What are the titles to consider in deciding which personal finance software to use? Is there something like Quicken for the Clie?

Yes there is Quicken for Palm (Clie). It is supposed to integrate with your desktop Quicken. Do a search on Palmgear or Handango.

I use Quicken for palm. Have been using it for years starting with my Palm Vx and now Clie NX. It's great and syncs with Quicken desktop.

get it at www.pocketquicken.com
There is also a ms money program, but I've never used it....

These would be the most advanced, but primarily because of their desktop features (ie able to pull data from banks)...

If you just want your finances on your palm, there are tons, SplashMoney to start... Go to palmgear.com and do a browse under the corresponding category.

I already have Quicken on my PC and wasn't really interested in having it on my Clie. I just wanted a way to upload transactions into Quicken. I bought SplashWallet Suite (because I also wanted SplashID) and I use SplashMoney to just enter and upload any transactions directly into Quicken. Works for me!

Never had a problem, unless I had to do a hard reset, and that was two months ago. Fortunately for me, I had my backups on my MS and synced to Quicken.

I use Quik Budget and Pocket Money. They play together nicely. If you make an entry in one app, the other recognizes it. I use Quik Budget for budgeting my money, and quick entries when I'm shopping. Pocket Money is more like my checkbook register, and it works with Quicken and MS Money.

I use Ultrasoft Money (Palm) to synchronize with MS Money 2003 (PC)

I've tried ultrasoft money but I prefer splashmoney. MS Money is annoying for the desktop.

^ If you do happen to use Money, you'll love Ultrasoft Money.

Probably the best source for freeware is http://www.freewarepalm.com/. However, they do have many programs that are really trialware. Trialware is NOT freeware.

If you want something like a simple checkbook registry, you gotta go with PocketMoney, the new version is hi-res+, super easy and intuitive to use.

I have PocketQuicken by Landware (this is what people call Quicken for Palm)... http://www.landware.com

It's a great little program - my finances are accounted for to the penny!

You said you wanted a freeware program just to track account balanaces? I don't understand... I would have thought you'd want a full blown financial program to do the tracking of cash inflow/outflows, or you could just write down your balances periodically in anything, like the NotePad or a database or something.

Personally, I'm of the belief that the best value comes from tracking every single transaction - then you can generate _meaningful_ reports on your spending habits etc etc. Also if you do a "one two, skip a few" sort of financial tracking, you keep ending up entering some adjustment amount to bring you back to your balance.

Anyway, recommendation goes to PocketQuicken.
Syncs beautifully with Quicken XG (the latest Canadian Quicken edition)

Cheers

I have Quicken on my desktop, but have not used it extensively. Can you tell me whether Quicken can track payments on debts, say like one's student loans? Can it tell you how many more payments you have remaining, how much interest you've paid, etc... essentially a loan amortization chart?
