Does the new TJ35 have polyphonic sound? or does it come with the Sony Sound Utility?
More nagging questions!
Thanks in advance!

By the way, I would say no... read my experience below:
I have to tell you that I looked at the TJ25 today and I am VERY DISAPPOINTED!!! What is Sony thinking about with the terrible little speaker. This is horrible and I will not buy a TJ. Does anyone know if the speaker on the TJ35 is better than the TJ25? This will be the TJ's only hope. I cannot use a PDA whose speaker I cannot hear... what good would my alarms be?
Also, that stylus is terrible. I cannot use that little thing. What are they thinking? Again, Sony, I hope the TG replace that is suppose to compete with the TT3 will be better and hear soon!

He is asking for the TJ35, and what u talked about is TJ25, man.
TJ35 got very good speakers, may even better than TG50's.

I just received an email from Sony telling me the speaker is exactly the same as the TJ25. See below for their answer:
"Response (Steve) - 10/19/2003 12:46 AM
Thank you for contacting us with your query regarding the TJ series CLIE handhelds.
The speaker in the PEG-TJ35 is the the same as the PEG-TJ25.
Sony's Product Design and Devlopment team is working at designing new products and upgrading existing new ones based on the feedback that we receive from our customers. Please rest assured that your suggestion will be forwarded to the appropriate department.
Thank you for visiting SonyStyle.com. Please feel free to contact us for further information."
Unless, they are wrong (and I realize that there is a good chance for that), I think the TJ35 may be out of the question. Of course, Sony hinted that they may improve its design. I certainly hope so.

He means it has a Piezo-electric plate (like old palms) and not a real diaphram electromagnetic speaker.

I visited the Sonystyle Hong Kong website and there is a link to a page that compares the TJ25 vs TJ35 and it clearly states that the TJ25 has a "Buzzer" (exact term) and the TJ35 has a mono "Speaker" (exact term also). So the sound on the TJ35 SHOULD be similar to the T665/T615/TG50 family..... it doesn't mention Sound Utility though!?!?
FYI

Was that in Japanese by any chance? If so, do you have the exact link? I have a friend at work who speaks and reads Japanese quite well. Can you forward this link to me? I would love to see this, since the Sony rep whom I spoke to said otherwise. It gives me a kick to respond to Sony with their own info.

I was reading the English website and noticed that only the TJ35 has a built-in speaker while the TJ25 does not. I wonder if that is a reference to a better speaker in the TJ35? I can only hope.

Thanks for the link. It is very helpful and confirms that the speaker on the TJ25 is very different than the TJ35. Now, the TJ35 may be on again for consideration. We will see when it comes out in stores here shortly.

Can you let us know if the alarm sound on the TJ35 is better than the TJ25? If it isn't I am not getting it.

more on the way
I'm downloading Mark/Space's "The Missing Sync" at the moment. Can't wait to transfer everything to the Clie.
The orange LED just shut off, meaning the TJ35 is fully charged. Man, none of the Palms I owned (even the super expensive TT) had an LED indication of when charging was complete. That is a killer feature for me. The TE has no power LED at all.
I'm about to do side by side pics of the screens. I fully expect the TE to be brighter, but not enough to make me regret purchasing the TJ35. No matter the results, I'm keeping the Clie. It's exactly what I've been waiting for.
Thanks for your nice reply, by the way. I have found the ClieSource forums to be much more polite than the Palm forums I'm used to.
First impression is that, yes, the screen is a bit dimmer, but not in a way that makes it less usable. On the TE, as with the Z71, the white LEDs are visible when the PDA is held at a sharp angle. I can not see the LEDs at all on the TJ35, but maybe I'm just not looking in the right place.
Just tested the alarm, and it is MUCH louder than that of the TE at the same setting. That's a plus for me, as there are some days when my PDA is in my front pants pocket rather than my shirt pocket. The louder alarm compensates for thicker pants fabric and a greater distance from my ear. Important pluses in a fifth grade classroom.

I have also listened to the TJ35 and it is polyphonic and very loud. It definitely goes along with the sound quality of my current T665. I just thought that I would weigh in my thoughts.
TJ35 might have a better speaker than TJ25, I have not compared that.
However, I have a TG50 before purchasing my TJ35, and now I would NOT exactly call the speaker on TJ35 polyphonic.
To compare, I beamed the Sony Sound Utility to my TJ35, as well as the numerous sounds I that I have.
It's certainly doesnt sound polyphonic! However, I am happy as I never actually make these sounds to use. All I needed was the alarm/ reminder tones which I must say louder than the TG50!

So does the TJ35 not have the sound utility to play different alarms like my T665?

What alarms exactly are present? I do not see any on mine. Can you tell me if there is an alarm sound other than the basic alarm sound?

What is your general opinion of the T35 now you have one. I haven't got it yet as I have the insurance from Best Buy on my T615 (alarm gone altogether) so need to wait for them to get it. Wonder what you really think or should I wait for the next PDA.

The difference between a TJ25 and TJ35 is probably the same difference as there was between an SJ22 and an SJ33. Similar places in the product lineup, same differences between model numbers...
Is "same difference" one of those oxymorons, like "jumbo shrimp"? Sorry, it's Monday...

So the final verdict is that the speaker on the TJ35 is better then the TJ25?
If so, I think that my TJ25 may be on it's way back to Fry's to exchange it for a TJ35!

Yes, the speaker on the TJ35 is definitely better than the TJ25 and I would also say that the screen is brighter too. Was in CompUSA today and compared both side by side so it has helped me to make up my mind to get the TJ35.

Ok, I exchanged the TJ25 for the TJ35 on Monday and there is a HUGE diference in the sound. The 25 would not play sound in Kinoma and the 35 has a nice and loud spekaer that works great.

I don't recall from when I bought TJ35 before (also never really played around with it before returning it) and don't know now because I don't have my new one yet, but does the TJ35 have the Sound Utility? If not, is this what allows it to play different sounds in the Datebook or in DateBK5 (if anyone is a user and knows)? Will installing this allow me to make the different alarm sounds work?
Thanks in advance!

The TJ35 does not come with a Sound Utility and does not have a polyphonic MIDI chip. So it looks like old Sony apps can't play polyphonic MIDI sounds. The MIDI and ADPCM sounds, however, are played from the same databases. Newer OS 5 utilities and games can play polyphonic sounds using the newer built-in sound manager.
Riversen,
SoundUtility is not all it's dished up to be. I have used a program called Alarm Master - you can make your own collections of alarms. My collection is over 1 MB - I have about 57 different alarms. Since the problem is that the TJ-35 doesn't have a midi chip shouldn't a wav alarm app like this work:

Dang I hate waiting for things to come.

I have been using WavAlarms on my TJ35. Works great. Speaking of alarms, if you haven't tried Bob's Alarm yet, you should. It is the best alarm/stopwatch/timer program out there and being updated/enhanced on a daily basis. The latest version will play all of the internal alarms (or special collections like Alsa mentioned above) as well as triggering WavAlarm 1.4 like reversen mentioned. So Cool! You can get the latest at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RarM_Software/files/Bobs_Alarm/Beta_versions

I have version 1.4 build #2003.025. I click "set alarms", choose "Bob's Alarm", "Add/Edit", and then select a WAV file. Make sure you play the wav file in this screen. Compressed wav files will not play. If it plays from this screen, it will play whenever the selected application (Bob's Alarm) executes an alarm.
I've actually put the developer of Bob's Alarm (did I mention that it's the best program out there) and the developer of WavAlarms together in hopes that they can colaborate. Bob's Alarm allows different alarm sounds for each programmed alarm event, I'm hoping that eventually the different alarm events can trigger different WAV files.

I haven't seen this discussed yet, but maybe I've just missed it...
Does the TJ35 allow for the enhanced sounds in many games through its speaker? If it doesn't utilize the same polyphonic sound chip as other Clies, does that mean that a game like Bejewelled is back to clicks and beeps? Also, what about Kinoma player? I know the best sound would be through the headphones, but can it play movie files with sound through the speaker?

If the game supports the OS 5 sampled sound manager, you will get even better sound (e.g. mp3's with bass boost, etc.) than from models using the older sound chip. WAV files seem to work about the same. But if a game expects a built-in polyphonic MIDI synthesizer, then you (currently) will not get the same quality of sound from the TJ35.
However, rumors are that several developers are working on software polyphonic MIDI synthesizers for devices which use the OS 5 sound manager. Some games claim to already include one.

you need a folder named "audio" in the root directory of the memory stick, its the same level as the PALM folder
