View Full Version : MS Import not working? A fix

Thought I'd post this for future users.
Had trouble with getting MS Export/MS Import to work. Spent an *hour* on the phone with two levels of Sony techs (who were great), but didn't resolve the issue until I did a hard reset of my SJ30 and started reloading software, and discovered the problem through a deeper search on this board!
Symptoms: MS Export would claim "no memory stick"; MS Import would run on the handheld, but essentially freeze the desktop until the handheld MS Import disconnected.
Tried: reloading USB drivers, MS Export software, manual install of SCSI driver, troubleshoot in device manager whiel MS Import ran, etc.
Sony tech eventual suggestions: hard reset, reinstall, avoid LauncherX (their notes have it that it can cause problems with memory sticks).
FINAL solution: I was running FastCPU and had MS Import set at 46mhz. MS Import DOES NOT LIKE THIS! Setting it back to the standard 33mhz resolved the issue, even with LauncherX on board.
Well...at least I now have a CLEAN install! And, I installed UninstallHack before doing anything (recommended), so now I have a running record of what gets installed and can cleanly uninstall all parts (mas y menos! [more or less]).

Another trick I learn when MS Import does not want to connect to PC using Win 98SE, even after MS driver (MS Export) is installed, is to do the following:
1. Put the Clie on the cradle.
2. Launch MSImport.
3. Go to the Device Manager (right click on "My Computer" icon and left click on Properties).
4. Scroll down to USB controller (at the bottom of the list) and click on the "+" sign to the left of the USB controller.
5. Double click on the "Sony PEG Mass Storage" to force Windows to recognize the driver.
Then Windows will usually recognize the new hardware. You may need to follow instruction on the screen to complete the new device driver installation.
Thanks for the suggestion about turning FastCPU off. It works just fine now!

I say this to everyone BUY A USB MEMORY STICK READER!! It's so much better and a lot faster than MS Import! They sell for around $25 at places like OfficeMax or Wal-Mart!

MS Export: When I load it I get an error message saying, No Memory Stick or No Drive. What do I do now?
I bought 6 in 1 media reader mounted on my computer. When I insert MS to it, it want's to format. What do you think? What is going one here? My reader is faulty or I do need to format?
LIttle confued.

sorry to sound so "newbie" but what is Fast CPU and where do I find it?
Thanks!

FastCPU is an over/underclocking program for the Palm OS, avaliable from www.megasoft2000.com - it will increase or decrease the CPU speed, in MHz, depending on your setting. Increase the speed for better performance, decrease it for better battery life. It costs $14.95, I believe.
Sometimes, the culprit is the USB controllers. For example, there are too many unused USB drivers in your PC. Larry Winward (N2IFP) posted the 2 useful USB troubleshooting guides in nXtClieClub, so I thought I post them here too:
hp.com-USB troubleshooting (http://h20015.www2.hp.com/en/document.jhtml?lc=en&docName=bpy01268)
usbman.com-USB driver clean up guides (http://www.usbman.com/Guides/Cleanup%20Device%20Manager%20Safe%20Mode.htm)

I use FastCPU and have it set for 40 MHz. I have been trying to get the MS Import to work for over 4 hours with no luck... this info is a lifesaver... thanks a bunch.
God... I'm so glad I found this thread! Spent almost the whole afternoon trying to figure out why MS Import wouldn't work any more -- same symptoms as described above, freezing the Windows desktop etc.
Just a note for any Afterburner users: I had my Clie's speed set to 49 MHz with Afterburner when the problem occured. Although I was suspicious of Afterburner and even disabled it in YAHM, MS Import would not work.
*Only* when I explicitly set my Clie's speed back to normal would MS Import work. As it turned out, I could also set the global speed to 49 MHz while setting MS Import's speed to 'Norm' to make it work.
Hope this helps anyone.

It does not support UX50, right? I tried but it said "Device not supported"...

try re-installing the MS SCSI driver on your pc.

Can't thank you enough for this info. I just figured I'd installed or uninstalled something that messed it up. I had no idea it was Fastcpu that ruined it.

Truly sad part is, once my MS Import wasn't working, I started doing things the hard way, buy deleting stuff, installing big files the regular way, moving them to the Memory stick by using PiDirect, then reinstalling the stuff I deleted. :(

How do you change it to 33mhz?

I don't use any hacks or speed-up utilities, but when I used MSImport to copy all my data to a backup folder on my PC my Clie SJ33 would lock up.
The solution for me was to be slower with the select/copy/paste motions on my PC. For some reason, if I very quickly select the files on the memory stick, and immediately choose copy, and then paste, it seems to get ahead of what the MSImport directory can keep up with. By taking my time and giving it a few seconds I get no more errors. (Yea!) Hope that helps someone. :)
