View Full Version : Question Mark on the MemoryStick

Since Yesterday...I have not been able to get may memorystick to work. Everytime I insert the memorystick I get the hour glass like its reading the memorystick then I get a orange question mark on the memorystick. I did a hard reset...still doesn't work..Can anyone help.

memorystick 2/64mb and 1/128mg non Pro.

if it won't work after the hard reset & before you restore your backup, it sounds like a hardware problem.....

If you have a card reader, try using your pc to format it or why not try your pal's clie or sony digital camera whether the ms works.

I've tried all the the things that were suggested and it still can't read the memory stick...I believe its a hardware problem.. I jave another question....is there a way to get the Clie serial number from inside the unit? The sticker on the back faded and I can't read the number.

you can use a freeware utility called Filez. You can get it from palmgear. In it, click on 'Information' then on the 'Hotsync' tab, and the serial number should be there.

Edit: oh wait, i think that's a different serial number. Hmm I'm not sure now.

The serial number in Filez is not the unit serial number (not the same) I dont know if you can get that number anywhere but the sticker

On the box, there's another sticker with serial number.

Why when format my MS the memory size cannot reach until 128MB of my full capacity?

Its normal, dont worry. Its something like our pc/notebook harddisk. If I explain it thoroughly, it's gonna take a while as I'm a bit lazy now. My 256ms has only 237mb usable. Just dont worry.

Do other memory sticks work in the clie?
Does this memory stick work in other clies? (Take a stroll down the the sony store)

Shine a torch into the memory stick slot and make sure there isn't any fluff sitting in there, it can prevent a pin or two from connecting.
Examine thwe memory stick itself and check the contacts are clean and undamaged.

I've tried other memorystick and I still get the same thing. My memorystick does work in other Clie's.

Ooh, that doesn't sound good. Have you done a visual examination of the memory stick slot? (Emphasis on 'visual' - you wouldn't want to void a warrantee right now :) ) It's not easy to see in there but if you can hold the door aside with a pin or something, you should be able to see the mechanism at the bottom. Check there isn't any crud down there.

Otherwise, I guess it's replacement time...

I had a go at getting my serial number out of my clie to no avail, I used to be able to do it via the OS on my IIIc so I think it should be doable on OS5 but can't remember how I did it to see if it works here. I wish you luck, hope it works out for you - a clie with no mem stick wouldn't be so great... :/
