View Full Version : Why would Sony do that?

Hi All,

I'm not an expert on PDA's, but have owned several over the last few years. Last year I purchased the T665C and a LEXAR 128MB memory stick.

Now I want to upgrade to OS 5 and is thinking of buying the TJ35. I emailed Sony and they told me that the LEXAR 128 MS would not work on the TJ35?

I know Sony is infamous for pushing their own products, but seriously. Can anybody explain to me why the LEXAR won't work? And if I do get the TJ35, can I only invest in a new Sony 128MB MS or which other MS would work?

Thanks.

I guess Sony wants you to buy THEIR MS, I own a Sony and a Lexar MS and both work exactly the same.

I think their replies are automated and hold hadly any value to specific questions. they may not support it but i think it would work. i use a sandisk memory stick with my TG50. works better than the "real" one.

You know what is funny about all of this... ScanDisk now makes the MS for Sony. They have a joint venture where ScanDisk outsources the MS production directly for Sony, so I do not see any reason why don't work. If you notice the new MS Pro's they look identical from both Sony and ScanDisk... that is because they are. They are just marked differently during different production runs. I work in a Fab manufacturing company where we have most of our outsourced Fabs in Asia, so this is nothing new.

Sony always says other branded MS are incompatable.

Total BS. :)

Well, that suddenly makes the TJ35 a LOT less attractive to me. I can use other brands in my T615 and my Sony Cybershot camera.

If someone actually tries this out, please let us hear from you. Any reviewers out there willing to try this?

Javabird, Sony wants you to pay more for Sony sticks. It's total BS, I'm sure, else there wouldn't be any other MS manufacturers. Besides, in the tech world, not supported and not compatable are two different statements. Not supported means that if it fails, they won't fix the nonsupported device (i.e. any third-party software). Not compatable means it won't work ...

You are saying the exact opposite of what this whole thread is all about. All of the other brands will work on a TJ35 or TJ25 or any other Clie for that matter.

Total crap and BS that other brands of memorysticks won't work on the TJ series.

Memorysticks are generally more compatible with each other if you look at the performance. With SD cards for example, there are enormous fluctuations in VFSMark scores (especially with Sandisk cards). No problems whatsoever using memorysticks with whatever brand you choose.

I guess I don't understand. The first poster emailed Sony and Sony's response was that the Lexar stick would NOT work.

This puzzled me. Why would Sony specifically SAY that the Lexar would not work? (jakevv said "not work," rather than "not supported.") And why would the TJ35 be engineered differently than other Sony Clies and cameras (which WILL accept other brand media)?

Why is Documents to Go not supporting version 5 shortly, even though it is a perfectly acceptable piece of software? To attempt to force the customer to upgrade to version 6 for another $29.99 or to buy their new other thing.

This is both a marketing ploy to get you to buy their proprietary stuff and a way of covering their butts if the a clone or other brand item messes up your data or your Clie. It also forces them to not have to support these other companies when all they have to do is test their products alone. It really lessons your support and need to give the customer any help. If I email Sony and tell them that my ScanDisk MS does not work, then they will say that it does not work on my Clie (perhaps, a stupid Customer Service Rep who doesn't know between "we won't support" and "it does not work with.").

As I said already and if you read the article on www.PalmInfoCenter.com, the ScanDisk MS Pro are the same ones as the Sony MS Pro's. Sony outsourced their production to ScanDisk. So, if the Sony ones work then the ScanDisk ones will work. Now, all that Lexar has to do is meet the spec's for the MS Pro and it will work. There is no trade secret besides being licensed to do so by Sony (they may not need a license if Sony's patent ran out).
