View Full Version : New (to me) TG50 Won't Hotsync...

I have an NZ90 which I sync via USB on my ThinkPad no problem...

I just got a mint TG50 for my wife to replace her Treo 90 and cannot get the computer and the USB cradle to communicate.

Here's the system:

- Toshiba Satellite 2805
- Windows ME
- 192MB RAM
- Logitech USB mouse
- Two physical USB ports

- TG50 with USB cradle

- Hotsync Prefs set to USB

I followed the instructions in the Clie Quick Start guide. The TG had been hard-reset, so I gave it my wife's Hotsync name from the Treo...

I installed the Clie Palm Desktop software without the cradle installed. It said that there was previous version of the Palm desktop installed and did I want it removed? I said yes, and it seemed to install.

I then connected the cradle and tried to do a Hotsync, nothing.

I then UNINSTALLED the Treo Palm Desktop (which had really NOT been removed...) and reinstalled the Clie Palm Desktop. Inserted the new name of the TG50 in the appropriate window. Got to the end and clicked 'Finish'. Rebooted the machine, checked my USB settings, no conflicts. Connected the cradle, tried a hotsync: NOTHING.

The most I was able to get was for the mouse cursor to 'blip' when I pressed the Hotsync button, so some sort of signal is getting through...

It sometimes gives a message saying that COM 1 is unavailable, but the machine has no physical COM ports. The COM info in System Device Manager says that COM 3 is active with no conflicts. The mouse is a Logitech USB. I tried unplugging the mouse to see if there was a conflict there, no luck.

I will go through the trouble shooting manual when I get home, but any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Tony

Since you probably have a memory stick, Have you installed MSexport/import? If not, I would do that, and then try running MSImport on the TG50. The memory stick should show up as a separate drive. If so, it obviously isn't a USB problem. And since you've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling... well, nothing else to say!

This may help.

I read something yesterday that sounds very similar to your problem.

It turned out the solution was to watch the device manager when you hotsync. Apparantly sometimes the USB cradle is recognized, the driver not found and so hotsync fails.

The solution was to watch the device manager and when the ? appears next to the Sony handheld to right click it and click on update driver. Locate the USB driver and then it works.

There was a great URL to a detailed description but I've lost that. hopefully I've given you enough to at least have something to look for.

Sid:

Thanks for the advice.

I cleaned the contacts of both the cradle and the Clie with alcohol and a soft toothbrush and them let them dry thoroughly.

As I mentioned, both USB ports were working with the mouse and had worked with the Treo 90, but as suggested, I opened the Device Manager and noted what happened when I tried to Hotsync:

A "?" came up as an unknown device (not USB...). I clicked on properties and it said the device was not working properly, so I had the system search for a suitable driver installed it and, VOILA!

... it WORKED!

I can now Hotsync.

I have not been able to get a BT or IrDA connection between the TG50 and my NZ90, but I'll work on those later...

Thanks again!
