I'm thinking of putting together a demo coding contest for a coupel fo handhelds (Palm OS and maybe for GP32 just for fun).
I've whipped together a page for it:
http://www.codejedi.com/shadowplan/contest.html
It is not yet complete, and the prizes and details are not yet nailed down.
Whats the ballpark necessary for prizxes? We're by no means rich, but I dont' mind layout out a few hundred bucks for a fun little contest.
How does this look to you guys? (developers or hax0rs)
What do you think?
Good idea?
Is the web page good enough?

dont you think you'll get a lot of these demo submissions re-entered? we are planning the 2003 edition of our contest; but, it wont be aimed at demo production. more details to be made public when it is available

Crap; I didn't know you guys were doing it yearly :(
I'll check your url.
When are you doing it?
Do you have a theme?
I've just sent out all the announcements abnout mine this morning and thought I'd see what folks thought about it. :/
If your'e overlapping, perhaps we can cooperate so that our themes do not overlap, and thus keep entries from goign to both.
You don't have any details on your page; I'm running tow.. one in November, and one Nov through first half of December. (4 weeks and 6 weeks for two contests).
Perhaps you can run yours in January?

the first demo contest was very successful - some great entries from the submissions we got.. we actually saw the device do much more than we expected. of course, the usual demos came through (fire, plasma etc) - they always appear. some great submissions did come through with uniqueness to the palm and some little hacks you can do with the screen buffer specific to the m505 device :) it was a pretty good success.
our plan was to do a contest yearly, but, most likely not always with the same theme. there are only so many demo's you can create - and, in such a small market; it will be hard to get newer creative demo's available.
we originally wanted to do ARM based coding contest; however, part of the problem we have found is the lack of development tools that makes this easy an easy task for everyone - hence, no contest (only a select few developers will be able to do it).
i personally believe due to this, you will have a hard time getting a lot of entries :( i took a quick look at your contest, and, too many 'vague' areas right now..

we have had some discussions internally; and, we are thinking about moving away from coding this year - and, move towards creativity. many users are creative - so, why not run a contest to utilize that. we also considered having a contest using SHARK - write program under windows; if it is successful - we can make it happen on multiple platforms.
now, who would like to win a tapwave zodiac? :)

What sort of vague areas?
Anything you can see in the rules etc that need changing?
If you'd like to help promote or support this contest, that would be cool.
I'm not going hardcore like 4k mini contests or the like.. that tends to atract the hardcore but scare away the casual hacking, I'd expect. *shrug*
If theres not enough interest, I'll cancel one as needed.. but if theres enough interest and folks are having fun, its worth doing :)
How many submissions did you get? How much advance notice did you give? How long did you give for development?

we had a total of 51 accepted submissions. 13 were not accepted (didn't meet the requirements of the contest). the contest was announced on 5th April 2002 and completed by 30th July 2002. that was like three months for development.
you'll need a lot more time in your contest for the type of applications you are expecting.
