I ask Sony a question:
"It is stated in the specs that u can only view JPEG images on your monitor. Is it a hardware issue or its just that the software has no feature for viewing Movies or even the Haldhelds screen on the Monitor via a AV output."

Thank you for your interest in Sony's CLIE PEG-NZ90 CLIE Handheld.
The PEG-NZ90 Handheld has the ability to capture MPEG videos with the built-in Camera. The MPEG videos are stored on the Memory Stick Media. You can connect the PEG-NZ90 to a TV via an Audio Video cable and watch the videos on the TV.

I followed up my question about what video formats are supported and I will be posting it as soon as I'll recieve it.

If that were, so it'd be awesome!!! Talk about vacation picture/video torture!!! The specs on the Sonystyle sight were pretty specific in mentioning JPEG only though...

What??? holy crap!! are you serious? Man I need my NZ90 now, I can't wait two more weeks!!!!!!!! Being able to view jpg's on the TV is one of the key features of the NZ in my opinion. I hope this is true about the video... that would be so cool if it works as the tech. person said.
Yeah when I e-mailed sony last week I got back the same response. When i asked them to elaborate they just sent back the exact same e-mail.
I think you'll find that the AV out is linked to Digital Camera functions only. I wouldn't be surprised if the digital camera tech in the NZ90 is very similar to that of a DSC-P31 or a DSC-U20L. Much like they've done with putting audio in by using a different DSP they've probably integrated a whole digital camera interface board into the NZ90. Which rocks!. I think products with everything integrated are great, as long as there is no sacrifice in quality.
i.e If a Treo had a 320x320 screen with integrated bluetooth and audio player I would snap it up. instead we are left with OS 3.5.3 and a DSTN screen :)

Just breathe Eric - we're all here for you ;)
It looks like it's going to be the 20th as the earliest that we'll see these babies moving anywhere. Nobody's gonna get them sooner. Sony is greedy, but they ain't stupid. Nobody's going to have them moving before Sony does.
I've made a couple of contacts in my quest for the NZ, and I feel good that they'll keep me in the loop as to their respective launch dates. If I have anything to share, I certainly will.

<clipped from an email sent to me by the S.O.>
Danny:
Can you "touch" it? You mean my Nx? The nice, shiny, very-well-tended to one that I have in my hands??
Let me get this straight: you want to touch the Clie' that I put together and sent this email on. Is that about right?
MUAH, HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA......in your dreams buster. :D
Hogs and Quiches,
me
So, I'm basically screwed.
I'll be offline for a while, digging a pit to bury their body when they do make the mistake of returning ;)

No, that's the email response to me when I asked if I could touch my former Nx once in a while until I get the NZ. That was their reply ;)

Here is my follow up question to Sony as I Promised:
Customer (Philgin Eng Tai) - 02/07/2003 06:49 PM
It answered the question but are all MPEG video FORMATs supported on the AV to TV? If not, what are the VIDEO formats that are supported? Can you also view the Piscel Viewer on the TV? Can you also view the Handheld's Screen on AV->TV? I
can't wait to have this NZ90. BTW, when will it be released in ASIA specifically here in the Philippines?

Thank you for your interest in Sony's CLIE PEG-NZ90 CLIE Handheld.
I apologize for the wrong information.
The AV output is for viewing still images only and not MPEG videos. The PEG-NZ90 Handheld capture high resolution still images on a Memory Stick Media with the built-in Camera. You can view the still images captured by the NZ90 on the TV by connecting the Handheld to the TV via an Audio video cable. The manual is supplied with the Handheld that gives complete regarding this.
I do not have information on when the PEG-NZ90 CLIE Handheld will be released in Asia.

Do you think she's just f***ing with us? She made us very excited but then a big dissappointment. I'm also sorry guys for that information.

Yep...Jpeg only and the official release/launch date in Asia is Feb 20th but will be in store on 16th (distribution purposes.) according to Sony reps.

You know it shouldn't be that hard for someone to make a program that will capture the screen to the AV output. The capability is obviously there Sony just didn't want to include videos or screen capture with it.
But it seems like such a shame. It can probably do it, why not just go that one extra step?

I knew it was too good to be true!!! Viewing JPG's on the TV will still be totally awesome!, by the way I went into the "sony store" in San Francisco... I spoke to several salespeople, they didn't know what I was talking about (the NZ90). ....so looks like the 20th is definitely the date we'll all have to wait for!

yeah the folks at SF Metreon don't have a clue. A couple of weeks back, I went there to see if they have any kind of info on the NZ and they had no idea what I was talking about.

ikkoku,
most of the sales people there probably aren't as "geekly" as us, they are there for a job...not necessarily an interest in the products. I don't blame them, I've been in similar situations my self!
u can speak for yourself but personally I don't bite the heads off chickens.... I prefer computer enthusiast.

My follow up msg:
Customer (Philgin Eng Tai) - 02/08/2003 10:16 PM
Oh I see. I guess the specs is right but thanks for trying. So is this issue of
still images only a software issue or a hardware one. Because if it is a
Software issue then playing MPEG videos will be supported later just by updating
the Software right? Maybe Sony or perhaps a 3rd party developer will release a
Software that is capable of viewing MPEG videos.
I still want to clarify this: Can the piscel viewer be viewed on TV too or just
the plain JPEG still images only?
Thank you very much for your support. More power to you and your company.

Thank you for contacting us with your query regarding the PEG-NZ90 CLIE
Handheld.
The AV out on the PEG-NZ90 CLIE Handheld is controlled by software and hardware.
The frame rate of MPEG videos is different then the TV broadcast frame rate and
hence it may not be possible to view the MPEG videos on the TV screen. So
upgrading the software may not solve this issue. The MPEG videos can be viewed
by playing them in the CLIE Handheld.
The AV out on the PEG-NZ90 CLIE Handheld is for viewing still images on the TV
and not MPEG videos.

Would it BE wishful thinking (forced upgrade) for a similar cradle to be sold for the NX?
The innards are identical... but not resolution... :(

For anyone that has other Sony gear that can hook to the tv via a/v lines.
My 717 and my trv30 video camera can show both still and video.
Assuming Clie Album is the program used to output the pictures, why can't it show video?
The Sony e-mail that attributes different frame rate of the tv as the issue, doesn't make sense, Sony cameras show both a/v on a regular tv already. Video output through a line is plain video output, just like when you run a vcr video output to your tv video input.
For what it is worth, I have been testing my memory stick on the new MS enabled WEGA tvs. They can play my pictures, but I don't think they played my mpegs.
Thoughts?
