snugly, but the thinner telescoping section is easily disturbed (loose) even in the PDA silo. To answer the question someone asked regarding whether or not I had to pull the stylus on both ends to get it to snap fully open, the answer is yes. Sony could learn from Palm's Tungsten T in this regard, as the TT has a wonderful telescoping stylus which is spring loaded, thicker, and solid.
One other niggle was the screen font used on the Clie. I like the bolder look of text presented on the Palms. The dimmer screen makes thinner fonts harder to read. A glance at the screen was not enough today. I had to focus on the screen much more than when using the TE to read student data.
Battery life "seemed" better than that of the TE, but I would need to use the TJ35 a few more days to really compare this.
All of this leaves me wishing for the best of both worlds (TJ35 and TE) in one PDA. I wish Palm had built the TE with the TJ35's build quality and given us the option of purchasing a cradle. I've already advised (politely, without seeming to beg) my wife that when such a PDA arrives, and I'm certain (okay, praying) this will happen within a few months, I'm upgrading again.
I'm back to using the TE (with foams pads inside the cover). I bought two TEs when they came out, one for me and one for my wife. She likes the Clie very much, with it's nice cover and cradle (the cradle arrived today). She is less concerned with the issues described above. I'm slowly convincing her that a PDA will indeed prove useful to her. So, I'm using the undamaged TE originally purchased for her, and she has the TJ35.
I'm posting this message because I don't want to sway anyone to buy one device over the other. It's a very personal choice. Again, as I posted previously, I recommend that you check these two devices out in person. Only then will you know which one is right for you. For me, neither meets all of my expectations, so I'm making due with the easily blemished TE (Grafitti 2 stickers cut to cover flip cover stitching) while my wife discovers the benefits of a PDA with the TJ35. Here's hoping spring brings an upgraded Tungsten E with a brilliant screen, tablet form, the build quality of an M500 and a cradle as an option. That's the PDA I really want, and I'm willing to pay more than $199 to get it.
I'm hoping someone comes out with a very nice alternative flip cover for the TE. I don't like the added thickness a case brings, which is one reason I opted to sell the Z71 when the TE became available. As for my "beat up TE", it is being put to use in my own household. My 3 year old loves the Kids Pack, and my 6 and 8 year old daughters love being able to use it (and the Tungsten T) to practice math and play games. I love not worrying about it getting scratched. As someone posted in another forum, that's one ugly PDA.

thanks a bunch, this has definitely swayed my vote for the tj. However I must ask is the difference between the two that much of a difference. Because i know that cameras can often muffle the picture and brightness.

I decided to provide you with a couple more pics to really drive the difference home:
http://schmittweb.tripod.com/images/hi-low.jpg
http://schmittweb.tripod.com/images/hi-half.jpg
http://schmittweb.tripod.com/images/te_foam.jpg
With the TJ35 at full brightness and the TE at its lowest setting, the displays look equally bright to me.
With the TJ35 at full brightness and the TE at half (where I usually leave it), the camera makes the TE look washed out (it isn't washed out in person) as the camera struggles with the different brightness levels in the exposure.
Since the screen and stylus brought me back to the TE, I decided to use foam pads on the inside of the flip cover to prevent scratches to the face plate's finish. Yes, I've already been told that the dots are unattractive, but they are very attractive to me because they have yet to scratch the surface of the PDA. The "sanded" TE now belongs to my children, and I am using the TE I had originally purchased for my wife. She likes the size, shape, look, and features of the TJ35.
Please check both units out in person. Only then will you be sure of which might be right for you. I do sense that the TJ35 moves between apps a bit more quickly, but the difference is very small. If either the screen or the stylus is of primary importance to you, the TE is the clear winner.
Good luck in your decision making. :)

I've looked at the TJ in the store displays with full brightness and compared against the T|E, and it is totally noticeable.
The T|E is better brightness than any T3 I've seen too. (and I make sure to turn brightness up)
Of course, I like my NX80 screen the best of all. (yes-different form factor, but from a pure screen perspective,it's just a beauty)
I'm surprised at the brightness issue, but if people like different aspects of the TJ series, hey, it's whatever works.

I am returning my TJ35 today that I bought from Circuit City because it is missing too, too much. I still like my T665 better than what is out there. Now that, everyone is saying that the T/E is body is horrible, I have to consider buying another one. I am utterly frustrated now. I hope the TG50 replacement comes out soon.
