What is the drawbacks of having a Bluetooth connection to the PC vs a WLAN except the range? One thing is that the computer have to be turned on to browse I suppose which is not the case with Bluetooth.

Is the speed slower?

Any other negative aspects?

bluetooth is slow.

I am hoping it will work with my new apple bluetooth keyboard, that kind of thing this is good for.

With BT you still need the computer turned on. BT is slow. About 1 Mb/s.

edit: whoops, got the speed all wrong.

-> sonicboy : u need HID profile for keyboard/mouse/joystick..not implemented in the ux - no other pda are known to have this profile, it's just has been delivered for windows dongles -

I'm not counting on using the keyboard with the UX but it might be nice..

I don't think we'll see this on our actual ux ; the next profile to appear should be the audio one for mono sound on headset but i really doubt this will be available for present devices

Bluetooth keyboard with UX50 sounds like an interesting concept. :)

But about the speed of Bluetooth connection, it's quite slow, & as previous posters has already mentioned, you still need the computer turned on. So...

Actually BT connection is what I'm doing at the current, & hotsync is approx. 3 mins!
WiFi seems to be much quicker & a better preference, though I've not personally tried it, I think many others here with the UX has gotten much better speed with WiFi. :p

bluetooth is slow for sync but it draws much less battery than wi-fi so I use it when not in a hurry and if I'm in a hurry well... I guess I dont have time to hotsync at all :P

I agree totally LOL :D
No time to sync, & I don't use the cables anymore, that's why.

the reason why BT is slow on the Palm is because the PalmOS does not support the correct BT spec's. basically everything is emulated thru the serial profile and on palm, serials goes at a MAX of 115,xxx. thats why its slow.

however like everyone else said, the official spec is around 10mbps.

10mbps kidding dude ;)

Bluetooth 1.1 max rate is 768kbps - not sure it's the exact rate but that's below 1mb -

oups yea, sorry your right, still that is MUCH faster then what the palm limits it to.

Bluetooth is slow, but not as slow as you think. Well worth the time of not having to plug it in.

is the palm speed cap only for hotsync or for all bluetooth comunications?
I do remember being shocked by how fast it seemed when sending a file to and from my laptop (just a straight bluetooth send)

that was only after seeing how slow sync was.. havn't tried the net over bluetooth yet..

I hate software limitations.. really rub my fur backwards..

bluetooth is still cool because it hardly touches the battery

surfing the net is acceptable, actually it's quite good for me. :p
& small file transfer are at decent speed. This task is done via smbmate for me though.

Really? I thought bluetooth was more of a power drain?

than wi-fi?? you gotta be kidding...

how long canyou surf with wi-fi, about 2-3 hours.. bluetooth should last much longer

----OFF TOPIC----

Hey Sonic, it's me Gadraw...how's it going?

I have a question regarding the JP/EN dictionary. I remember one post you said you put the JP/EN dictionary in your internal media...how do you go about doing that? Just simply move it with Clie Files?

Thanks :)

sonicboy
10-19-2003, 01:45 AM
hey there, yep thats right, just move it to the MSFILES directory and it will work

all the best

GADRAW

oops...i forgot to ask you sonic...

which file(S) is the JP/EN dictionary?

also, are you familiar with bunko viewer (japanese ebook reader)? that thing is 906k...i tried putting it in powerrun, but it crashed the bunko viewer so i had to erase and reinstall...

thanks

Mix.pdb 3394K (this one is simple & direct 2 way En-JP/ JP-EN) :p
The others are Eiwa.pdb, Waei.pdb (there're small & large versions as you can tell with the difference of the file size)
Hope this helps. ;)

Eddy

Oh, & they go into /Palm/Programs/MSFiles/ directory, although mentioned already, just incase. ;)

I guess Bluetooth would last longer, but the speed connection is slower compared to WiFi. So perhaps it's a give and take kinda deal. You have faster access, but less battery. You get longer play time, but slower speed. :D

GADRAW

thanks Eddy :)

GADRAW

hmmm..i can find Eiwa.pdb and Waei.pdb, but i can't locate Mix.pdb or direct 2 way En-JP/ JP-EN

so there's total of 4 files to move?

sonicboy
10-19-2003, 02:32 AM
Mix.pdb is the 2 way dictionary he mentioned.. it is just both the jap to eng and eng to jap combined so you dont have to switch.. thats the one I use as space isn't a prob with the UX..

thats a total of 1 file to move.. I think you have to get it from the CD that came with the UX, its not on the UX50 out of the box

GADRAW
10-19-2003, 02:35 AM
oh i see...

so it's only one file if its Mix.pdb

and 2 files if itIs Eiwa.pdb (2036k) and Waei.pdb (1362k)?

Eddy

yep, so it's more or less of a personal preference here I guess.
I too only use the Mix.pdb file, since it's alot more convient for me at least. :)
If you install them all, it's quite space consuming, & I don't see much difference between them. So just one dictionary will do for me. :p

hmmm..i can find Eiwa.pdb and Waei.pdb, but i can't locate Mix.pdb or direct 2 way En-JP/ JP-EN
Really? that's wierd, it was also on the CD that came with my previous NX70. hum...

I know the dictionary doesn't have as many entrys as say.. the edict.. but I can look up most kanji using decuma and that is...

FABULOUS!!!!

sonicboy
