Don't worry, it's just a quality control thing. Some might be louder than the others. Some might not have it at all.

I was just going to post something on this myself. Mine has gotten louder over the last few days to the point where it's really, really annoying. I'm thinking of taking it back.

Incidently, it's not connected to the backlight. If I turn the screen on but the backlight off it still buzzes.

Mine has the same when the unit is connected to the extended battery and both are on the cradle.

After some time, a buzing sound comes out, quite evident; all I have to do, is to turno the unit on: the sound disappears.

Btw, my unit will not remain when on the cradle; after some minutes it will power off, even if I check "Stay on in cradle" in Prefs - General.

That's so wierd. Mine only does it when it's on. It's at the point now where I can hear it from about 10 feet away if the unit's on and in the cradle. This is definitely going to have to go back, especially if not every unit has this problem. :(

Yes mine sings pretty well. About an 16k~18khz tone. It's gotten worse since it arrived 5 weeks ago. I called Sony. They will service the unit, but I must do without it for a couple of days (I feel the symptoms of withdrawal coming on!!). I'll post updated info when I get it back.

Aww crap. Mine just started whining last night out of the cradle with the extended battery. Not doing it this morning.

Does anybody else with a whining problem find that it stops when you touch the screen?

This has really gotten too much for me. I have to return it, probably this weekend. Is there any way to back it up, transfer the backup to the PC and then put the backup file in the new machine? I don't have a memory stick yet, since I'm saving for the one-gigger..

Ditto to that. Whenever I turn my head so that my ear faces the screen there is constant high pitched noise (sounds like my significant other)

justanoob, keep us updated on if your new one also has noise. if so, gotta get me a new one too! is yours a US ver or a Japanese ver?

I was one of the first to get a UX when released and a few nights ago it started humming. I read in bed at night with the UX and the noise was obvious and annoying. I called Sonyand they said they'd repair it (seven days). But I went back to CompUSA and they gave me a new one (used up my TAP, tho). So far so good. The guy at CompUSA said it was the processor fan and that they go bad on the NZ all the time.

Mine buzzes too. It doesn't do it all the time though.
It started after I had it about 2 weeks ( and I waited 2 weeks after launch before I got it.)
It's loud enough that I figure I could hear it from 6 or more feet away.

Seems like a waste of a TAP, given that it was under warranty and must be within a month of getting it. The point of the TAP is to protect you for things that aren't covered under warranty (i.e. accidental dropping). They should have replaced it without the TAP, since if I walked into BB today I'd get mine replaced even tho I don't have a TAP. You should go back and get them to reinstate your TAP, IMO.

Incidently I have the US version.

Funny thing about the noise: in some ways it's like an audio-laser , in that if I hold it at a slight angle I can't hear it. When it started I could only hear it if I turned my head to the side. Now I can hear it with my head facing the screen, but only if the screen is parallel to the plane of my face or turned not more than 45 degrees up. Down-plane there's no sound. Or there is a sound, but I can't hear it. I don't know. Maybe it's a zen thing.

I'm rambling. I gotta get some coffee.

Mine clicks (not buzzes) when the charge gets to full. It comes and goes, corresponding to the orange light being off or on. Last night something weird happened. It was doing that clicking after charging for about 2 hours. So I pulled the UX out of the cradle and turned it on, and the battery showed 75%! (no change after 2 hours of charging!). So I did a reset, clicking stopped, and charge showed 100%. Weird.

Granted my cradle is mildly hacked, but I think there's something screwy with the charging circuit. Also, the last time I soft--reset my UX, the keyboard light didn't come on, even though it was set to be "on". Going into prefs, selecting "off" then "on" again made it work. That was before this charging weirdness. After my last soft reset, everything seems fine. It clicked a little at me this morning when the charge light went off, but then it stopped.

I wonder if it's just a matter of time before all our UX' start making wailing sounds and stop charging. :|

I had one that was fine when I got it, but after a couple of weeks, the buzzing noise started. Then, it continued to get louder and louder until it was extremely annoying in a quiet room. You could even hear it in a somewhat noisy environment, too. I ended up getting my money back.
